Les Danseurs by Matthew Brookes.

Presentato al Grand Palais di Parigi dall’autore, il libro Les Danseurs di Matthew Brookes è un saggio fotografico che si concentra sulla figura del ballerino, molto spesso messo in secondo piano dal fascino e dalla bellezza dell’etoile femminile.Il libro raccoglie delle foto in bianco e nero scattate in studio, con un fondale di tessuto nero, in cui la ricerca visiva indaga il senso astratto e scultore della forma. Non ci sono arabesque, nessuna piroette, solo forme e composizioni che ci ricordano il volteggiare degli uccelli, a cui Brookes pare si sia ispirato, e che ci suggeriscono anche i corpi immortalati nelle sculture di Rodin.I ballerini, che secondo il fotografo sono perfomativi per natura, hanno riscontrato non poche difficoltà prima di lasciarsi andare di fronte alla macchina fotografica.

“The first thing I noticed was that when I had them in front of me, they’d go straight into their pose of being a dancer, so it became very stiff and upright,”ha detto Brookes, “I kept just telling them, ‘Forget there’s a camera there. You are a dancer I’m photographing, but I want to photograph you. Not you as a dancer, but just you. I want to capture your essence and your soul, so just relax.”
