La Horror Writers Association (www.horror.org) ha annunciato i ballottaggi preliminari per la nuova edizione del premio Bram Stoker Awards; la cerimonia di assegnazione dei premi si svolgerà quest'anno a New Orleans dal 13 al 16 giugno, e incorporerà anche la World Horror Convention. Sotto trovate la lista delle opere, per le singole categorie, arrivate al ballottaggio preliminare. Tra queste opere saranno votate cinque finaliste che andranno ai ballottaggi finali (e saranno dunque definibili come nominations), che saranno annunciate il 23 febbraio e che concorreranno all'assegnazione del premio. I vincitori saranno comunicati direttamente alla cerimonia di premiazione ufficiale durante la convention a New Orleans.
Entrando nel dettaglio di questi ballottaggi premilinari: per la categoria Novel (miglior romanzo), mi fa personalmente piacere trovare il nome di Benjamin Kane Ethridge, amico e prezioso editor per la lingua inglese della casa editrice Mezzotints Ebook, di Caitlin Kiernan con The Drowning Girl, opera alla quale qualche giorno fa è stato dedicato un articolo su questo blog, in tempi non sospetti, e di John Everson, altro amico con il quale (come per Ethridge) abbiamo collaborato più volte, e che ha partecipato ad alcune antologie da me curate per Mezzotints Ebook, come Arkana - Racconti da Incubo e la recente Queen Anne's Resurrection - I Demoni del Mare. E' stata inserita una nuova categoria, YA Novel (romanzi per un pubblico giovane), nella quale si sono distinti amici come Jonathan Maberry (pubblicato in Italia da Delos Books) e Jeff Strand, anche lui tra i protagonisti della raccolta Queen Anne's Resurrection - I Demoni del Mare. Nella categoria Long Fiction (racconti lunghi) segnalo un autore che apprezzo molto, come Kealan Patrick Burke, da me intervistato tempo fa, l'amico e autore cult Jack Ketchum con quale più volte abbiamo collaborato per varie attività, presente tra l'altro nella antologia Arkana - Racconti da Incubo con il bellissimo racconto Twins (Gemelli), l'amico Gene O'Neill, che ha scritto una introduzione per il prossimo titolo in uscita di Mezzotints Ebook per la collana Buio (horror), ma non vi dico di più per ora, e Norman Prentiss, vero e proprio "mago" della narrativa breve di genere, anche lui da me intervistato qualche mese fa. Senza dimenticare Lee Thompson, che non finirò mai di raccomandare. Proseguendo nella lettura della lista delle opere arrivate al ballottaggio preliminare del premio, nella categoria Short Fiction trovo l'amico Bruce Boston, plurivincitore e dominatore fino a oggi della categoria Poetry (l'autore è comunque in ballottaggio anche nella sezione poesia), del quale sono stato onorato di tradurre e pubblicare sul mio blog Mezzotints alcune sue opere in versi, e Weston Ochse che disegna narrativa come piace a me, col quale siamo in contatto ormai da tempo, e che mi ha dato la possibilità di leggere alcune sue opere in anteprima. Nella categoria Fiction Collection (raccolte di racconti) sono felice di trovare il nome dell'amica Corrine De Winter, che ha scritto per il mio blog Mezzotints diverse opere tematiche in versi, e che ora avrò piacere di leggere, e apprezzare, in prosa. Nella categoria Non Fiction (saggistica) complimenti all'amica Lisa Morton per l'inserimento nel ballottaggio premilinare del suo Trick or Treat: A History of Halloween. Anche Lisa, grande talento che si muove agevolmente tra la narrativa e la saggistica, è tra i protagonista della raccolta Arkana - Racconti da Incubo (e protagonista delle mie affilate interviste Dieci Coltelli). Ma si tratta di una amicizia e collaborazione che mi onora e che ha riguardato molti altri aspetti, anche nella sua veste di vicepresidente della Horror Writers Association. Alla fine della lista trovate la categoria Graphic Novel (un'altra novità), e sono felice di leggere il nome di Rocky Wood con il suo Witch Hunts: A Graphic History of the Burning Times scritto insieme a Lisa Morton. Rocky Wood, Presidente della Horror Writer Association, al quale sono legato da profonda amicizia e stima, è autore di molti saggi cult su Stephen King (la sua recensione di Under The Dome di King la trovate sul mio blog Mezzotints), sarà presto protagonista sul Boia Scarlatto, con la pubblicazione di un piccolo saggio su King a puntate, davvero affascinante. Mi fermo qui e vi lascio leggere la lista delle opere in ballottaggio preliminare al premio Bram Stoker Awards. Da parte mia complimenti e in bocca al lupo a tutti gli autori, con l'auspicio di poter leggere presto, magari nella prossima edizione, qualche nome Italiano. Le premesse iniziano a crearsi, finalmente.
