1234 Shoreditch Festival 2011: how to use (part 4)Here we are, fourth and last part of my guide to the 1234 Shoreditch Festival. We’ve listened to 9 bands so far, from very young rock’n'roll explorers, to darker moods and electronic vibes. This is the time for powerful pounding rock.

You can find the previous parts here:

Lydia Lunch

It was nicely surprising to see Lydia Lunch in the line up of this years 1234 Shoreditch Festival. Old lady of the music industry, an eclectic character who always managed to dodge the limelight, maybe inadequate to her wild soul. Singer, poet, actress, rock’n'roll icon, she will jam some dirty, dirty blues punk and rock spat with her husky voice and outrageous lyrics. By age she could be mother to most of the other musicians playing that day but it seems that Lydia signed some contract with the Devil. If you find yourself in the moshpit when she’s on stage…well, brace yourself.

Throwing Up

The Throwing up comes to Shoreditch with a quite explicit name and the title of being “one of the best act at the SXSW this year”, which looks pretty good in a band’s CV.

What they do is simply punk. Dirty, fast, angry. But for some reason I cannot stop listening to them. A part of me is raising an eyebrow to the primitiveness of their song, another is fascinated by the raw energy they communicate. Check it out yourself:

The history of Apple Pie

the history of apple pie

I’ve seen these guys opening the concert for Anna Calvi. I came halfway through the set but they immediately got me with their very tight sound.

The History of Apple Pie were playing some good old grunge, but they were doing it pretty good. When I say grunge don’t think of Nirvana but more of Dinosaur Jr. and other noise pioneers, with their fuzzy guitars and voices that can sound so innocent and profound only when you’re at the college.

This is their single, “You’re so cool”…see you on saturday!
