Il sonetto The Cross of Snow racconta invece il dolore di Henry Wadsworth Longfellow per la tragica morte della giovane moglie in un incendio. La poesia è stata scritta 18 anni dopo la morte della donna. Nel tentativo di salvarla, Longfellow stesso si procurò delle ustioni sul viso che in seguito lo portarono a smettere di rasarsi e a farsi crescere la caratteristica barba.
