Racconti della London Craft Week 2015

Metti due curiose e amanti dell’artigianato a Londra nella settimana della London Craft Week 2015 ed ecco che cosa succede!!! Ilaria, la mia fantastica compagnia di avventure londinesi, qualche settimana fa, mi dice: “Kate, dal 6 al 10 Maggio c’è la London Craft Week, ci andiamo?” E io: “Ma bhè non so neanche che cosa sia, mi fido di te e il nome mi ispira un monte, certo che ci andiamo!!”

Da lì sono seguiti lunghi studi del programma e organizzazione, per decidere che cosa volevamo vedere e quando. Una volta selezionate le dimostrazioni e gli artigiani da conoscere e incontrare siamo partite, programma e mappa alla mano, alla scoperta di questa bellissima manifestazione!! La London Craft Week è un evento con conferenze, dimostrazioni e corsi su quello che la city ha da offrire in materia di artigianato, dagli orafi ai tipografi, dai calzolai ai sarti, passando attraverso alle arti tessili ovviamente. Sparsi per la città, in negozi, studi e padiglioni dedicati, è possibile incontrare gli artigiani, vederli all’opera e chiacchierare con loro. Un’occasione fantastica per conoscere meglio Londra, i suoi artisti e i suoi artigiani. Io e Ilaria siamo andate in giro, chiacchierato, fotografato ed infine preparato un piccolo reportage da condividere con i nostri lettori, spero che questa idea vi piaccia e vi faccia divertire come ci siamo divertite noi.

Here’s the story of two curious women and craft lovers during the London Craft Week 2015. Some days ago Ilaria asked me: “From 6th to 10th of May it’ll be the London Craft Week, will we go?” And I answered: “I don’t know at the moment what it is, but the name is cool, I love it!! We have to go, absolutely!!”
We studied the programme, we selected which demonstrations we’d like to see and which crafters we’d like to meet. The London Craft Week is an event with conferences, demonstrations, workshops with crafters, from goldsmiths to typographers, from shoemakers to sewers, and obviously textile designers. In the city there are shops, studios, pavilions where it’s possible to meet crafters, makers, artists, see what they do and talk with them about their job. It’s a good occasion to discover London and Londoners! Me and Ilaria went around, taking pictures and having fun. Both of us have written a post on our blog, to share our adventures. Nella chiesa di St James a Piccadilly abbiamo trovato al suo telaio Catarina Riccabona, designer e tessitrice. Mentre tesseva, in sottofondo suonava un duo di pianoforte e violoncello, è stato davvero suggestivo. Gentilissima e sorridente ci ha raccontato del suo lavoro, Catarina produce tessuti per cuscini, coperte e sciarpe. Il suo telaio è computerizzato, questo le permette di creare lo schema del disegno al computer, impostarlo e infine procedere alla tessitura manuale. Preferisce utilizzare fibre di origine naturale, non colorate o colorate con tinture vegetali: canapa, lino, alpaca, lana. Il tessuto a cui stava lavorando era ispirato alla decorazione in legno intagliata da Grinling Gibbons, che decora l’altare della chiesa (sì in legno!! Incredibile!!).
Catarina lavora al suo telaio in uno studio in Cockpit Arts, che sarà aperto al pubblico il prossimo fine settimana, ed è pure nella mia zona… ci farò un salto sicuro!!!
Mi ero ripromessa di non esagerare con le foto, ma è impossibile… sono troppo entusiasta di condividere questa esperienza!!!

At St James Church Piccadilly, we met Catarina Riccabona, textile designer and hand weaver. There was a concert of piano and violoncello, while she was weaving, amazing! She’s kindly and smily and explained us her job, she designes and makes cushions, scarves and throws. The wide loom is computerised, Catarina prepares the weave structures in a software and then she hand weaves her fabric. She uses eco-friendly yarns: linen, hemp, wool and alpaca (all undyed/unbleached and sourced from the UK and Europe). Coloured yarns are plant-dyed, recycled, second-hand (from donations) or the natural colour of the animal fleece. At the church she was weaving a fabric inspired by the woodcarvings of Grinling Gibbons. Her studio is based at Cockpit Arts in Deptford, Southeast London… in my area… I must go!!! 

Nell’elegantissimo negozio di mobili Heal’s in Tottenham Court Road, abbiamo conosciuto Gemma Kay Wagget, all’opera con la stampa serigrafica. Anche lei molto disponibile, ha risposto a tutte le domande che le abbiamo fatto, incuriosite da questa tecnica. Abbiamo avuto anche il piacere di provare a stampare su un taccuino, che abbiamo ricevuto in regalo…figo! Gemma, designer tessile, produce cuscini in edizione limitata per Heal’s, che disegna, stampa e cuce.

La serigrafia è una tecnica di stampa, in cui un tessuto (schermo), steso su un telaio, funge da maschera per il colore. Il disegno da stampare viene trasferito sullo schermo attraverso un processo di impermeabilizzazione, viene spalmato con un’emulsione fotosensibile e poi il disegno “matrice” viene impressionato con una luce sullo schermo. Una volta preparato lo schermo, arriva la parte che abbiamo avuto il piacere di provare anche noi da Heal’s, passare sullo schermo il colore, nel nostro caso acrilico a base acquosa. Il colore passa attraverso lo schermo solo nelle parti permeabili e così tinge il materiale (per noi un taccuino) su cui si vuole stampare, posizionato sotto. Ecco questo è quello che ho imparato sulla serigrafia, interessante vero?!?! Un mix tra chimica, arte e artigianato. Voglio saperne di più!! At very elegant Heal’s, furniture shop, we met Gemma Kay Wagget, doing screen printing. She’s very kind and answered to a lot of our questions about this technique, we’re very curious. She creates hand-sewn, machine embroidered and screen-printed textiles. Gemma has designed a collection of cushions for Heal’s Limited Edition series. We’ve tried to do our own print on a notebook, very exciting and a nice gift!!

From Wikipedia: Screen printing is a printing technique whereby a mesh is used to transfer ink onto a substrate, except in areas made impermeable to the ink by a blocking stencil. A blade or squeegee is moved across the screen to fill the open mesh apertures with ink, and a reverse stroke then causes the screen to touch the substrate momentarily along a line of contact. This causes the ink to wet the substrate and be pulled out of the mesh apertures as the screen springs back after the blade has passed.
Basically, it is the process of using a mesh-based stencil to apply ink onto a substrate, whether it be T-shirts, posters, stickers, vinyl, wood, or other material.

Insomma spero che si sia capito che questa London Craft Week mi è piaciuta tantissimo, è stato fantastico girellare con Ilaria!!
