Catania's theater near the palaces of XVIII century
Catania is one of the cities that I love a lot in the beautiful Sicily. Its bright colors and the smile of the people always welcomed me with hospitality. Under the touristic point of view Catania has a multitude of realities , starting from the Greek and Roman splendor , across the middle ages , up to the XIX century and the contemporary age. The entrances are called vomitoria like in the coliseum and in all the Roman theaters. This theater is located near the acropolis of the ancient city . The cavea – this name is original Latin – is very well preserved . This semicircular part of the theater was destined to the audience. A small section of marble separates the cavea from the orchestra area . Try to imagine this place as the fulcrum of the Catania’s life in the past – while today it is only a memory of the ancient times. The chromatically alternation between black and white - willfully created- had given an impressive visual impression. Unfortunately this chromatic effect has been taken away from the centuries. Today the theater is surrounded by some historic buildings from the XVIII century that create a suggestive set, but there is a different impact than the original architectural ensemble . Anyway, what can you do? Every time has its influence on the surrounding environment and the history can only remember nostalgically the past , the same past that seems always more positive than the present time . This is what we feel now about the past and what the next generations will think about us . Inside the theatre
Una delle città che amo nella bella Sicilia è sicuramente Catania. I suoi colori chiari e il sorriso della gente mi accoglie sempre facendomi sentire bene. Eppure da un punto di vista strettamente turistico Catania non ha un solo aspetto, racchiude in se una molteplicità di realtà da scoprire: dallo splendore greco e romano, l medioevo, dall’ottocento all’età contemporanea. Uno dei monumenti che mi lascia sempre piacevolmente impressionata è il bellissimo teatro romano. Come nel colosseo e in tutti i teatri, si accede tramite i vomitoria. Il teatro sorge ai piedi dell’acropoli della antica città. Molto ben conservata è ancora la cavea, nome di origine latina : questa struttura di forma semicircolare ospitava le gradinate dove soleva mettersi il pubblico. Una piccola sezione di marmo divide la cavea dalla zona destinata all’orchestra. Provate ad immaginare questo luogo, oggi solo ricordo di un fulgido passato, come fulcro di vita della Catania del tempo. Cromaticamente un alternarsi di bianco e nero, prodotto come gioco voluto, creava un effetto sicuramente spettacolare che purtroppo il tempo si è portato via. Oggi il teatro è circondato da storici palazzi del XVIII secolo che rendono l’insieme sicuramente suggestivo, ma di differente impatto rispetto all’originale insieme architettonico. D'altronde che cosa si può fare? Ogni epoca interviene alla sua maniera condizionando l’ambiente circostante e la storia non resta che un nostalgico ricordo di un passato che sembra sempre più positivo del presente. Così è e così sarà in ogni tempo.
