Questo è il quarto volume della serie Oxford English Monographs di cui J.R.R. Tolkien è stato uno dei General Editors.

Tolkien è stato anche uno dei curatori generali per l’Oxford English Monographs, una serie che lo vide presente dalla prima pubblicazione nel 1940 fino al suo ritiro nel 1959. Si suppone, senza giusta conferma, che abbia partecipato anche come capo redattore nel maggior parte del periodo che dedicò alla serie. Uno scritto a firma di Tolkien, però, compare solo come nota introduttiva al volume del 1958 ‘The Old English Apollonius of Tyre’ edito da Peter Goolden dove spiegava il ritardo della pubblicazione dell'edizione di Goolden. Lo stesso Goolden scrive nella sua introduzione: "Sono anche in debito con i redattori dell’Oxford English Monographs per aver intrapreso la scrittura della pubblicazione, in particolare con il professor J.R.R. Tolkien, che ha gentilmente suggerito revisioni nella presentazione e nello stile, e questi miglioramenti sono stati molto apprezzati ".

Sir Orfeo is a retelling in early fourteenth-century verse of the Classical legend of Orpheus and Eurydice, strongly influenced by Celtic traditions of the Other World. The story has been given a happy ending, and the result is a fairy-tale of great charm and delicacy. The outstanding literary merit of the poem has long been recognized, yet there has been no separate edition of it for nearly seventy-five years, and the three manuscript versions have never before been printed together in full. In the present edition the three texts are preceded by a fresh survey of the literary relationship of the story and an examination of the linguistic forms which leads to new conclusions about the dialect of the poem. Notes and an exhaustive glossary are included for the convenience of the student.
