Three days in Alsace: Strasbourg, Colmar and surroundings …. very Christmassy!

and a pork shank with Pinot Noir.
Walking to reach the restaurant we can not but notice the bright lights and the wonderful decorations that adorn the streets of downtown … we look forward to discover every corner of the city.
Sunday morning we started our Strasbourg’s tour that we like and welcomes us with a perfect wheather!
The political capital of Europe, the 7th largest city in France and the capital of Alsace, Strasbourg has all it takes to captivate those who visit it.
Halfway to be a french city or a German one, rich of history and culture, today is a lively, young and dynamic place.
The best thing is walking around and get lost in the many narrow streets and admire the beautiful Christmas decorations! This year, however, because of the sad facts of Paris, the local government has decided to suspend ahead of time all the Christmas markets. The decorations on the buildings and in the streets, however, are not missed.
Taking advantage of the good weather, we decided to walk along the river (Grand Ile) to reach the beautiful Protestant church of Saint-Pierre-le-Jeune… we loved it.
Continuing, we arrived at the Cathédrale de Notre-Dame, impressive, fascinating, one of the best examples of Gothic in Europe and one of the most famous churches in France. With its 142 m high, built on the remains of what once was a temple dedicated to Hercules, is the undisputed symbol of the city. Entirely made of Vosges sandstone, its construction began in 1015, according to the canons of the Romanesque style, to be completed in 1176, according to the Gothic style.
Inside, there is the astronomical clock, a masterpiece of the Renaissance, dating back to 1572. Every day, at the stroke of 12:30, starts, and sets in motion a mechanism with Christ Blessing, the procession of the Apostles…
Completely opposite to the delightful old town, the district that includes tthe most important European institutions is, however, super modern. Here, there are the European Parliament, the Court of Human Rights, the Council of Europe.
The neighborhood is elegant and quieter than the busy city center, in which we return to finish our tour.
In the cathedral square, you notice the Maison Kammerzell, one of the most famous buildings in Strasbourg, made entirely of wood and decorated with animals, warriors, grotesque figures. Dating back to the fifteenth century, it was built according to the traditional standard of the German Renaissance.
Do not miss one of the most beautiful and romantic areas of Strasburgo: the Petite France.
Everything is as it was in 1500, when the area was the aera where millers, tanners and fishermen lived. The typical houses with sloping roofs, the windows on the water, and bridges offer wonderful postcards.
Getting to the “Ponts Couverts” (“covered bridges”) to enjoy one of the most beautiful neighborhood’view. Behind, also admired the Vauban dam, built by the homonymous engineer as a defense in case of enemy attack.
We also tasted the Kugelhopf, similar to our panettone, it is a local specialty.
Although Alsatian cuisine did not make us mad, we tasted more things as possible. Also try the sauerkraut, cabbage (sauerkraut) grated and into brine accompanied with meats or fish, crusted ham, very very good.
The next morning, we rent a car, direction Colmar.
First, however, we decided to discover more about the Alsace, stopping to visit Ribouville and Riquewhir, two delicious villages, typically local.
Even here, of course, the Christmas atmosphere is not missed!
The first stop was Ribeauvillé, also chosen because it is located along the Route des vins d’Alsace, the wine road of Alsace, caratterizzata by countless vineyards. Institutionalized in 1953, the Wine Route passes through charming medieval villages, as well as numerous wineries.
In any case, to honor the best traditions and the local culture we reached the Cave de Ribeauvillé, the oldest cooperative of growers in France!
Riesling, Gewurztraminer, Pinot Gris we tasted all!
Ribeauville still retains the charm of a medieval village; its historic center is easily explored on foot. The town is surrounded, in part, by an ancient wall.
Looking up, you will see the Castle of Saint-Ulrich that along with those of Giersberg and Haut Ribeaupierre dominate the area. There is a path through several vineyards to reach them all three.
Riquewihr, a 15 km da Comar, è altrettanto deliziosa. Anch’essa facilmente percorribile a piedi, è davvero caratteristica.
Riquewihr, 15km from Colmar, is just as delicious. Also easily explored on foot, it is very characteristic. The center consists of a single road along which there are houses delicious, half-timbered, all colored.
Even here, between wine and local specialties, we did not forget to taste anything!
Arrivati a Colmar, l’atmosfera natalizia si declina in tutte le sue possibili sfaccettature.
Arrived in Colmar, the Christmas atmosphere is declined in all its possible facets.
Everything is decorated , in an elegant way and not tacky. The markets are everywhere and people flock to every corner.
We stayed here one night, and well worth the effort.
Also here, you can visit the center on foot. Between a mulled wine and some sweets, you can visit the city in peace and quiet.
In rue des Marchands, the main course, pay attention to the Maison Pfister made with inlaid wooden panels, and to the Maison des Tetes with its facade entirely sculpeted.

If you like, visit the Musée Unterlinden which conserves the famous altarpiece of Issenheim, a late Gothic masterpiece that tells some scenes from the New Testament. Nice.
Obviously, go to the neighborhood of the Petite Venise, the historical district of Colmar, with typical Alsatian houses, which develops on the river Lauch. Needless to say how beautiful … soprattutto the evening, illuminated by thousands of lights.
Bye….
