Tolkien e l'Esperanto / Tolkien and Esperanto

«Fino a oggi la cerniera tra Tolkien e l’esperanto era uno stralcio di lettera pubblicata nel maggio 1932 sulla rivista «The British Esperantist». In realtà, il meraviglioso mensile della British Esperantist Association, nasconde almeno altre due informazioni utili a ricostruire il rapporto tra il futuro autore dello Hobbit e del Signore degli Anelli e la lingua artificiale inventata da Ludwik Lejzer Zamenhof. Qui si presentano i risultati di una ricerca condotta sulla rivista esperantista britannica, la quale ha rivelato due documenti a oggi inediti che vedono coinvolto direttamente J.R.R. Tolkien: il XXIV British Esperanto Congress dell’aprile 1933 e l’appello The Educational Value of Esperanto firmato da venti personalità inglesi nel maggio dello stesso anno».

Numerosi apprezzamenti provengono dal mondo tolkieniano ed esperantista. Arden R. Smith, che con Patrick H. Wynne ha scritto il più importante saggio sull’argomento, “Tolkien and Esperanto” («SEVEN: An Anglo-American Literary Review», Vol. 17, 2000, pp. 27-46), scrive che «Cilli ha scoperto delle informazioni per lungo tempo ignorate sul rapporto tra Tolkien il movimento esperantista, e il suo articolo sul tema sarà d’interesse per i tolkieniani e gli esperantisti. Ed io lo sono entrambi». Apprezzamenti arrivano anche dal Società Tolkieniana italiana rappresentata dal suo presidente Domenico Dimichino e da Renato Corsetti, Vice Presidente della Federazione Esperantista Italiana arrivano le «congratulazioni e un grazie in nome degli Esperantisti italiani». Infine, Tim Owen, Segretario dell’ Esperanto Association of Britain, dopo che sul profilo istituzionale dell’associazione britannica ha ritwittato l’articolo, scrive «grazie per questo articolo affascinante. Ero consapevole del fatto che Tolkien aveva mostrato un interesse per l’Esperanto, quando era giovane, ma non avevo idea che il suo coinvolgimento sia arrivato a sostenere la sua presenza nelle scuole. Su questa base, sono sicuro che sarebbe stato contento di sapere che diverse scuole elementari in Inghilterra hanno introdotto l’esperanto come modello per aiutare i bambini a sviluppare le competenze con le altre lingue. Grazie ancora per il vostro duro lavoro nel mettere insieme quest’articolo, che ho apprezzato molto. «The best known connection between Tolkien and Esperanto has been extracts from a letter by Tolkien published in May 1932 in the journal «The British Esperantist». In fact, the wonderful monthly publication of the British Esperantist Association holds at least two other pieces of information that can be useful in reconstructing the relationship between the future author of The Hobbit and of The Lord of the Rings and the artificial language invented by Ludwik Lejzer Zamenhof. Here we present the results of a research conducted on the British magazine and which reveals two unpublished documents in which J.R.R. Tolkien is directly involved: the 24th British Esperanto Congress in April 1933, and the appeal “The Educational Value of Esperanto” signed by twenty British personalities in May of the same year (and among these…)».Several appreciations come from the Tolkienian world and from international Esperanto. Arden R. Smith -  which together with Patrick H. Wynne wrote the most important essay on the subject, "Tolkien and Esperanto” («SEVEN: An Anglo-American Literary Review», Vol. 17, 2000, pp. 27-46) - writes: «Cilli's research has uncovered long-lost information about Tolkien's connection to the Esperanto movement, and his article on the subject will be of interest to Tolkienists and Esperantists. I am both». Congratulations and appreciations come also from the Italian Tolkien Society represented by its Chairman Domenico Dimichino. Meanwhile, the Esperanto Association of Britain retweettedCilli’s article on his own twitter profile and they want to quote it having the intention of mentioning it in the July issue of their magazine The Brita Esperantisto («The British Esperantist»), Italian Esperantists write, at the hands of Renato Corsetti, Vice President of the Italian Esperanto Federation, «Congratulations and thanks on behalf of the Italian Esperanto». Finally, Tim Owen, Secretary of the Esperanto Association of Britain, writes: «Thank you for this fascinating article. I was aware that Tolkien had shown an interest in Esperanto when he was young but had no idea that his involvement went as far as endorsing its presence in schools. On this basis I'm sure he would've been pleased to know that several primary schools in England did introduce Esperanto as a way of helping children develop the skills to learn further languages. Thank you once again for your hard work putting together this article, which I thoroughly enjoyed. To date, is provided a Spanish translation that will be released in the journal of the Sociedad Tolkien Española; a translation into esperanto for the Italian magazine «L’Esperanto»;  an article on the Esperanto magazine «Il Foglio Volante - La Flugfolio» and the English version on «The Brita Esperantisto» (The British Esperantist), the magazine of Esperanto Association of Britain.
