Charles Dana Gibson e l'ideale edoardiano di femminilità: le 'Gibson Girls'.

Correva l'anno 1890 

quando su di un numero di Harper's Bazaar ( allora ancora Harper's Weekly ) fecero la comparsa per la prima volta i disegni a penna ed inchiostro dell'illustratore americano Charles Dana Gibson che rappresentavano i nuovi modelli proposti dalla moda: a vestirli donne slanciate, dal petto e dai fianchi generosi, ma da un sottile vitino a vespa, dalla così detta silhouette a clessidra, dai capelli acconciati morbidamente ad enfatizzare il languore dello sguardo, che assunsero da subito l'appellativo di Gibson Girls dal nome di colui che aveva loro dato vita.

L'epoca vittoriana stava in quegli anni volgendo al termine e la moda aveva già dato ormai il meglio di sè:

le gonne e gli abiti in genere avevano perso il loro volume, la crinolina cedeva il posto ai primi 'tailleur' dalle linee sempre più affusolate, le arricciature erano sempre meno generose per lasciare sempre più in evidenza le forme femminili.

Ovviamente Gibson, nella preparazione dei proprio disegni, o forse sarebbe più appropriato dire figurini, non si rifaceva a donne che esistevano solamente nella sua fantasia, ma era ispirato da modelle in carne ed ossa la cui silhouette era disegnata da corsetti che rendevano difficoltoso persino l'atto del respirare !





 ( la leggenda vuole che alcune donne si facessero persino asportare chirurgicamente alcune costole pur di poter stringere al massimo il proprio corsetto anche se è più verosimile pensare che forse, indossandoli a partire già dalla giovinezza, approfittassero dell'elasticità delle stesse per modificare la forma del proprio corpo secondo le esigenze della moda ).







E fu così che in epoca edoardiana, periodo in cui la donna stava sempre più conquistandosi, seppure con fatica, un proprio spazio all'interno della società, le Gibson Girls, con la loro silhouette ed i loro capelli cotonati raccolti in morbidi 'chignons' nelle famose acconciature 'Pompadour', divennero espressione dell'ideale di bellezza e di femminilità del tempo; ma vediamo insieme chi furono coloro che ispirarono in Gibson questo nuovo modello di donna, quasi un po' trasgressivo, subentrato a quello 
dell'angelo del focolare proprio dell'epoca vittoriana.

IRENE LANGHORNE  ( 1873 - 1956 ) - Sorella di colei che divenne Lady Nancy Astor, fu la prima ad ispirare Gibson quando la conobbe ad un party e trovò in lei la propria musa: politicamente attiva ( fu la prima donna ad entrare al Parlamento inglese come membro della Camera dei Comuni), spigliata, affascinante ed intelligente incarnava alla perfezione l'ideale della Gibson Girl ed, insieme con le sue altrettanto affascinanti ed eleganti sorelle Nancy, Lizzie, Phyllis e Norma, poserà più volte per Gibson di cui, nel 1895, diverrà la moglie. 

EVELYN NESBIT  ( 1884 - 1967 ) - Probabilmente la più bella delle Gibson Girls anche se non vi sono prove che abbia affettivamente posato per l'illustratore americano, divenuta tristemente celebre nel 1906 per il processo in cui fu coinvolta dopo che il marito,
il milionario Henry Kendall Thaw, ne uccise l'amante, l'architetto Stanford White, si fece notare per gli abiti maliziosi con cui compariva quotidianamente in tribunale, che, in modo quasi provocatorio, conquistarono al tempo tutte le donne d'America. 

CAMILLE CLIFFORD  ( 1888 -1970 ) - Camille Antoinette Clifford, attrice di origine danese messasi in luce lavorando presso i più famosi teatri di New York prima e di Londra più tardi dove la sua bellezza riscosse un sensazionale successo.
Posò per la prima volta per Gibson agli inizi del secolo e rimase, probabilmente, la Gibson Girl più sofisticata ed autentica in quanto ad immagine, per i suoi morbidi capelli spesso cotonati e lavorati in acconciature a piramide e per la perfetta silhouette ad 'S'; si potrebbe dire che ella rappresentò in assoluto la quintessenza della Gibson Girl.





E prima di salutarvi vi lascio con un video d'epoca che illustra mirabilmente il successo e l'ascendente carismatico che le Gibson Girls immediatamente ebbero sul pubblico maschile ... 
... i 'gentlemen' perdevano letteralmente la testa per queste sinuose fanciulle !

Charles Dana Gibson and the Edwardian ideal of femininity: the 'Gibson Girls'.

It was the year 1890

when on a number of Harper's Bazaar (then still Harper's Weekly) made their appearance for the first time the drawings in pen and ink by the American illustrator Charles Dana Gibson who represented the new models proposed by fashion: to dress them, slender women, from the generous chest and hips, but a slim waists to wasp, from the so-called 'hourglass silhouette', with softly styled hair to emphasize the languor of their eye, who immediately took on the name of 'Gibson Girls' from the name of the man who had given them life.

In those years the Victorian era was coming to an end, and the fashion had already given the best of itself:

skirts and dresses in general had lost their volume, the crinoline gave its way to the first 'suit' by the lines more and more tapered, the curls were always less generous to let more and more visible the female form.

Obviously Gibson, in the preparation of his own designs, or perhaps it would be more appropriate to say figurines, didn't aligned himself to women existing only in his imagination, but he was inspired by real models whose silhouette was designed by corsets that made it difficult even the act of breathing !

(The legend has that some women even did remove surgically some ribs in order to be able to squeeze the most their corset although it's more likely to think that perhaps, starting wearing them in their youth, they took advantage of the elasticity of the same to change the shape of their body according to the needs of fashion).

And so it was that in the Edwardian era, a period in which the woman was increasingly acquiring, even with difficulty, her own space within the society, the Gibson Girls, with their silhouette and their big hair collected in soft 'chignons' in the famous hairstyles named 'Pompadour', became the expression of the ideal of beauty and femininity of the time; but let's see who were the ones that inspired Gibson in this new model of woman, almost a little unconventional, succeeded that of the angel at the hearth proper of the Victorian era.

- picture 13 on the left - IRENE LANGHORNE (1873 - 1956) - Sister of the woman who became Lady Nancy Astor, was the first to inspire Gibson when he first met her at a party and found in her his own muse: politically active (she was the first woman to enter the British Parliament as member of the House of Commons), jaunty, charming and intelligent embodied to perfection the ideal of the Gibson Girl and, along with her equally charming and stylish sisters Nancy, Lizzie, Phyllis and Norm, will pose several times for Gibson of which, in 1895, will become wife.

EVELYN NESBIT (1884 - 1967) - Probably the most beautiful Gibson Girl even though there's no evidence that she has affectively posed for the American illustrator, became sadly famous in 1906 for the trial in which she was involved after her husband,

the millionaire Henry Kendall Thaw, killed her lover, architect Stanford White, she made note herself for the clothing with which, maliciously, she appeared daily in court that, in an almost defiant way, conquered at the time all the women of America.
- picture 15 on the right - CAMILLE CLIFFORD (1888 -1970) - Camille Antoinette Clifford, Danish actress who highlighted herself working in the most famous theaters in New York before and in London later where her beauty received a sensational success. 
She posed for the first time for Gibson at the beginning of the century and was probably the most sophisticated and authentic Gibson Girl as image, because of  her soft hair often teased and processed in pyramid shape hairstyles and the perfect 'S' shaped silhouette; we could say that she represented the absolute quintessence of the Gibson Girl.
And before than greeting you I leave you with a vintage video that admirably illustrates you the success and charismatic ascending that the Gibson Girls had immediately in the male audience ... 
... 'gentlemen' literally lost their head for these curvy girls!
