Edinburgh: Roddy Grant annuncia l’addio al rugby

Alla vigilia della gara di andata della 1872 Cup, Roddy Grant, uno dei giocatori simbolo di Edinburgh, ha deciso di annunciare il suo addio al rugby.

Grant, che vanta 138 presenze con la maglia di Edinburgh, non si è ripreso dall'infortunio al ginocchio patito al termine della scorsa stagione - dopo essersi sottoposto ad intervento chirurgico." È stato un periodo piuttosto delicato, dal punto di vista emotivo, perchè ho dovuto realizzare che non avrei più potuto giocare a causa dell'infortunio ", ha detto Grant al sito ufficiale del club della capitale scozzese.

" Non ho rimpianti, comunque, perchè sono davvero orgoglioso di quello che ho fatto, dei risultati che ho ottenuto e del mio contributo. Diciamo che la parte più difficile, ovvero la decisione di non giocare più, mi è stata imposta dall'infortunio e io ho solo dovuto accettarla e cercare di andare avanti ".

Grant, 28 anni, è arrivato ad Edinburgh nel 2009; ha iniziato la sua carriera con i Border Reivers - club di Celtic League sciolto nel 2007 - e van grande esperienza con la Scotland 7s, con cui ha giocato dalla World Series del 2006 fino ai Commonwealth Games disputatisi a Glasgow nel 2014. Ha vestito tutte le maglie delle rappresentative scozzesi, giocando nella storica vittoria del 2012 della Scotland A - 35-0 sugli England Saxons.

Ironicamente, Grant è entrato nei Centurions dei Gunners nel 2013, nella gara contro i Glasgow Warriors e, come dice lo stesso giocatore, " it's fitting that this announcement is happening at this time of year."
" Abbiamo vinto quella gara, giocatasi tra l'altro al BT Murrayfield rendendo il tutto ancora più speciale ".

Il nome di Roddy Grant è scritto non solo nella bacheca dei Centurions, ma anche in quella dei capitani di Edinburgh Rugby.
" Ho avuto la fortuna di poter essere il capitano di Edinburgh per alcune gare ed è qualcosa che mi ha sempre reso estremamente orgoglioso. Ho moltissimi bei ricordi e i tifosi hanno sempre dimostrato affetto nei miei confronti per tutta la mia carriera. Edinburgh Rugby è una famiglia, c'è un legame particolare con i compagni e tutti sono stati di sostegno ".

Roddy Grant sarà presente domani al BT Murrayfield per incontrare i tifosi prima del calcio d'inizio della sfida - fissato per le 3.05pm.

"It comes with great sadness that I am forced to hang up my boots. Its difficult to know where to start... I guess first is that to explain that I had surgery end of last season and even though I came back and played a few games this season (unbeaten and captained all 5 which I'm immensely proud), my knee just couldn't recover and is now in a point that my day to day is severely affected and am forced to retire. & Ross McIntosh to name a couple.
There have been many tears but the over riding feeling and emotion has been that of pride. I have ZERO regrets from a career of 9 years which not many pro sportsmen can have.
I have things I wish I had done like getting a full international cap, sure... But I wouldn't trade anything for my 2 players player of the seasons, 1 supporter player of the season (cauli lug), 1 Player of the season and Magners league young player of the season nomination for @edinburghrugby I am extremely proud of every 138 games for Edinburgh. 12 Scotland A caps. Scotland 7's circuit, 7's World Cup 09 and commonwealth games 14. Playing for the thistle has always been such an emotional thing for me and it's so special that the last time I did it was at ibrox at the commonwealth games.
