Se qualcuno di voi ha vissuto la propria infanzia senza il reale elefantino, fondatore di Celestopoli –dal nome della amata regina Celeste–, amico de La Vecchia Signora che lo ha “civilizzato”, della scimmietta Zephiro e del vecchio Cornelius, sappiate che la vostra infanzia ha una grossa e triste lacuna.

Due righe sulla sua storia: L'Histoire de Babar è il libro in cui per la prima volta appare il personaggio di Babar. Si tratta di una fiaba scritta da Jean de Brunhoff basata su una storia che sua moglie Cecile, aveva inventato per i loro figli. La vicenda tratta del giovane elefante Babar che lascia la giungla, visita una grande città, incontra una Vecchia Signora che lo aiuta ad inserirsi nel contesto urbano. Dopo aver imparato a camminare su due zampe, a vestirsi e a comportarsi, ritorna nella giungla per fondare una città, Celestopoli appunto, e portare agli altri elefanti la civilizzazione. La moglie di Babar, Celeste, ha una vita piena di avventure da raccontare. I due regnanti hanno quattro figli: Flora, Pom, Alexander e Isabelle.
Jean de Brunhoff pubblicò altre sei storie prima di morire nel 1937. Suo figlio, Laurent, scrittore e illustratore di genio, portò avanti la serie a partire dal 1946 con Babar et le coquin d'Arthur e altre storie.

Two lines about its history: L'Histoire de Babar is the book in which appears the character of Babar for the first time. It is a fable written by Jean de Brunhoff based on a story that his wife, Cecile, had invented for their children. The story about the young elephant Babar who leaves the jungle, visits a big city, meets an Old Lady who helps him to fit into the urban context. After learning to walk on two legs, to dress and behave, he got back in the jungle and found a city, Celesteville precisely, and he'll bring civilization to the other elephants. The wife of Babar, Celeste, has a life full of adventures to tell. The two monarchs have four children: Flora, Pom, Alexander and Isabelle.
Jean de Brunhoff published six more stories before he died in 1937. His son, Laurent, a brilliant writer and illustrator too, continued the series since 1946 with Babar et le coquin of Arthur and other stories.

Ultimamente (se finora avete vissuto senza, è ora di rimediare) sul canale italiano FRISBEE (44 del digitale terrestre) viene trasmessa una nuova serie in computer grafica dedicata a Badou (qui il sito ufficiale), il nipotino di Babar, figlio di Pom, e dei suoi amici (la volpe pasticciona adottata da Cornelius, la figlia geniale di Zephiro e tanti altri). Anche per i veterani che hanno appena storto il naso, sarà una piacevolissima rivelazione!

Ma ora veniamo alla nostra mostra.
Io non conoscevo il museo de Les Arts Decoratifs e l’ho scoperto solo venendo a conoscenza di questa mostra. Si trova attaccato al Museè du Louvre, con accesso o da Rue de Rivoli o dai Jardins du Luxembourg. Quindi una location più che comoda per i turisti e chi visita Parigi.

But now we come to our exhibition.
I did not know the museum Les Arts Decoratifs and I found it out just because of this event. It is next to the Musee du Louvre, with access or from Rue de Rivoli or from the Jardins du Luxembourg. So more than a convenient location for tourists and visitors in Paris.

L’ingresso è gratuito per i minori di 26 anni, permettendo anche di uscire e rientrare nel corso della giornata e di visitare tutte le mostre (oltre a quella di Babar ce c’era una su Marc Jacobs e Louis Vuitton). Lo staff è particolarmente cordiale e disponibile. Il guardaroba è gratuito.

Admission is free for people under 26 years, allowing even to come and go during the day and visit all the exhibits (in addition to that of Babar there was one about Marc Jacobs and Louis Vuitton). The staff is very friendly and helpful. The cloakroom is free.

La mostra si struttura come una esposizione di numerose tavole e bozzetti, dipinti, decoupage e quant’altro direttamente realizzati da Brunhoff o comunque riferiti al suo celeberrimo personaggio. All’ingresso c’è un video che ne ritrae una bella intervista (di Laurent), in cui si inquadra la particolarità del personaggio e del suo genio. La potete trovare anche QUI, ma vi consiglio di guardarla solo se non avete intenzione di visitare la mostra – altrimenti è un po’ uno ‘spoileraggio’.

The exhibition is structured as an exhibition of numerous boards and sketches, paintings, decoupage or directly made ​​by Brunhoff or otherwise related to his famous character. At the entrance there is a video that depicts a great interview (to Laurent), which is a focus on his character and the peculiarity of his genius. This can also be found HERE, but I recommend watching only if you're not planning to visit the exhibition - otherwise it's a little bit a spoilering.

Da qui, poi, ecco vetrine di giocattoli e gadget dagli anni ’30 fino ad oggi, perfettamente conservati e ancora bramati da grandi e piccini che si affacciano a guardarli.
From here, then, here are showcases of toys and gadgets from the 30s to today, perfectly conserved and still coveted by children and adults leaning out to watch.



E’ stato poi ricostruito l’abito di Babar (il completo verde immancabile) e gli abiti da sposi di Babar e Celeste. Ci sono poi accessori riferiti a Zephir e al piccolo cuginetto Arthur vestito da marinaretto. A dimensioni ‘naturali’ - per un elefante, ovviamente!
It was then achieved the dress of Babar (the inevitable green dress) and marriage clothes of Babar and Celeste. There are also accessories related to Zephir and to the little cousin Arthur sailor dressed. All in 'natural' size - for elephants, of course!

Poi la parte legata all’animazione: come si crea(va) un cartone animato a partire dai singoli disegni, zootropi (vi ricordate quello fantastico che c’era alla mostra della Pixar di Milano?) ecc ecc. Qui entra in gioco anche la nuova serie di cui sopra, Babar e le avventure di Badou con una decina di computer che permettono di giocare e scoprire il nuovo mondo di Babar con la grafica in 3D.
Then, the part dedicated to animation: how to create a cartoon from the individual drawings, zoetropes (remember that there was at the great exhibition of Pixar in Milan?) Etc etc.. Here comes the new series of the above, Babar and the adventures of Badou with a dozen computers that allow you to play and discover the new world of Babar with 3D graphics.

Insomma per chi conosce le storie dell’elefantino è una pacchia. La mostra è piccola, ma carina e tenera. L’ingresso gratuito la rende imperdibile per i giovani appassionati!
So for those who know the stories of this elephant, this exhibition is a godsend. It's small but nice and tender. Free admission make it a must for young fans!

Le mie aspettative erano molto alte soprattutto circa i gadget dei bookshop. Queste sono infatti le tipiche situazioni alla Disneyland in cui regredisco di una dozzina di anni in men che non si dica e sogno come una bambina all’idea di poter giocare con i personaggi che hanno fatto parte della mio mondo di fantasia.
E purtroppo, lo dico subito, i gadget sono invece limitati e niente di speciale. Ho comprato due bellissimi quaderni (sì, sempre per la mia ossessione per quaderni, taccuini ecc…), ma c’era poco altro (carini i segnalibri, l’orologio da muro e i sottobicchieri – che ho visto solo sul sito, evidentemente sono finiti!)(trovate tutto QUI).
My expectations were very high especially about gadgets in the bookshop. These are indeed the typical situation in Disneyland-style in which I regress to a dozen years in no time at all and I begin to dream as a child to play with the characters that have been part of my world of fantasies.
And unfortunately, I tell you now, gadgets are limited and nothing special. I bought two beautiful notebooks (yes, again for my obsession with books, notebooks, pads etc ...), but there was little else (pretty bookmarks, the wall clock and coasters - I've only seen on the site, they must have been finished !) Per chi avesse davvero una dozzina di anni in meno di me (ma facciamo pure una qiundicina) era davvero fantastico (o, per usare il linguaggio tecnico di Celestopoli, zannastico!): il “cavallo” a dondolo a forma di Babar in legno dipinto. Un vero sogno per un bambino!
Altri invece erano deludenti. Si è scelta un’immagine con Babar che fa yoga, simpatica, ma poco rappresentativa. La spilletta era di cattiva qualità di stampa (troppo pixellata) e la tazza, un po’ anonima (quella sul sito è bellissima, ma là tutto riprendeva solo il tema yoga...).

Others, however, were disappointing. They have chosen an image with Babar doing yoga, nice, but unrepresentative. The badge was of poor print quality (too pixelated) and cup, a little anonymous (the one on the site is beautiful, but there was all in yoga theme ... ).

Da acquistare sarebbe stato il catalogo della mostra: realizzato con grande cura, creando un tomo ricco e meritevole. Ma il suo costo, 35 €, mi ha fatto desistere dal prenderlo. Però si trattava di un bell’oggetto (mi è capitato di trovare cataloghi di mostre che invece non valevano affatto)(lo potete acquistare QUI).
