In realtà lo si usa sopratutto come un oracolo, indicando una domanda e gettando in aria tre monete, meglio ancora se capaci maeggiando una manciata di steli di millefoglie. Ripetendo sei volte l'operazione si ottiene l'esagramma che poi va interpretato.
