“Beauty”: can it be defined? Or not? In fact, it is an “originary” notion: i.e. a not-perfectly-definable one. The way in which we acknowledge the beauty of a painting (as the “Mona Lisa” of Leonardo, with her “enigmatic” smile): this is what we want to examine. I look at it: thus it is something which I know with my sight; however: being “enigmatic” (in her smile) is something I can grasp only with my thought. My acknowledging beauty is an act of “admiration”: which unifies sensitive and intellectual knowledge. Thus “admiration” of beauty is an act of our “cogitative” (i.e. “ratio particularis”). However it is difficult to explain to other people what my admiration of beauty is. The act of admiring beauty is influenced by our affectivity. This is the reason why there are so many different “tastes” in our “admiration” of beauty.

"Beauty": può essere definito? O no? In realtà, è un concetto "originario": cioè un non-perfettamente definibile. Il modo in cui riconosciamo la bellezza di un dipinto (come la "Monna Lisa" di Leonardo, con il suo sorriso "enigmatico"): questo è ciò che vogliamo esaminare. La guardo: così è una cosa che so che con la mia vista; comunque: essere "enigmatica" (nel suo sorriso) è qualcosa che posso capire solo con il mio pensiero.La mia bellezza riconoscimento è un atto di "ammirazione": che unifica conoscenza sensibile e intellettuale. Così
"Ammirazione" della bellezza è un atto di nostri "cogitative" (cioè "rapporto particularis"). Tuttavia è difficile spiegare ad altre persone quello che la mia ammirazione della bellezza è. L'atto di ammirare la bellezza è influenzata dalla nostra affettività. Questo è il motivo per cui ci sono così tanti "gusti" differenti nel nostro "ammirazione" della bellezza.
