FRUITA, COLORADO – Sembra la trama macabra di un pessimo film splatter, eppure è realmente accaduto (almeno così pare) tra il 1945 e il 1947.
Tutto iniziò quando il signor Olsen nel tentativo di decapitare uno dei suoi polli (Mike, come sarebbe stato ribatezzato di lì a poco), mancò la giugulare e parte del tronco encefalico che rimasero attaccati al corpo. L’animale sopravvisse, e pure bene. Mangiava beveva e cresceva persino. Divenne una star del mondo circense e fruttava molto al suo padrone, che lo alimentava direttamente nell’esofago con una siringa. Finchè Olsen dimenticò la pinzetta con cui liberava le vie aeree del poveretto dal muco, l’esofago si ostruì e il povero MIke -finalmente- spirò.

MIKE THE HEADLESS CHICKENIt’s like the plot of an awul splatter movie, but it happened in real life (or it seems so), between 1945 and 1947.
It all started when Mr Olsen, beheading one of his chicken ( which was named Mike since then), missed the chicken’s jugular vein and part of its encephalic trunk, which remained attached to the body.
The chicken survived and in good health too: it could eat, drink and it even grew. It became a circus star, bringing in a lot to his owner, who fed it directly in the esophagus using a syringe. But one day Olsen forgot the cleaning syringe used to free the poor chicken’s respiratory tract from mucus: the esophagus became obstructed and poor Mike, finally, passed away.
