The ABC of a Victorian Christmas.

Rinvenuto per caso su di uno degli scaffali della Oxford University Library a Londra, nella sezione 'Libri rari', 



un abecedario natalizio, nella sua prima edizione del 1894, ci riporta tutta l'atmosfera di cui gli inglesi si circondavano vivendo la loro Christmas Season, 120 anni or sono, che, tra le nostre mani e sotto i nostri occhi, nella nostra epoca, si concretizza come una sorta di guida, di manuale circa tutto ciò che durante il periodo vittoriano era tradizionale; pubblicato da Frederick Warne & Co, casa editrice britannica celebre per pubblicazioni di libri per l'infanzia vittoriani, tra cui quelli di Beatrix Potter, esso, per tramite delle sue affascinanti pagine, ci fa letteralmente, e quasi per incanto, compiere un salto indietro nel tempo ... siete pronti a sfogliarlo con me ?
















Peccato che a questo preziosissimo testo, che, essendosi conservato nella sua prima edizione risalente a così tanti anni fa, faccia difetto l'ultima pagina, il cui contenuto ci è comunque noto facendo scorrere lo sguardo sulle due ultime pagine dell'indice: 
una lunga fila di giovani ( YOUNGLERS ) felici rappresentano la lettera Y mostrandoci come il Natale, per i vittoriani, fosse una vera e propria festiva di famiglia, mentre la Z mostra ZANY, il celebre clown alle pantomime popolari, rappresentato come un Jolly.

la cui copertina sul retro reca un girotondo di fanciulli che gioiosi tengono per mano le lettere dell'alfabeto, prendo congedo da voi, amici e lettori miei carissimi ed affezionati, nella speranza di avervi rallegrati facendovi tornare un po' ... bambini, come la stessa atmosfera natalizia vuole e, senza che in realtà ce ne rendiamo conto, ogni anno ci accade, grazie al Cielo !

Too bad that this invaluable text, which, having been preserved in its first edition dating back to so many years ago, is lacking the last page, the content of which we may know by sliding our gaze on the last two pages of the index:
a long line of young happy people ( YOUNGLERS ) represents the letter Y showing us as Christmas, for the Victorians, was a real family festivity, while the Z shows ZANY, the clown famous to popular pantomimes, represented as a Jolly.
