premetto: non sono mai stata in vita mia una persona "da ruches". MAI!! infatti mia madre e mia sorella sono rimaste entrambi molto sorprese quando ho comunicato a loro che stavo facendo un progetto solo con ruches. ma vedete che succede, guardo i blog degli altri, guardo pinterest, e vedo tanti bei progetti con questi elemeni femminili che non mi erano mai piaciuti. e vedo che si possono usare in un modo diverso da come li conoscevo prima, e cominciano a piacermi. è stato così con la sottogonna arricciata.
premise: i have never been a "ruffle" person in my life. NEVER!! my mother and sister were both pretty surprised when i told them that i was working on a project made entirely of ruffles. but this is what happens: you look at other peoples' blogs, poke through pinterest, and see all sorts of projects with these feminine characteristics that i'd never liked before. and i see that you can use them in a different way than i'd previously known, and i start to like them. and that's what happened with the ruffle petticoat.
l'ho vista per prima da sneezerville (mamma mia, quante belle gonne che fa quella donna!). poi da alisa burke. poi credo da qualche altra parte che non mi ricordo più. dopo ho visto la versione con meno ruches da morning by morning productions. ma è stata la sottogonna di suburbs mama che mi ha convinto di farla anch'io. per prima perché... ma guardate quant'è carina lei vestita così! ma anche perché l'ha costruita esclusivamente da magliette recuperate.
i first saw it on sneezerville (gracious, what lovely skirts that woman makes!). then on alisa burke. then somewhere else that i don't remember anymore. later i saw a version with fewer ruffles on morning by morning productions. but it was the petticoat on suburbs mama that convinced me to make one too. first of all because... just look how cute she is dressed like that! but also because she made it completely out of recuperated t-shirts.
quindi ho seguito più o meno le sue istruzioni. ho preso ben 5 magliette bianche vecchie e consummate in alcuni punti che mia madre e suo marito mi avevano dato tempo fa.
so i more or less followed her instructions. i took five, yes five, white t-shirts that were worn out in some spots that my mother and her husband had passed my way a while back.
una aveva una tasca, che ho tolto. l'ho capovolta, ho aperto un pochino l'orlo inferiore, ci ho infilato dentro l'elastico, l'ho cucito per unire le estremità, e ho richiuso l'orlo. poi ho tagliato la maglietta per fare la forma della gonna. ho lasciato una parte delle ascelle per farla più lunga e per dare un po' più di larghezza in basso. poi, usando la taglierina a rotella, ho cominciato a fare delle strisce alte circa 9 cm dalle altre magliette, utilizzando la parte sotto le ascelle.
one had a pocket, which i took out. i put it upside-down, opened the bottom hem a bit, threaded the elastic through, sewed the ends of the elastic together, and closed up the hem again. then i cut the t-shirt to get the skirt shape. i left part of the armpits to make it longer and make it wider at the bottom. then, using my rotary cutter, i started making 9 cm wide strips from the other t-shirts, using the part under the armpits.
le ho arricciate facendo due linee parallele con il punto più lungo possibile e senza fissare all'inizio e alla fine. (io ho usato un altro colore per poterlo vedere e togliere meglio, anche se mi sa nessuno l'avrebbe mai notato se l'avessi fatto con il bianco e lasciato.) poi si tirano i fili pian piano per arricciare, si spillano sul tessuto di base, e si cuciono (ho usato lo zig-zag).
i then ruffled the strips by sewing two parallel lines of the longest stitching possible without tacking down at the beginning and end. (i used another color to see the thread and take it out better, but i bet nobody would've noticed if i'd done it in white and just left it.) then you pull the threads very carefully to ruffle it, you pin them onto the base skirt, and you sew them on (i used a zig-zag stitch).
la mia idea era di usare una striscia-cerchio tagliata direttamente dalle magliette per ogni livello, approfittando del fatto che le magliette bianche non avevano cuciture laterali. ma mi sono resa conto ben presto che le strisce non erano abbastanza lunghe per arricciare per bene. vedete sopra? già nella terza fila, era quasi piatto il tessuto.
my idea was to use one circle-strip cut directly from the t-shirts for each layer, taking advantage of the fact that the white t-shirts didn't have side seams. but i soon realized that the strips weren't long enough to ruffle well. see above? already by the third row, the fabric was nearly flat.
quindi ho tolto quello che avevo fatto fino a quel punto (l'eroe di questo progetto è stato il mio scucino) e ho fatto stisce più lunghe unendo due cerchi di maglietta. questa foto è quando toglievo i fili dalle strisce raddoppiate, che si vedono molto più arricciate. io l'ho trovato più facile spillare le strisce regolarmente sulla gonna base indossandola, poi "indossando" la striscia e spillando metà alla volta con tutto adosso, aggiustando il tutto per evitare che fosse tutto arricciato da una parte e poco da un'altra. certo, se avessi uno di quei manecchini-modelli, sarebbe stato diverso.
so i took apart everything i'd done til then (the hero of this project was my seam-ripper) and i made longer strips by sewing together two t-shirt circles. this picture is when i was taking the ruffle stitches out from the doubled strips, which you can see are much more ruffly. i found it was easiest to pin the strips onto the base skirt evenly while wearing it, slipping the circle-strips over the skirt and pinning on half at a time, adjusting everything so the ruffles would be evenly distributed. of course, if i had a dress form, it would've been different.
ecco come si vede l'ascella della maglietta usata come base. non si vede l'ascella, ovviamente, con la striscia abbassata, ma è leggermente più piena in quei punti.
this is what the armpit of the shirt used as a base looks like. you can't see the armpit, obviously, when the strip is hanging down, but it is slightly fuller in those points.
non mi sento convinta al 100% con una sola maglietta sopra, ma comincia ad essere più interessante aggiungendo altri elementi che coprono di più la gonna.
i'm not 100% convinced with it wearing it just with a t-shirt, but it starts getting interesting adding more elements to the mix that cover the skirt a bit more.
è anche molto carina come sottogonna. si può lasciar uscire da sotto un'altra gonna (qui il vestiti che mi ha fatto sherri) di più...
it's also pretty fun as a petticoat. you can let it hang out from under another skirt (here the dress that sherri made me) a bit more...
...o di meno. qui sta sotto una gonna asimmetrica e mi piace molto come spunta fuori solo un po' di ricci.

anche da dietro è molto simpatica. si deve solo stare attenta al volume aggiunto usandola come sottogonna. sotto gonne più leggere (ad esempio le mie gonne-maglietta), si intravede l'ingombro della sottogonna.
it's cute from behind, too. you just have to careful of the extra bulk using it as a petticoat. you can see the bulk of the ruffles under lighter skirts (like my t-skirts).
qualcuno a casa da scuola con la febbre si è approffitato della macchina fotografica sul treppiede e si è messo in posa come stava facendo la mamma.
someone home from school with a fever took advantage of the camera on the tripod and posed the way his mamma was.
non poteva mancare la prova del salto! questa gonna è molto divertente e anche ingannevolmente pesante (il peso di cinque magliette, insomma...), quindi fa delle cose carine mentre si gira o si salta. conclusione? mi piace, ma ci ho messo un SACCO di tempo per completare questa gonna, più di quanto avevo immaginato. poi non sono soddisfatta con la lunghezza. toglierei l'ultimo uno o anche due livelli di strisce, ma non ho il cuore di farlo dopo tutto quel lavoro! non impazzisco per il bianco e poi i bianchi delle magliette non erano tutti perfettamente uguali (l'ho notato solo dopo averla montata). ho pensato che potrei rimediare facendola stare un pochino nella candeggina. ho già in mente un'idea per una seconda gonna di questo genere, ma con meno livelli e più colorata. vediamo se la faccio o no!
and next is, of course, the jumping test! this skirt is very fun and also surprisingly heavy (the weight of five t-shirts, and all...), so it acts all fun when you spin or jump. conclusion? i like it, but it took me a TON of time to make this skirt, more than i'd ever imagined. plus i'm not happy with the length. i'd take off the lowest one or two levels, but i don't have the heart to after all the work i put into them! i'm not a huge white fan and then the shades of the different whites don't match up perfectly (i only realized after putting it all together). i thought that i could deal with that with a bit of bleach. i already have another version of this type of skirt in my head, but with fewer layers and more colorful. let's see if i actually do it or not!
