The polyptych of San Martino, Treviglio a pearl of the Lombard Renaissance

Just outside the city of Milan, in the beautiful town of Treviglio, I have found one of  the pearl of the Lombard Renaissance. I discovered it accidentally and I have been fascinated immediately. Inside the basilica of San Marino and Santa Maria Assunta, you will find the polyptych of San Martino, which dates from the late fifteenth century. Thanks to the documents in the State Archives of Milan, we have detailed information about this magnificent work.
The art work was commissioned in 1485, the two painters were Bernardo Butinone and Bernardo Zenale. Obviously the frame was commissioned to a sculptor who prepared it in 4 years. The Polyptych  represents some saints known by the people, the patrons of Treviglio and some  episodes from the life of Christ- in accordance with the painting rules of the Rinascimento.
If you happen to admire it, you will see at the top of the representation the Madonna and child in a perfect graphic balance with two groups of the saints- on the left Saint Lucia, Saint Catherine of Alexandria, St. Mary Magdalene. On the right St. John the Baptist, St. Stephen and St. John the Evangelist. The portion below was dedicated: center - the story of St. Martin and the poor sides - various portrays of the saints The predella , in the lower part of the Polyptych has -from left to right- the adoration of the shepherds, the Crucifixion and the Resurrection , confirming the presence of the scenes from the life of Christ .Even if the two artists often worked together,  their style of painting is slightly different. Butinone- who painted in this Polittico the right side and Our Lady at the top- had a more harsh and hard style.  Zenale- who painted the left side and the San Martin and the poor, was searching the classic and the harmony of the forms. This art  work is beautiful in every detail- from every prospective you observe it. The buff of the Renaissance and the art buff will be pleasantly surprised by this magnificent polyptych.
Appena fuori dalla città di Milano, nella bella cittadina di Treviglio, ho scoperto che viene conservata una delle perle del rinascimento lombardo. Mi è capitato di scoprirlo per caso e ne sono subito stata affascinata. Entrate nella basilica di San Marino e Santa Maria Assunta, vi troverete di fronte  al Polittico di San Martino che risale alla fine del XV secolo. Grazie  a dei documenti  nell’Archivio di Stato di Milano abbiamo delle informazioni dettagliate su questa magnifica opera. Il lavoro fu commissionato nel 1485: i due pittori furono Bernardo Butinone e Bernardo Zenale. Ovviamente la cornice fu commissionata ad uno scultore che la preparò in 4 anni. Il Polittico  si incentrò sulla rappresentazione  di santi conosciuti dal popolo,dei patroni di Treviglio ed episodi della vita di Cristo, nel rispetto delle regole pittoriche del tempo. Se vi capiterà di ammirarlo potrete vedere nella parte superiore la rappresentazione della  Madonna con il bambino perfetto equilibrio grafico due gruppi di santi: sulla sinistra Santa Lucia, Santa Caterina D’Alessandria, Santa Maddalena. Sulla destra  San Giovanni Battista, Santo Stefano e San Giovanni Evangelista. La porzione sottostante fu dedicata: al centro – l’episodio di San Martino e il povero ai lati – varie figure di santi La predella , nella parte inferiore del Polittico vede da sinistra a destra : l’adorazione dei pastori, la Crocifissione e la Resurrezione a conferma della presenza delle scene di vita di Cristo che vi avevo detto.Nonostante i due pittori lavorarono spesso insieme il loro stile pittorico è leggermente differente. Butinone, che dipinse in questo Polittico la parte destra e la Madonna nella parte superiore, aveva uno stile più aspro e secco mentre Zenale, che dipinse la parte sinistra e il San Martino e il povero,  era alla ricerca della classicità e dell’armonia delle forme. Eppure se ben guardate l’opera è splendida in ogni suo particolare . Gli amanti del rinascimento e dell’arte non potranno che rimanere senza fiato di fronte a questo magnifico polittico.
