JWM è stato programmato da Joe Wingbermuehle, nato nel 1981 nel Missouri La caratteristica di questo ambiente grafico è di essere molto leggero e veloce rispetto ad altri ambienti, come per esempio KDE e GNOME.
JWM è usato come standard nella mini distribuzione Puppy Linux.
JWM è composto da un desktop a icone basato su rox-filer, di un menù utente e anche di un sistema di temi GTK.
JWM ha un suo pannello di configurazione che consente di impostare lo sfondo, il tema, le applicazioni nella barra degli strumenti, il sistema di focus ed altre opzioni minori.

JWM session in Xsessions (leafpad) Create a file in /usr/share/xsessions/jwm.desktop with the following text: -
[Desktop Entry]
Encoding=UTF-8
Name=Jwm
Comment=Log in using Jwm
Exec=/usr/bin/jwm
Icon=
Type=XSession

JWM menu tree The menu can be accessed from clicking anywhere on the desktop. -
JWM menu button, desktop button and pager Customize the Desktop. -
JWM clock and system status There is a clock in the bottom right. -
JWM config file The config file is in /etc/jwm/ which will need to be copied to your home directory (as a hidden file) for personalized settings, wallpaper (background) and menus. Your wallpaper can be modified under "Background type" ("tile" is tile, "solid" is solid color, "gradient" is gradient color, "image" is an image stretched to fit). Restart JWM to apply it.
To launch applications on startup add to .jwmrc the following text (anywhere between the <JWM> tags)
