2. Sei stata un ingegnere per 15 anni. Come hai deciso di iniziare una carriera da scrittrice? Hai sempre voluto essere una scrittrice? Come e quanto sei cresciuta come scrittrice in questi anni?Alcuni dei miei amici volevano diventare scrittori dall'infanzia, ma io no. Ho scritto alcune storie a scuola, ma mi sono focalizzata sulle scienze e la matematica perché volevo fare una carriera pratica. Ho preso la mia laurea in ingegneria e ho iniziato la mia carriera tecnica. Non ho iniziato a scrivere fino a 7 anni fa. Stavo facendo un lungo viaggio e non mi ero portata abbastanza libri in valigia, quindi ho iniziato a scrivere le mie storie per non annoiarmi in hotel e in aeroporto. Era puramente un hobby, un piacere. Scrivevo ogni qualvolta avessi un momento libero. Dopo circa 5 anni mio marito mi ha suggerito di lasciare il mio lavoro. Pochi anni dopo ho venduto il mio primo libro!
3. Cosa fai quando scrivi? Hai un particolare processo creativo?
Io scrivo divertendomi, scrivo per ore finché non finisco. Quando il libro sta volgendo al termine, significa scrivere 20 ore al giorno. A volte ascolto musica, solitamente Barry Manilow o Josh Groban.
4. Cosa ti a ispirato a scrivere “Muori per me”?
Sono partita con l'idea di scrivere di un cattivo ossessionato con il Medioevo e le torture, ma appena ho iniziato a scrivere di Simon Vartanian, la sua ossessione si è trasformata in arte, in specifico catturando il momento della morte. Ho inserito i videogame nella storia dopo che uno dei miei studenti (lavoravo in una scuola superiore) aveva saltato la scuola per giocare all'ultima versione di Halo che era uscita la notte prima. Questo studente era un bravo ragazzo, ho pensato che il richiamo del gioco doveva essere forte per farlo stare a casa a giocare. Ho iniziato a ricercare sullo sviluppo dei videogame ed è stato intrigante.
5. Come fai a bilanciare così bene l'azione e la storia d'amore?
Grazie! Non lo so, mi viene spontaneo. Sono grata che riesco a farlo perché amo le storie d'amore.
6. Qual è stata la parte più difficile nello scrivere questo libro?
Sono andata fuori dal mio schema abituale in questo libro e arrivata alla fine avevo bisogno di riuscire a tessere i fili sciolti per cercare di unire le cose successe, il retroscena di Simon, il suo rapporto con il padre e i fratelli. Ma alla fine è andato tutto bene assieme!
7. Per favore dicci di più sull'eroe di Muori per me, Vito Ciccotelli. Cosa lo rende così speciale e perché hai sentito che era perfetto per Sophie? Da dove è nata l'idea di questi due protagonisti?
Vito è stato introdotto nel mio quinto libro, NON PUOI NASCONDERTI, che è la storia di sua sorella Tess. L'idea della famiglia Ciccotelli è nata ascoltando una vecchia collega insegnante. Il suo cognome era Ciccotelli e aveva questa meravigliosa famiglia italo-americana a Philadelphia. Appena mi parlò di loro iniziò a crescere anche la famiglia nel mio libro, Vito ha un carattere forte e conflittuale, che porta un terribile senso di colpa. Dietro a tutto ciò si nasconde un bravissimo uomo che vuole semplicemente una casa e una famiglia tutta sua. Lui vede in Sophie una donna ugualmente forte, che era importante per me. Volevo che lei fosse veramente forte. Penso che Sophie sia uno dei miei personaggi migliori! Se dovessi scegliere di incontrare uno di loro, sceglierei lei. Alcune delle ispirazioni per Sophie sono arrivate da mio marito che era un insegnante di storia. Lui voleva vestirsi con i costumi per insegnare ai suoi allievi e ho pensato fosse divertente per Sophie fare lo stesso.
8. Che tipo di ricerca hai fatto per questo libro?
Ho fatto molta ricerca sull'inquisizione e i mezzi di tortura. Ci sono resoconti di prima mano scritti dagli inquisitori che sono stati tradotti sui siti web di varie università. Ho fatto ricerche sullo sviluppo dei videogame parlando a progettatori attuali (è stato divertente!). Ho ricercato anche sull'opera, le arti protesiche, i prigionieri politici russi ecc. Ho trovato esperti arrivata a ogni parte del libro! Ho trovato che molte persone si divertono molto a parlare delle loro aree di esperienza.
9. Nel tuo libro lasci grandi spazi al serial killer. Come hai fatto a caratterizzarlo così bene, specialmente per quanto riguarda la sfera psicologica?
Grazie di nuovo! Simon non si prende per niente cura delle persone, sono solo errori da essere cancellati. Ma si prende cura della sua arte. Questo lo rende complicato. È sempre un po' difficile entrare nella mente dell'assassino. Quella di Simon era la più difficile. Non sapevo ancora molto della sua infanzia quando ho iniziato a scrivere del suo personaggio.La paura dei suoi fratelli mi ha terrorizzato. Loro erano cresciuti con lui e sapevano esattamente cosa sarebbe stato in grado di fare. (o così credevano).
10. Ci sono nuovi autori che hanno attratto il tuo interesse?
Mi piace leggere libri paranormali quando non scrivo. Ultimamente ho letto quasi tutto quello che hanno scritto CL Wilson, Nalini Singh e JR Ward.
Ho appena finito il mio 12° libro. (Muori per me è il mio settimo libro, URLA PER ME e UCCIDI PER ME completano la trilogia). Il mio dodicesimo libro si intitola TU APPARTIENI A ME e inizia una nuova serie sui poliziotti di Baltimora e gli accusatori. Sono quasi pronta per iniziare il mio tredicesimo libro.
12. C'è qualcosa in particolare che vuoi dire ai tuoi lettori?.

INTERVIEW 1. Hi Karen. I'm very happy to welcome on my blog. Would you like to introduce yourself to the Italian readers who have read your novel or who are going to do?
Hello there! I’m a former engineer and teacher. I now write full-time and am blessed to have found a career that I love. I have a wonderful husband and two daughters. We live in Florida with our dog and two cats. I write novels of gritty suspense, scary villains, and a hero and heroine that will find each other for a happy-ever-after. I hope that I’ll scare you, but also that I’ll make you smile at times. I’d also be pleased if you’re looking over your shoulder after reading one of my books!
2. You were an engineer for fifteen years. How did you happen to get started in your career as writer? Did you always want to be a writer? How much and how you grew as a writer all these years?
Many of my friends wanted to be writers from childhood, but I didn’t. I wrote a few stories in school, but focused on science and math as the path to a “practical” career. I earned my engineering degree and began my technical career. I didn’t start writing until about seven years later. I was traveling a great deal and couldn’t pack enough books into my suitcases – so I began writing my own stories to keep myself from becoming bored in hotels and in airports. It was purely a hobby, a pleasure. I wrote whenever I got a free moment. After about five years of this, my husband urged me to submit my work. A few years later, I sold my first book!
3. What do you do while are you writing? Have you a particular creative process?
I binge-write, that is, I write for hours at a time until I’m finished. As the book draws to a close, this might mean 20 hours a day. Sometimes I listen to music – usually Barry Manilow or Josh Groban.
I started out planning to write a villain who was obsessed with the Middle Ages and torture, but as I began writing Simon Vartanian, his obsession changed to art – specifically capturing the moment of death. I incorporated video games into the story after one of my students (I was a high school teacher then) skipped school to play the latest version of Halo which had been released the night before. This student was a good kid – I figured the lure of the game must be strong to keep him home playing. I began researching video game development and was intrigued!
5. How do you balance as well the action with the love story?
Thank you! I don’t know – it just comes out that way. I’m grateful that it does as I love the love stories.
6. What was the hardest part of writing this book?
I’d gone off my outline early on in this book and as I got to the end, I needed to weave the loose threads. Figuring out why things happened, Simon’s backstory, his relationship with is father – and siblings – made this book complicated. But in the end, it fell together!
7. Please tell us more about the hero in Die For Me , Vito Ciccotelli. What makes him so special and why did you feel he would be perfect for Sophie? Where the idea for this two main characters come from?
Vito was introduced in my fifth book, YOU CAN’T HIDE, which is his sister Tess’s story. The ideas for the Ciccotelli family came by listening to an old teaching colleague. Her last name was Ciccotelli and she had this wonderful Italian-American family in Philadelphia. As she talked about them, the family in my book began to grow. Vito is a strong but conflicted character, who carries a terrible burden of guilt. Underneath is a good man who simply wants a home and family of his own. He sees in Sophie an equally strong woman – that was important to me. I wanted her to be quirky, but very strong. I think Sophie is one of my coolest characters! If I ever got to meet one of my own characters, I’d choose her. Some of the inspiration for Sophie came from my own husband, who used to be a history teacher. He would dress up in costumes to teach his students and I thought it would be fun for Sophie to do the same.
8. What kind of research did you do for this book?
I did a lot of research into the Inquisition and true instruments of torture. There are first-hand accounts of Inquisitors that have been translated on various university websites. I researched video game development by talking to actual designers (that was fun!). There was also research on opera, prosthetic limbs, Russian political prisoners, etc. I found experts as I came to those parts of the book. I’ve found that most people really enjoy talking about their areas of expertise!
9. In your book you give plenty of space for serial killer. How did you manage to characterize it so well, especially in the his psychology sphere?
Again, thank you. Simon cares nothing for people, they are just bugs to be squashed. But he cares about his art. That made him complicated. It’s always a little difficult to get into the mind of a killer. Simon was the more difficult ones. I really didn’t know much about his childhood as I began to write his character. The fear his siblings feel made him scarier to me. They’d grown up with him and knew exactly what he was capable of doing (or so they think).
10. Are there any new authors that have sparked your interest?
I enjoy reading paranormal books when I’m not writing – lately I’ve read nearly everything written by CL Wilson, Nalini Singh, and JR Ward.
11. Do you have any other projects you're currently working on?
I’ve just finished my 12th book! (DIE FOR ME is my 7th book, by the way. SCREAM FOR ME and KILL FOR ME make up the rest of the trilogy.) My 12th book is called YOU BELONG TO ME and begins a new series about Baltimore cops and prosecutors. I’m just getting ready to start book #13.
12. Do you have anything specific that you want to say to your readers?
I’d like to thank them for all their support! I hope they enjoy Vito and Sophie’s story!
