Dietro le quinte – In the backstage

Ho immaginato a lungo i miei sassi come palcoscenici, ma non credevo di saperli dipingere. È questa la prima novità del mio 2015: sono apparsi i personaggi. Prima ho creato la piccola CappuccettoRosso e il lupo, in più copie, poi ho deciso di cimentarmi in una figura ancora più complicata, una cantante lirica, che racconta la sua storia dal centro della palco.
I imagined since a while my stones turning into stages, but I though I wouldn’t be able to draw them. This is the first big news of 2015 for me: characters. First I painted the little Red Riding Hood and the wolf, in more copies, then I decided to work on a more complicated illustration, an opera singer, telling her story onstage.

Parlando di teatro, di scena e retroscena, colgo l’occasione per mostrare qualche foto scattata durante la creazione dei miei ultimi sassi dipinti. Capita spesso che mi chiedano dei consigli riguardo a questa tecnica, e confesso che faccio fatica a rispondere; non perché non voglia aiutare, ma semplicemente perché dipingere è esattamente come disegnare: non lo so perché mi riesce, so farlo e basta. Tutto quello che posso fare è condividere sono le informazioni sui materiali, e mostrare qualche foto del procedimento, sperando possa rendere più chiaro il procedimento…
Talking about proscenium, stage and backstage, I’m taking the chance to show you some pictures taken while painting rocks. I often get asked about this technique, but it not easy for me to give answers; not because I don’t want to, just because painting is like exactly like drawing: I can do it, spontaneously, and I don’t know why. All I can do is sharing information about the material I use, and show some pictures illustrating the procedure…

Disegno elementi molto piccoli, ma ho sempre scritto e disegnato in piccolo, e anche questa è una capacità del tutto spontanea. Non disegno quasi mai il mio soggetto a matita sulla pietra prima di procedere. Traccio i primi grandi tratti di colore (le tende, il tetto) per delimitare lo spazio e poi disegno in nero, con un pennello sottile, prima gli elementi più grandi e poi i dettagli (come nella calligrafia, è buon sistema per ‘gestire al meglio’ la superficie).
I paint really tiny details, but I always wrote in small characters and draw small things, so this also a skill that belongs somehow to who I am. I almost never draw my subject before painting. I mark the bigger areas (the curtains, the roof) with a strong colour then I sketch with a tiny brush the shapes: first the big ones, than the details – it is the best way, like with calligraphy, to ‘distribute the elements’ in the nicest way.

Stendo il colore, che ormai ho imparato a sfumare, con lo stesso pennello piccolo (dallo 0 in giù) che utilizzo per tracciare le linee, poi torno di nuovo a definire i bordi neri. A volte mi capita di tornare più volte sul colore e poi sul nero, finché non ottengo una linea ben definita. Con il tempo divento sempre più pignola…
Then I fill up the figures blending the colours, with the same thin brush I used before (number 0 or less), then I define again the shapes with black. Sometimes I go on alternating colour and black until I get a clean-cut line. I get more and more fussy with the time…

Vi confesso che spero di tornare presto a teatro. Prima di avere bambini ci andavo spesso, ho visto veramente di tutto. Ma si sa, i cuccioli crescono anche troppo in fretta e avrò tutto il tempo di rifarmi; e poi dopotutto lunedì prossimo torno sui banchi dell’università, ed è già una bella conquista…
I confess, I’d love to go to theatre soon. Before having kids I was going all the time, I saw hundreds of plays. Anyway, we know babies grow way too fast and I will have plenty of time to catch up; and after all next Monday I’ll be back studying at the university, and this is already not bad…
