Beautiful Tuscany

Lo scorso weekend dell'Immacolata ho deciso di scappare dalla pazza folla pre-natalizia di Milano con al seguito mamma e figlie (quest'anno ciao ciao agli O'bei O'bei!) per ritemprare fisico e spirito fra le colline toscane. Non siamo andate proprio nel cosidetto "Chiantishire" ma nella zona che lo costeggia: la Toscana è comunque tutta bella e da scoprire!Per fortuna in questo periodo i turisti sono pochi, i prezzi adeguati, ed il tempo è stato incredibilmente clemente: la scelta si è rivelata indovinata.
3 generazioni  che visitano 3 città per 3 giorni... una combinazione magica!

Prima di tutto la location principale: San Gimignano.Abbiamo alloggiato in uno splendido agriturismo subito fuori le mura, con il vantaggio di avere una vista a 360 gradi sul paese e le belle colline circostanti ed il confort di tornare la sera in una "casa" e non in una semplice camera d'albergo.
Last weekend I decided to escape - with mom and daughters - from the pre-Christmas mad crowd  in Milan (no "O'bei O'bei" - a milanese Christmas market - this year!) in order to restore physic and spirit among the Tuscan hills. We did not go exactly in the  "Chiantishire" but in the area that runs along: Tuscany is all beautiful and still to be discovered!
Fortunately in this period the tourists are few, the  prices appropriate, and the weather was incredibly forgiving: the choice proved to be wright.

3 generations visiting 3 cities for 3 days ... a magical combination!

First of all the main location: San Gimignano.
We stayed in a beautiful farmhouse just outside the city walls, with the advantage of having a 360 degrees view of the town and the beautiful surrounding hills, and the comfort to come back in the evening at "home" and not in a simple hotel room.

Il weekend ha coinciso - inconsapevolmente - con la manifestazione "Lumière, la città del futuro", due giorni di particolare illuminazione notturna delle piazze e dei monumenti di San Gimignano. Le installazioni luminose si sono contese il primato scenografico con la luna piena che occhieggiava fra le nuvole.
The weekend coincided - unwittingly - with the event "Lumière, the city of the future", a two-days special night lighting of the streets and monuments of San Gimignano. The light installations competed for primacy with a spectacular full moon peeping through the clouds

Dopo la passeggiata/spettacolo, cena presso la trattoria Chiribiri, dove sono fantastiche le tagliatelle al ragù di cinghiale - ed in generale tutte le paste fresche - e all'ottima cucina fa riscontro un prezzo decisamente accattivante: 106 € in 4 con primo, secondo, dolce e vino compresi.
Il mattino dopo partenza alla via di Volterra con un tempo così così, ma almeno niente pioggia.
After the walk/show, dinner at the restaurant Chiribiri, where we ate  fantastic noodles with wild boar sauce - all the fresh pasta is fantastic here - and the excellent cuisine matched by a very attractive price: € 106 for 4 with first, second , dessert and wine included.

The next morning we travelled towards Volterra: bad weather, but at least no rain.

Abbiamo cercato inutilmente (soprattutto le mie figlie)  la piazza dove è stata ambientata la famosa scena del libro New moon (della saga Twilight) ...
We tried in vain to find (especially my daughters) the square setting of the famous scene of the book New moon (from the Twilight saga) ...

per poi scoprire (i tablet e Google  in viaggio aiutano parecchio) che in realtà la scena era stata girata a Montepulciano... l'unica traccia del film con i Volturi è stato questo tombino (in una scena i vampiri 'sprofondano' da qui nel sottosuolo)
but we founded (tablets and Google help a lot on the go ) that  the scene was filmed in Montepulciano...the only trace of the movie with the Volturi was this manhole (in one scene the vampires 'sink' underground from here )

Pazienza: la città è fantastica, neanche l'ombra di una qualche modernità che qua stonerebbe decisamente. Il palazzo dei Priori con la sua torre campanaria (salire in cima è una faticaccia, ma ne vale la pena), i resti del teatro Romano, gli scavi etruschi... tutto è splendido e ben tenuto.
Visitiamo anche Palazzo Viti (Giuseppe Viti fu uno dei 'viaggiatori dell'alabastro' e si costruì una fortuna col commercio) dove venne ambientato il film "Vaghe stelle dell'Orsa" di Luchino Visconti.
Never mind: the city is fantastic, not even the shadow of some modernity that here would be quite out of place. The Palazzo dei Priori with its bell tower (climb to the top is a grind, but it's worth it), the ruins of the Roman theater, the Etruscan excavations ... everything is beautiful and well maintained.

We also visit Palazzo Viti (Giuseppe Viti was one of 'alabaster travelers' and built a fortune from the sale), set of  "Vague stars of Ursa" , a movie by Luchino Visconti.

Il biglietto per la visita comprendeva una degustazione del vino locale presso le cantine del Palazzo, e nel pomeriggio ci aggiriamo  quindi per le vie di Volterra un po' brille e di ottimo umore.
In questo stato di vago stordimento alcolico abbiamo  acquistato  degli oggetti di alabastro (la produzione  tipica di Volterra) e prodotti alimentari del Chianti (pecorini, cantucci, vin santo e sughi al cinghiale)...
The ticket for the visit included a tasting of local wine at the cellar of the palace, and in the afternoon we wandered the streets of Volterra a little tipsy and in high spirits.

In this state of  alcoholic stunning  we bought objects in alabaster (a typical production of Volterra) and food from Chianti (pecorino cheese, cantucci biscuits, vin santo and wild boar sauces )...

... e, sempre all'insegna del buon cibo, prima di tornare a 'casa' abbiamo cenato in un ottimo ristorante, l'Osteria dei Poeti, dove nelle nostre scelte ha primeggiato la zuppa Volterrana, una sorta di ribollita locale dove il pane toscano viene aggiunto per ultimo rimanendo così croccante.
and, - always dedicated to good food - before returning 'home' we had dinner at a great restaurant, Osteria dei Poeti, where we tasted the Volterrana soup, a kind of  Tuscan 'ribollita'  where bread is added in the end, remaining crispy.

Terzo e ultimo giorno: Siena.Lasciato l'agriturismo con un certo rimpianto, siamo però rinfrancate dal tempo splendido che ci accompagnerà in questa ultima gita.
Lungo la superstrada che da Poggibonsi porta a Siena, ci fermiamo per una 'sosta cappuccino' a Monteriggioni, un fortino medioevale abitato da ben 48 anime, da non perdere!
Third and final day: Siena.
We left the farm holidays with some regret, but we are happy with the gorgeous weather that will accompany us on this last trip.
Along the freeway Poggibonsi/Siena, we stopped for a  'cappuccino time' in Monteriggioni, a medieval fort inhabited by about 48 souls, not to be missed!

Una chiesa, 3 bar, un ristorante, 4 negozi ed un mercatino di Natale improvvisato nell'unica piazza: un oasi di serenità.

Decidiamo di tralasciare la superstrada e ci avventuriamo negli ultimi 20 chilometri che costeggiano la via Fancigena verso Siena.
We decided to skip the freeway and we ventured in the last 20 km lining the 'Fancigena street' toward Siena.

Dopo aver parcheggiato alla Fortezza Medicea, entriamo a piedi nella zona ZTL da nord seguendo via dei Montanini (dove c'è la più alta concentrazione di bei negozi), costeggiando Palazzo Salimbeni (sede centrale del Monte dei Paschi di Siena), per arrivare infine alla nostra meta principale, Piazza del Campo.
After parking at the Medici Fortress, we walked in the pedestrian area from the north  following Montanini street (where there is the highest concentration of fine shops), along Palazzo Salimbeni (headquarters of Monte dei Paschi di Siena, the first bank founded in Italy),  finally arriving to our main goal, Piazza del Campo.


Qui ho lasciato alle figlie - sicuramente più in forma di me - il privilegio di scalare la torre del Mangia (400 claustrofobici gradini!) e mi sono persa questa vista mozzafiato:
Here I left my daughters - definitely in better shape than me - the privilege to climb the Torre del Mangia (400 claustrophobic steps!) And I missed this breathtaking view:

E mentre le figlie faticavano, mamma ed io ci 'riposavamo' visitando il museo del Palazzo Comunale ed i suoi molteplici affreschi: dalla sala del Risorgimento (sede effettiva ed operativa dell'attuale consiglio comunale) a quella famosissima dell'allegoria del Buono e del Cattivo Governo del Lorenzetti.
And while my daughters struggled, my Mom and I 'rested' by visiting the Museum of the City Hall and its many paintings: from the hall of the Risorgimento (the actual operative location  of the city council) to the famous Allegory of Good and bad Government by Lorenzetti.


Pranziamo vicino al Duomo al ristorante 4 Cantoni, un locale minimalista con un'ottima cucina e la prerogativa di essere equamente diviso fra due contrade: abbiamo mangiato in contrada Pantera e pagato il conto in contrada Aquila...e qui ci tengono a fartelo sapere!
Lunch at the restaurant 4 Cantoni - near the Duomo - , a minimalist tavern with great food and the prerogative to be equally divided between two districts: we ate in district 'Pantera' and paid the bill in the district 'Aquila' ... and here they are fond of let us know !

Visitiamo poi il Duomo con i suoi pavimenti eccezionali, la libreria Piccolomini, la Cripta ed il Battistero.
Then we visited the Cathedral with its exceptional floors , the Piccolomini's Library, the Crypt and Baptistery.



Il viaggio è giunto al termine: recuperiamo l'auto e facciamo tutta una tirata per Milano, 4 ore di medio traffico e solo qualche banco di nebbia verso Modena... viaggiare contro corrente aiuta!
Magica Toscana, un'esperienza davvero da ripetere!
The trip has reached the end: we take the car and do a whole tirade for Milan, 4 hours of average traffic and only some fog bank towards Modena ... travelling against the flow helps!

Magic Tuscany, an experience really to be repeated!
