Ad essere sincero non ho mai capito se Lance Armstrong possa essere considerato il più grande ciclista della storia. Sicuramente prima del 1999 ero d’accordo con Jacques Goddet, storico patron del Tour de France, che indicò Fausto Coppi come “il più grande” ed Eddy Merckx come “il più forte”. Poi è arrivato lui a scombussolare le certezze degli appassionati di ciclismo. La carriera di Armstrong si può dividere in tre parti: fino al 1996, dal 1998 al 2005 e dal ritiro in poi, poi spiegherò perchè. Dagli esordi al 1996, anno in cui scoprì di essere malato di cancro ai testicoli, Armstrong è stato un ottimo corridore capace di vincere anche delle corse importanti come 2 tappe al Tour de France, un titolo nazionale statunitense, una Freccia Vallone, una Classica di San Sebastian e il titolo mondiale del 1993, otre a molte corse minori. La sua carriera si è interrotta bruscamente, come detto, nel 1996 a causa del cancro, che Armstrong riuscì a sconfiggere e a tornare alle competizioni nel 1998. Nel 1999 finisce la storia e inizia la leggenda. Infatti l’americano riesce a vincere 7 Tour de France consecutivi, impresa mai riuscita a nessuno prima di lui. Altri grandi della storia si sono fermati al massimo a 5, Anquetil, Merckx, Hinault e Indurain, unico dei quattro ad aver vinto in modo consecutivo. Certo, Armstrong praticamente in questi sette anni ha corso solo il Tour de France, tralasciando completamente il resto della stagione, a differenza ad esempio di Merckx, che nella sua carriera ha vinto oltre 400 corse. Ma questo non toglie nulla al prestigio dell’impresa dell’americano. Tutti considerano il Tour de France la corsa a tappe più prestigiosa al mondo, corsa nel periodo più caldo dell’anno e a cui partecipano i maggiori ciclisti del mondo, anche se secondo me il Giro d’Italia è la più difficile almeno per quel che riguarda i tracciati.
Dopo i sette tour Roi Lance decide di ritirarsi dalle competizioni alle quali torna nel 2009 (conquistando solamente un terzo posto al Tour). Ed è qui che inizia la terza parte di carriera, con l’infamante accusa di essersi dopato sistematicamente dal 1998 in poi. È notizia di questi giorni la conclusione dell’indagine da parte della WADA, l’agenzia antidoping mondiale, in cui si afferma che la sua squadra di quel periodo, la US Postal, abbia sistematicamente dopato i suoi corridori con tecniche e sostanze così all’avanguardia da non essere rilevate dalle analisi del tempo. Armstrong ha dichiarato qualche tempo fa di essere stufo di queste voci e di voler rinunciare per sempre a difendersi da queste accuse. Quindi se l’indagine della WADA sarà riconosciuta come vera, l’americano rischia di perdere, almeno ufficialmente, tutte le vittorie dal 1998 al 2005, compresi i sette Tour, anche se, notizia del 12 ottobre, i padroni del Tour hanno dichiarato di non voler riassegnare le vittorie, quindi le sette edizioni resteranno senza vincitore. Dal 1999 ad oggi sono 9 i Tour de France che hanno visto il vincitore squalificato per doping, 7 Armstrong, 1 Landis e 1 Contador.

To be honest, I never knew if Lance Armstrong can be considered the greatest cyclist in history. Certainly before 1999 I’d agree with Jacques Goddet, historical patron of the Tour de France, which indicated Fausto Coppi as “the greatest” and Eddy Merckx as the “strongest”.
