Who is Elena Helfrecht?

To be honest I don’t even know for sure. I am still exploring my identity, finding out who I really am. Each time I think I know me, an unexpected side of myself shows up. I think I am many and still only one.

Onestamente ancora non lo so. Sto ancora esplorando la mia identità, scoprendo chi sono veramente. Ogni volta che esploro la mia identità, scopro di me lati inaspettati. Penso di averne molti e non solamente uno.

What is for you the beauty and how do you express it through images?

Beauty for me is all about stories. Imperfection, abnormal, personal and individual characteristics is what makes each one of us beautiful. I think it is the soul, the unseen, which I consider as beautifil.

Cos’è per te la Bellezza e come riesci ad esprimerla attraverso delle immagini?

La bellezza per me è tutto. l’imperfezione, le caratteristiche anomale, personali e individuali è ciò che rende ognuno di noi bello. Penso che sia l’anima, l’invisibile, che considero bello.

When it all started with photography and how did it develop?

I always loved to express myself through drawing. When I got my dad’s old digital camera I discovered photography as an easier and more comfortable way to capture my own reception of reality. I was able to alter captured images und to make things in my head visible.

Quando è iniziato tutto con la fotografia e come si è sviluppata?

Ho sempre amato esprimermi attraverso il disegno. Quando ho trovato la vecchia macchina fotografica digitale di mio padre ho scoperto che la fotografia era un modo più facile e più comodo per catturare la mia ricezione della realtà. Sono stata in grado di modificare le immagini catturate e di fare le cose che pensavo.

What feelings you feel when you’re working?

This is a very difficult question, as it is an incredibly huge spectrum of emotions. It depends on the exact photo I am taking. I think one can see my emotions in the finished photographs.

Che sentimenti provi mentre lavori?

Questa è una domanda molto difficile, in quanto è incredibilmente ampio lo spettro delle emozioni. Dipende dalla foto che sto facendo. Penso che si possono vedere le mie emozioni attraverso le fotografie.

What do you want to communicate with your work?

I work very expressive, so first of all I just pour out what is inside of me. All in all I just want to evoke thoughts and emotions. It is most interesting, what can be seen in my photographs. I value each interpretation, there is no right and wrong.

Cosa vuoi comunicare con il tuo lavoro?

Il mio lavoro è molto espressivo, quindi prima di tutto mi basta versare in ciò che fatto quello che ho dentro di me. Tutto sommato desidero evocare pensieri ed emozioni. M’interessa sapere ciò che può essere visto nelle mie fotografie. Apprezzo ogni interpretazione, non c’è giusto o sbagliato.

What do you think of digital art?

For I edit my own photographs digitally, I think digital technology gives us great options to reach our desired creative results faster and easier. Analogue photography can not be compared, as it has it’s very own atmosphere.

Cosa pensi dell’arte digitale?

Io modifico le mie foto in digitale, penso che la tecnologia digitale ci dia grandi possibilità per raggiungere i risultati desiderati in modo rapido e semplice. La fotografia analogica non può essere paragonata, in quanto ha in sè la propria atmosfera.

In some of your album there is a constant search of imperfection. Tell us about.

Imperfection is what tells the stories. There is no such thing as perfection – it is a human construct, an ideal which does not exist in real life. Bodies for me are like books. Each and every individual mark holds a secret, an experience.

In alcuni tuoi album c’è una costante ricerca dell’imperfezione. Parlacene.

L’imperfezione è ciò che si racconta nelle storie. Non esiste una cosa come la perfezione – si tratta di un costrutto umano, un ideale che non esiste nella vita reale. I corpi per me sono come i libri. Ogni marchio individuale detiene un segreto, un’esperienza.

Art must fear or embrace the money?

Art can embrace money as long as it doesn’t get dependent on it. Money can give you freedom in your creations, but when you start creating art for money’s sake, it stops being real and honest art.

L’arte deve temere o abbracciare il denaro?

L’arte può abbracciare denaro finchè non si diventa dipendenti. Il denaro può dare la libertà nelle nostre creazioni, ma quando si inizia a creare arte per denaro, smette di essere arte vera e onesta.

Married to the sickness

You have artists who have influenced your art? If so what?

I studied Art History and read a lot about other artists. I love museums and galleries and I can’t stop consuming art in every form. For example I adore the works of Joel-Peter Witkin, Francesca Woodman, Gregory Crewdson or Vivian Maier.

Hai artisti che hanno influenzato la tua arte? Se si quali?

Ho studiato Storia dell’Arte e letto molto sugli artisti. Amo i musei e le gallerie d’arte, non riesco a smettere di consumare l’arte in ogni sua forma. Per esempio io adoro le opere di Joel Peter Witkin, Francesca Woodman, Gregory Crewdson e Vivian Maier.

Do you anticipate some events and / or future project?

I anticipate the Unknown. I am curious about my creative future and I have some rough plans, but nothing really specific. I am thinking of creating a book and a Tarot deck.

Vuoi anticiparci qualche evento e/o progetto futuro?

Non posso prevedere ciò che non so. Io sono curiosa del mio futuro creativo e ho alcuni progetti, ma niente di veramente specifico. Sto pensando ad un libro e a un mazzo di tarocchi.
