The protagonists of your paintings are very original, surreal. What do you want to communicate through these surreal portraits?
Cosa vuoi comunicare attraverso questi quadri surreali?
I like to use the surreal element to allow the viewer of the art to determine their own message. I don't really like telling people what I think my art means to me because I think it can diminish what it means to them. So, I like to leave it open. I just like to juxtapose interesting elements so that a vast array of meanings can be composed.
What inspire you to portray these subjects?
Cosa ti ispira nel ritrarre i tuoi soggetti?
You know, people ask about what inspires me the most, or what gives me ideas etc. And I don't really have an answer for that. More than anything I think colors inspire me. If you can put certain colors together that make a painting stand out it almost doesn't matter what the subject is. So, I like to pick subjects that are universally likable and use interesting colors to put them together.
What kind of technique do you use?
Quali tipi di tecniche usi?
My technique shifts from day to day because I use a lot of different mediums. Lately I've been using primarily india ink and brushes and water. At times I throw some acrylic in it. Also my technique will change sometimes mid painting. If I don't like how the thing is turning out I might completely shift gears and find a new way to get what I'm looking for. A lot of times that never works and I end up with a painting that is not at all what I was trying to do... then I end up liking it anyway. That's always a good feeling. Messing something up better than you could have done if you had done it right.
How do you describe your art?
Come descrivi la tua arte?
How do I describe my art? When I meet people in person and they find out that I'm an artist they ask me "what kind of art do you do?" I have yet to find an answer that satisfies me. I start off by telling them that a lot of it is a watercolor style with a surreal element with characters. That doesn't sound right to me though, but they always say, "Oh, okay, awesome!" and I give them a business card. They seem happy with that response and I guess I should be happy too because when they email me later after checking my art out they seem to like it.
What are your plans for the future (regarding your art)?
My plans for the future... Well, because I never really wanted to pursue art as a career I would go through times of making a lot of art and times where I didn't do anything at all. I want to change that. I want to make sure that I now can draw everyday at least a little bit... forever. Never stop. I make my art for me and I shouldn't let myself down for not making it.
