Painting of the week: Mariana in the South

Non è un caso che questo autore sia già stato protagonista di questa rubrica, ma l'irresistibile fascino che le sue opere continuano ad esercitare su di me, m' impone di proporne nuovamente una.
Protagonista di questo dipinto del 1897, uno dei più significativi di "Misura per Misura", opera problematica di William Shakespeare, in cui Mariana, giovane promessa sposa di Angelo, viene abbandonata a causa dello smarrimento della sua dote. Quest'ultimo, chiamato a fare le veci del duca di Vienna è in realtà un uomo scostante e degenere, disposto a qualunque cosa pur di assecondare i suoi vizi. Ciò che è rappresentato nel dipinto infatti, altro non è che un forte stato di angoscia per il ripudio subito, diversamente da quanti lo identifichino invece con la raffigurazione della vanità, che la fanciulla inanzi allo specchio sembra voler incarnare. Il suo volto, osservandolo con attenzione, non appare affatto compiaciuto o sereno; piuttosto, l'espressione della giovane è triste e tormentato. Sul pavimento e alla base dello specchio giacciono le lettere d'amore scambiate con Angelo, come a simboleggiare la rassegnazione della donna, il crollare delle sue speranze.
Mariana è cosciente della sua bellezza, ma dinanzi allo specchio si chiede se questa non sia vana se non è utile al suo amato. L'angoscia insopportabile e la solitudine sono motivo portante di questo dipinto, per un amore che non può più attuarsi. La luce che fuoriesce dalla porta sembra invocarla se pur da lontano, ma essa è ancorata alla sua passione e rifiutandone la percezione, rimane all'ombra dello specchio, nella guastata attesa di un qualcosa che non le verrà mai più restituito.

The protagonist of this work, painted in 1897, one of the most significant "Measure for Measure" character, a work issue of William Shakespeare, in which Mariana, a young woman betrothed to Angelo, was abandoned because of the loss of her dowry. The latter, called to take the place of the of Vienna Duke is actually a degenerate and unfriendly man, willing to do anything to satisfy his own vices. What's represented in the painting in fact, is nothing more than a strong state of anxiety about the immediately divorce, unlike those who identify instead with the depiction of vanity, that the girl in front of the mirror seems to embody. But her face, don't seem at all pleased or clear; rather, the expression of the girl is sad and troubled. On the floor and the base of the mirror lies love letters exchanged with Angelo, as a symbol of the woman resignation, the collapse of her hopes.
Mariana is conscious of her beauty, but before the mirror she wonders if this is not vain without his beloved. The unbearable anguish and loneliness are the main themes of this painting, for a love that can't be implemented. The light that comes out from the door seems to invoke her from afar, but she's anchored to her passion and rejecting the perception she remains in the shadow of the mirror, in the spoiled waiting for something that will not ever returned.
