A maggio A Companion to J. R. R. Tolkien, una raccolta curata da Stuart D. Lee

Il maggio del 2014 riserva moltissime sorprese sul piano degli studi tolkieniani. Il 22 maggio uscirà il ''Beowulf: A Translation and Commentary'', inedito di Tolkien sul leggendario poema e nello stesso mese, l’inglese Wiley-Blackwell pubblica un volume che merita tutte le attenzioni: "A Companion to J. R. R. Tolkien".
Il libro, che conta ben 608 pagine, è una raccolta di saggi destinata a studiosi e ricercatori tolkieniani ma anche a fan interessati a saperne di più sulla vita, il lavoro, i temi dominanti, le influenze e le posizioni della critica sulle opere del professore di Oxford. A scriverlo un team di studiosi tra i più importanti al mondo chiamato ma discutere e ad analizzare le opere accademiche e letterarie di Tolkien tra cui il suo ultimo libro postumo, The Fall of Arthur, e gli adattamenti cinematografici come i nuovi film dedicati a The Hobbit. Il libro indaga sui vari temi del corpustolkieniano come mitopoiesi, lingue medievali, la natura, la guerra, la religione, e la sconfitta del male affrontando anche temi quali l'impatto del suo lavoro sull’arte, cinema, musica, giochi, e le successive generazioni di scrittori fantasy.
Il curatore è Stuart D. Lee, membro della Facoltà d’inglese presso l'Università di Oxford. Lee è Reader dell'Università in E-learning and Digital Libraries e un membro del Merton College. Ha studiato letteratura medievale e per oltre trent’anni le opere di Tolkien. Il suo lavoro di ricerca si concentra sull'impatto della letteratura medievale sulla cultura moderna. Tiene conferenze sull’inglese antico, Tolkien, e la Poesia della Prima Guerra Mondiale. È co-autore di Key Concepts in Medieval Literature(2006) e The Keys of Middle-earth: Discovering Medieval Literature through the Fiction of J. R. R. Tolkien(2005).
