This (almost) daily post intends to follow up the activity changes of volcanoes all over the world.
This post is written by geologist Richard Wilson who specializes in Volcano seismicity and Armand Vervaeck. Please feel free to tell us about new or changed activity if we haven’t written about it. -

September 10, 2012 volcano activity

Our prayers have been answered!  SNET has restored access to the San Cristobal seismograms (station CRIN), although the volcano seems to have returned to its “normal” mode of frequent, low-magnitude, low-frequency earthquakes and tremor.Elsewhere, spasms of higher magnitude earthquakes, interspersed between periods of lower level activity continue to affect Little Sitkinvolcano (AK) (station LSSA).Exhalations (of mostly steam and gas) have been occurring an average of once per hour the past twenty-four hours at Popocatepetl volcano (Mexico).  The Popo seismogram again shows the M4.7 west coast earthquake (upper left), as well as a relatively large magnitude (M3.0?) local earthquake (lower) and smaller local events.

Seismograms from Pacaya volcano (Guatemala) (station PCG) continue to show pulses of volcanic tremor (and alot of transmission static) there today.

Telica volcano (Nicaragua) exhibits its usual mix of volcanic earthquakes and tremor (station TELN), while small seismic (?) events remain apparent on seismograms at Apoyeque volcano (station APYN).

In Colombia, Machin volcano quickly returned to quiet after firing-off a volley of felt earthquakes yesterday.  Low-frequency earthquakes and tremor have simmered at Nevado Del Ruiz volcano (station OLLZ) as well.  Some tremor and small earthquakes are visible on seismograms at Galeras volcano (station ANGV) today.

Tungurahua volcano (Ecuador) continues to tremble with small volcanic earthquakes and low-level tremor this morning. (station RETU)

White Island (New Zealand) also trembles with continuous volcanic tremor and small earthquakes.

A lot of talk these days about articles published in Nature Geoscience about inflating (read explosion) of Santorini and a possible eruption about Mt Fuji, Japan who always … erupts after a massive earthquake in the area. Erik Klemitti wrote a great article in diminishing the possibility of the so called ‘soon to erupt’ volcanoes. Just like the building up of an eruption, magazines are building up their scoops and titles and at the end the volcano erupts already theoretically. Another doom scenario in the making ? They surely will erupt again somewhere in the future but there are NO direct signs of an imminent eruption right now. Click here to read Erik Klemetti’s article.

 Activity observed by satellites
Recent satellite imagery shows SO2-rich plumes eminating from Popocatepetl, Nevado del Ruiz, and Ambrym (Vanuatu) volcanoes.

Video
2 other great video’s today, and very recent ones. A little more than a week ago, James Reynolds (earthuncut.tv) witnessed the eruption of Anak Krakatoa volcano (Indonesia). Incandescent lava shot at a close distance from a small boat.
The second video from OysteinLundAndersen.com is from the same eruption but with the lens pointed at the crater. Look very good towards the flying lava bombs, huge lava hot rocks crashing on the slopes.

Ambrym volcano, Vanuatu

Nevado del Ruiz volcano, Colombia

Popocatepetl volcano, Mexico

Yes, I want to receive e-mail earthquake alerts based on the list/area below

[+] Read before you subscribe – click here

  • The selection of a weak Magnitude, a 24 hour delivery on a worldwide list would result in an avalanche of emails (each earthquake will generate an E-mail). A more selective Magnitude, delivery option and area of your interest will give the best result.
  • As we have decided not to use a control panel or password, the parameters of your subscription can only be changed by canceling your subscription (link in each Email we send). To fine-tune your options, simply generate a new subscription.
  • We will not share your E-mail with anyone else, it will be used only for earthquake alerts.
  • Please make sure that you are white listing our emails as otherwise they may be deviated to your spam folder.
