Eccoci pronti per riprendere il nostro tour canadese. Siamo ancora a Toronto. Oggi facciamo una passeggiata dal parco alla strada regina: la Queen Street. La strada è lunga e le foto sono molte. Ci aspettano palazzoni ultramoderni e 'antichi' edifici, asfalto e rampicanti, riflessi e lampioni. Siete pronti? Noi siamo già partiti.
We are ready to restart our Canadian tour. We are still in Toronto. Today we take a walk from the park to the sovereign street: Queen Street. The road is long and the photos are many. Here ultra modern apartment blocks and 'old' buildings, asphalt and creepers, reflections and streetlights are waiting for you. Are you ready? We are already gone.

Toronto si articola intorno al parco centrale: Queen's park. Per chi non è molto pratico della città, il Queen's park è un ottimo punto di riferimento - usatelo come il centro della bussola. Infatti il parco è crocevia dalle maggiori strade di Toronto - come la University Avenue che collega il parco con la costa (tra l'altro, seguendola, porta dritti dritti alla famosa CN Tower).

Toronto is structured around the park: Queen's Park. For those who are not very practical in the city, the Queen's park is an excellent reference point - I recommend you to use it as the center of the compass. In fact, the park is at the crossroads of the major streets of Toronto - such as University Avenue that connects the park to the coast (and in addition, it can leads us straight to the famous CN Tower).

Ai lati della University Avenue si alternano e sovrappongono edifici antichi e nuovi. E' forse questa la caratteristica che più colpisce di Toronto: accanto le piccole villette ottocentesche che sorgono intorno a Queen's park (le quali in gran parte, dei vari dipartimenti dell'Università) si ergono i grandi edifici moderni (molti ancora in costruzione) che disegnano lo skyline della metropoli canadese.
On either side of University Avenue, old and new buildings alternate and overlap each other. Perhaps this is the most striking feature of Toronto: next to small nineteenth-century houses that rise around Queen's Park (which for the most part, are the departments of the University) there are big and modern buildings (many still under construction) that design the skyline of the Canadian metropolis.

Eccoci al punto in cui si incrocia la mitica Queen Street: la più lunga di Toronto.
Queen Street attraversa praticamente l'intera città in tutta la sua lunghezza (restando parallela alla costa del lago d'Ontario). E' un posto imperdibile: abbandonati i grandi grattacieli, ecco una via caotica, nella quale si trovano i più strani negozi e locali, vecchi e nuovi, in una strana atmosfera che penso di poter definire molto 'americana'...!Here we are at the point where University Avenue meets the legendary Queen Street: the longest of Toronto.Queen Street runs through almost the entire city in all its length (while it remaining parallel to the coast of Lake Ontario). It's a place that cannot to be missed: when you abandon the huge skyscrapers, you find this chaotic street, where are the strangest shops and restaurants ever, that are old and new, in a strange atmosphere that I think I can define so 'American'...!

Un consiglio per chi è abituato alle distanze "europee": se siete di quei viaggiatori che girano con in mano un taccuino pieno di imperdibili indirizzi - trovati sui vostri blog preferiti - e siete quindi alla ricerca di un numero civico, potreste rimanere ingannati. Potreste camminare e camminare senza raggiungere la vostra meta. E' sempre necessario controllare bene la mappa, perchè l'orientamento non è così scontato. Per risolvere il problema il consiglio è il pratico tram che percorre l'intera Street.A tip for those who are used just to the "European" distances: if you're those travelers that go around holding a notebook full of irreplaceable addresses - found on your favorite blogs - and therefore you're looking for a house number, you may be deceived. You could walk and walk without reaching your goal. It's always need to double check the map, because the orientation is not so obvious. To resolve this problem, the advice is to catch the practical bus that runs the entire Street.

Nelle immagini che scorrono qui, ho cercato di immortalare questo scontro che si è ormai sedimentato e amalgamato all'intero assetto urbano di questa lunga via. L'accostamento tra i mattoncini rossi e le superfici specchianti è una delle caratteristiche e degli aspetti più affascinanti del posto. Voi cosa ne pensate?
In the images that flow here, I tried to capture this conflict that has settled and mixed the entire urban structure of this long road. The combination of the red brick and the mirrored surfaces is one of the most fascinating aspects and features of the place. What do you think?

Ecco qui invece, assorbiti dal verde, ci sono i dipartimenti delle facoltà dell'Università di Toronto. Non male non credete?
Here instead, absorbed by the green, there are the departments of the faculties of the University of Toronto. Not bad is not it?

E' difficile dare un giudizio complessivo della città avendola vissuta per così poco tempo (soltanto cinque giorni, di cui tre occupati completamente da un convegno). Difficile assaporare gli odori e cogliere l'atmosfera. Non è una città che cattura nell'immediato per qualcosa in particolare. Senza dubbio, è tutto molto ordinato. C'è sicuramente un'armonia magnifica tra i nuovi edifici (molti stupendi, tra l'altro) e gli antichi (ed è molto strano vedere considerati "antichi", per noi europei, palazzi che avranno al massimo duecentocinquanta anni).
...Però. Forse c'è un però.

It's difficult to give an overall judgment of the city, having lived it for such a short time (only five days, three of which were fully occupied by a conference). It's been difficult to savor the smells and get a feel. It is not a city that immediately catches for something in particular. Without any doubt, it's all very neat. There is definitely a harmony between the magnificent new buildings (many of which are gorgeous, by the way) and the old ones (and it is very strange to see considered "old", for us Europeans, buildings that haven't more than two hundred and fifty years).
...But. Perhaps there is a but.

... Però l'anima fa fatica ad emergere. Sarà forse una difficoltà "europea" (per me era il primo viaggio nel "nuovo mondo"), ma la storia così recente e vagamente artefatta, lascia un po' spaesati.
... But the soul of the city finds it hard to emerge. Maybe it's just a "European" (for me it was the first travel to the "New World") kind of difficulty, but its history so recent and somewhat artificial, leaves a bit out of place.

E' da considerare, comunque, che una città non è solo la propria architettura, ma è sopratutto chi la vive. Ecco perché ciò che porto con me di Toronto è la cordialità degli abitanti.
Ma ho appena deciso che non ve la racconto oggi. :P
It should be considered, however, that a city is not only its architecture, but especially those who live it. That's why what I carry with me from Toronto is the friendliness of its inhabitants.
But I just decided I'm not going to tell you today. :P
