Style bits: today we talk about Quilted

Primo Style Bits dell'anno!
Questo mese io e Laura, complici le sfilate della moda uomo che l'hanno visto vero protagonista, vogliamo parlarvi di un trend passato che sta tornando ad imporsi prepotentemente, quello del tessuto trapuntato.

Welcome to the first Style Bits of 2012!
This month, me and Laura decided to talk about an old trend, that is now back: quilted!
We first saw it on the catwalks during the menswear fashion weeks, and it's now everywhere!



Ricordate tutti quel brutto cappotto trapuntato che vi costringevano a mettere a settembre le vostre mamme prima di andare a scuola, vero? Io ne avevo uno tristissimo di un marrone particolarmente spento, Laura uno bordeaux ma fortunatamente all'epoca non ci interessava troppo quel che ci mettevano addosso. Ora credo lo brucerei in giardino.
Effettivamente condannerei a questa fine infame anche tutti i cappotti del collage qua sopra partendo sicuramente dal pocho di Zara (pocho in tessuto trapuntato? Seriamente?)

Do you remember those awful quilted jackets that our moms forced us to wear in September?
Maybe it even had a corduroy collar?!
We both had one (Ottavia: brown, Laura: burgundy), but luckily, when you are 9 years old, you don't care that much about clothes!
In the image above, we put some awful quilted jackets that, in our opinion, should disappear from Earth! Especially that Zara poncho... we firmly believe that mixing such items (poncho + quilted) is a very difficult challenge. Hey designers, are you serious?



Il problema del trapuntino è che deve essere particolare e portato con una certa disinvoltura per evitare l'effetto cacciatore.
A noi sono piaciute le proposte di Proenza Schouler (pre-fall '12) che, stravolgendo il concetto stesso di trapuntino, lo fanno diventare addirittura un vestito o la biker jacket di Balenciaga grintosa e particolare al punto giusto per non passare inosservata. Interessante anche la proposta di Alexander Wang che usa questo materiale per foderare le sue enormi cappe e quella di Chloé che gioca a far spuntare fuori da un cappotto classico una giacchetta trapuntata a contrasto.

The main problem with quilted jackets and clothes is that you could look like a hunter.
In order to avoid this, be sure to choose a peculiar texture!
We liked what Proenza Schouler did for the pre-fall '12: they twisted the traditional idea of the quilted texture and used it on dresses! And what about that beautiful biker jacket by Balenciaga?
Alexander Wang also played with this trend, lining huge capes with a quilted layer, while Chloè tries to surprise us with a quilted jacket popping out of a traditional coat.



Diverse proposte interessanti anche per quanto riguarda l'uomo. Si va dai completi eleganti di Dolce e Gabbana (estremamente impegnativi) a quelli più sportivi Moncler caratterizzati da maxi quadrettoni sia sulle giacche che sui pantaloni fino ai cappotti presentati nella collezione Dior homme. Il consiglio è quello di evitare il verde militare perché l'effetto anziano pescatore-cacciatore è sempre dietro l'angolo.

Boys, there are lots of interesting things for you too! If you think that the elegant quilted suits by Dolce & Gabbana are a bit too much, Moncler designed some more casual looks, with big quilted squares on jackets and trousers; or maybe you could appreciate those Dior coats?
But remember that it is better to avoid military green, or you'll look like the aforementioned hunter!


Anche gli accessori reclamano la loro dose di trapuntato, soprattutto se sono firmati Chanel, ed ecco allora cover per iPhone e iPad nel classico tessuto matelassé che conquista anche gli stivali.
Ma voi cosa ne pensate? Cercate sempre di evitarlo a causa del trauma infantile oppure siete disposte a chiudere un occhio sull'estetica  per le sue proprietà termiche?

Obviously, accessories want their part in this post!
We found quilted textures on iPhone and iPad covers (by Chanel), on shoes (both on elegant pumps and on Nike sneakers) and boots, and of course on bags!
What is your opinion on this trend? Do you (like me and Laura) try to avoid it, because of the childhood shock, or do you love its thermal insulations qualities and close an eye on the aesthetics?
