La commedia dark di Inarritu e il raffinato giallo di Wes Anderson – Birdman e The Grand Budapest Hotel – in cima alla classifica con 9 candidature, guidano la corsa alla conquista della statuetta cinematografica più ambita, seguiti a ruota con 8 nomination dal biopic sul matematico Alan Turing – La teoria del tutto – e da The Imitation Game.
In gara anche l’italiana Milena Canonero (Oscar 2007 per il film Maria Antonietta) che concorre grazie ai costumi realizzati per Grand Budapest Hotel.
