titolo alternativo: "good things come to those who wait", cioè "le cose buone arrivano a chi attende". è andato così con il libro "confessions of a refashionista: life on the zig zag". da quando ho scoperto sheri di awesomesauce & asshattery, volevo leggerlo, ma stava preparando la nuova edizione, quindi ho aspettato pazientemente. e ne sono proprio contenta! questo libretto è strapieno di idee fantastiche per ri-inventare il tuo guardaroba, o facendo rinascere i tuoi vestiti dimenticato nel fondo del armadio o utilizzando tessili comprati di seconda-mano. il bello è che sono progetti molto semplici (infatti, per molti mi sono chiesta, "perché non mi era mai venuto in mentre prima?!") e alla portata di chiunque che ha accesso ad una macchina da cucire, ma i risultati sono molto creativi e di grandissimo effetto.
alternate title: "good things come to those who wait." that's how it went with the book "confessions of a refashionista: life on the zig zag." i'd wanted to read it since discovering sheri from awesomesauce & asshattery, but she was getting the new edition ready, so i patiently waited. and i'm quite glad i did! this book is chock-full of super fantastic ideas to reinvent your wardrobe, either by bestowing new life on those clothes forgotten at the back of your closet or by using thrifted textiles. the best part about it is that the projects are actually very simple (i wondered more than once "now, why didn't i think of that before?!") so anyone with access to a sewing machine can do them, but the end results are extemely creative and impressive-looking.
a parte i tantissimi progetti per vestirti dalla testa ai piedi (manca solo un progetto per creare la biancheria intima, anche se ce ne sono due che trasformano le mutandone di lana!), ci sono anche indicazioni utilissime su come tingere o sbiancare i tessuti con successo e un tutorial su come fare in casa un manichino con esattamente la tua forma, un essenziale per chi cuce i vestiti ma non vuole spendere i tanti soldi per un manichino anonimo.
besides the many projects to dress you from head to foot (the only thing missing is a project to make underwear, even though there are two transforming long underwear!), there is also very useful info on how to successfully dye or bleach garments and a tutorial on how to make a dress form with your exact size, a must for anyone who sews clothes but doesn't want to spend bunches of money on an anonymous dress form.
sheri, come si può già leggere nel suo blog, ha uno stile molto particolare e divertente di scrivere, quindi le risate spesso accompagnavano la mia lettura del libro. ma, a parte il divertimento, il suo modo di scrivere è molto personale ed chiaro e riflette il suo carattere comunicativo. le sue spiegazioni sono concreti e dettagliate, rendendolo molto semplice seguirle. ha incluso anche una pagina con spiegazioni della terminologia semplice del cucito e la rilegatura a spirale (non da confondere con le rilegature dei negozi delle fotocopie che si rompono facilmente) è comodissima per poter consultare il libro durante un refashion.
sheri, as you can already read in her blog, has a very unique and hilarious way of writing, so laughter often accompanied my reading of her book. but, all fun aside, her writing style is very personal and clear and reflects her communicative character. her explanations are down-to-earth and detailed, making it very simple to follow them. she also included a page with simple sewing terminology explained and the spiral binding (not to be confused with those crummy copy shop bindings) is super convenient when you need to consult the book during a refashion.

uno dei motivi per il quale mi piace tanto fare il refashioning è che non si può mai ripetere lo stesso progetto in esattamente lo stesso modo perché i materiali sono sempre diversi. per questo ci vuole una grande creatività, anche quando si usa il tutorial di un'altro. questo lo mette in considerazione sheri, e infatti spesso fornisce indicazioni su eventuali alterazioni o cambiamenti. mi piace tantissimo che a chi legge il libro verrano in mente mille altre variazioni, perché scintilla la creatività. dopo di averlo letto ho preso la cravatta e bottone che sheri mi aveva inviato con il libro e una maglietta che mi andava piccola e, prendendo spunto dal tutorial della pagina 46 (neckties for all), ho creato un t(ie)-shirt cardigan:
one of the reasons i love refashioning so much is that a project can never be recreated exactly the same way because the materials are always different. therefore you need lots of creativity, even when you use someone else's tutorial. sheri takes this into consideration and often gives ideas for potential variations or changes. i love how the readers will think of a gazillion other variations, because it sparks your creativity. after reading it, i took the tie and button that sheri sent me with the book and a long-sleeved t-shirt that was too small for me and, jumping off from page 46 (neckties for all), i created a t(ie)-shirt cardigan:
ho fatto più o meno come ha indicato sheri, ma prima ho fatto un taglio un po' decentrato lungo il davanti della maglietta.
i made it more or less as per the instructions, but first i made an off-center cut down the front.
ho cucito la cravatta dall'orlo di un lato verso su...
i sewed the tie on from the hem upwards...
...girando il collo dietro...
...around the back of the neck...
...fino all'altro lato della maglietta. ho rigirato e cucito la punta della cravatta su verso l'interno...
...to the other side of the shirt. i turned up the tip of the tie and sewed it in place on the inside...
...ho rifinito il bordo dell'altro lato. ho aggiunto un po' di ricamo per coprire i segni lasciati dalle cuciture che ho fatto male la prima volta e ho aggiunto il bottone e l'asola.
...i hemmed the other side of the shirt. i added a bit of embroidery to cover up the tiny holes left from the stitching i didn't do properly the first time and i added on the button and buttonhole.
purtroppo le maniche mi andavano corte (cosa che odio!!!) e c'era pure una macchia su una manica.
unfortunately the sleeves were too short for me (horror!!!) and one was also stained.
quindi è diventata una cardigan a maniche corte. ho fatto un doppio risvolto, che ho cucito con il doppio ago (per permettere l'elasticità). poi ho tagliato il resto della cravatta avanzata a metà e ho messo queste cose alle maniche (come si chiamano quelle cose?!)
so it became a short-sleeved cardigan. i made a cuff on the sleeves, which i sewed down with a double needle (to maintain stretchiness). then i cut the left-over tie in half and i made them into those tab things on the sleeves (what in the world are those things called?!)
ora si vede la macchia solo se si sposta "quella cosa".
now you can only see the stain if you push aside "that thing."
l'unico problema? lo voglio indossare ORA, ma è un cardigan estivo e stiamo andando incontro all'inverno! vorrà dire che dovrò fare una replica con un maglione! ma ci sono sempre le maniche tagliate che sono rimaste... e quel tutorial carino per gli scaldagambe a pagina 61... *quelli* sì che li posso indossare ora!
the only problem? i want to wear it NOW, but it's a summer cardigan and we're now getting closer and closer to winter! which means, of course, that i'll have to make another with a sweater! but there are also still the the leftover sleeves i cut off... and that cute tutorial for funky leg-warmers on page 61... i can wear *those* now!
