Potato and rosemary croquette
Down the via Nomentana, taking a bus from Termini Station, you can easily reach one of the most heterogeneous districts of Rome, the architectonic melting pot known as Montesacro. The area developed throughout the 20th century, starting around 1920, when Rome experienced a dramatic population increase and new urban plans were about to be created. As an attempt, following the at-that-time popular Garden City Movement, architects experimented the so-called Garden City urban plan, which is still visible now. Basically a composite structure of small houses agglomerates, surrounded by parks and gardens, whose glorious "entrance" is the interesting Piazza Sempione, the area slightly resembles the one of Garbatella. Historically speaking, the experiment was not appreciated as it maybe deserved to; still, Montesacro is one of the most populated districts of Rome, and it preserves a certain pleasant atmosphere. This is the context in which we find one of the most celebrated pizzeria in Rome.Artichokes and mozzarella pizza dressed with a tuna sauce
Angelo e Simonetta established their popularity long ago, and way before a more "modern" approach to pizza al taglio emerged in recent years. What you find here is, at a glance, a solid experience in pizza-making, that allowed them to keep their reputation intact year after year. Customers come here regularly, and thanks to the new media and the internet and to their positive reviews, the voice spread towards every single corner of the city, so that now they come from everywhere to taste their famous creatures. Pizza is a crunchy layer of long-leavening dough, and toppings combinations are maybe less creative than elsewhere, yet the overall product is at a top level of satisfaction. Try, for instance, the bufala and melanzane one, the perfect marriage of fresh vegs and fairly acid cheese; or even the potato pizza, which can be quite dull at times, but not if served with a generous topping of salsa tartufata (truffle sauce), as the one they make here. Full, clean flavours, that don't need a special touch or hint, but just the wise hands and the deep knowledge of people that made pizza for their entire life. Cheese based pizza, like the 4 formaggi, are scrumptious as well: never too heavy, never too invasive, the strong flavour of cheese is perfectly balanced for the maximum result. If you are embarking on a journey around the best street food in Rome, it's impossible not to come across Angelo e Simonetta; let's say, you kinda HAVE to include them in your list. And, we promise, you will never regret it.
The perfect soundtrack: a piece of traditional romanità presented by a prophet of the perfect mix of music & poetry: Gabriella Ferri that sings Vecchia Roma.
