Mancano ormai poco meno di due anni al prossimo Tour dei British & Irish Lions, previsto nel 2017 in Nuova Zelanda, ma la macchina organizzativa è già ampiamente in moto.
È notizia recente che l'azienda forse più "quintessenzialmente" rugbystica del pianeta, Canterbury, sarà il nuovo sponsor tecnico della selezione delle Home Nations, sostituendo adidas che ha fornito materiale tecnico - e qualche maglia davvero bella, come quella del Tour del 2009 in Sud Africa - per 5 Tour in tredici anni.
Canterbury ha iniziato la sua collaborazione coi Lions decisamente "col botto", rilasciando subito un gioiello in edizione limitata. Si tratta, infatti, della replica quasi fedele - salvo piccoli adattamenti - della divisa che i Lions hanno indossato nel Tour del 1959, fornita, allora, proprio dall'Azienda con le "CCC". Saranno infatti disponibili per tutti gli appassionati un numero limitato di maglie, 1959, ad un costo che si aggira attorno agli £80.
Ecco un estratto del comunicato stampa ufficiale rilasciato dai B&I Lions: " The deal brings together two of rugby's most celebrated brands and sees Canterbury hold exclusive rights to manufacturing both the match and training kit alongside a new lifestyle range for the Lions. (...) Canterbury's relationship with the British & Irish Lions dates back to the 1959 tour of New Zealand. During the tour Canterbury produced their first Lions shirt, answering the call for a new strip after it was spoiled in a prior encounter, cementing their reputation for producing innovative and durable rugby apparel.
To mark the announcement and celebrate their historic meeting years ago, Canterbury have re-issued 1,959 limited edition versions of the British & Irish Lions jersey worn on the tour of 1959. The shirt will be the first piece in the new 'Since 1888' range, a premium collection dedicated to combining the rich history of the Lions with Canterbury's own commitment to the game.
