I think all art is about concretizing ideas. I have an idea, a thought, a way of seeing something. Through painting I am giving that idea form so that it can be discussed.
Penso che tutta l’arte si basi sul concretizzare delle idee. Ho un’idea, un pensiero, un modo di vedere qualcosa. Attraverso i quadri quell’idea prende una forma che possa essere discussa.

Your expressive world is mainly linked to the female figure. Tell us about it. Il tuo mondo espressivo è collegato principalmente alla figura femminile. Parlacene.
I grew up in a household of all women. I lived with my mother and 2 older sisters. Both of my grandfathers had passed away before I was born. I had no male relatives nearby. I even attended an all women’s college. This obviously has shaped my view of the world.

What do you want to convey with your art? Is there an hidden message in your artwork? Cosa vuoi trasmettere con la tua arte? C’è un messaggio nascosto nelle tue opere?
I use food as a metaphor for the ways we distract ourselves from being present. Much of my work looks at compulsivity. The frenetic activity of the figures in my pieces contrasts with the placidness of their surroundings. The aerial view evokes the feeling of an out of body experience: the subject is watching herself engage in compulsive behavior but is unable to stop. There is an absurdity to the repetition of this act of compulsion. At the same time it is an attempt to find real nourishment.
Uso il cibo come metafora per il nostro modo di distrarci dall’essere presenti. Gran parte del mio lavoro riguarda la compulsività. L’attività frenetica delle figure nei miei dipinti contrasta con la placidità che le circonda. La vista “aerea” evoca la sensazione di un’esperienza extracorporea: il soggetto si guarda in un comportamento compulsivo che non è in grado di fermare. C’è un assurdità della ripetizione in questo atto e allo stesso tempo, è un cercare di trovare del vero nutrimento.

How important is food for you, or for those watching your works? Quanto è importante il cibo per te, o per chi guarda le tue opere?
Food is imbued with layers of meaning for many people. We associate different foods with our childhoods, holidays, celebrations, etc. Everyone has something around food. At the same time, in my paintings, I think you could substitute any compulsive behavior, any object that we overindulge in in order to find comfort, for the food.
Per molte persone il cibo è intriso di strati di significato. Associamo diversi alimenti con la nostra infanzia – feste, celebrazioni, ecc. Ognuno ha il suo rapporto con il cibo. Contemporaneamente, nei miei dipinti, penso che si possa sostituire qualsiasi comportamento compulsivo, qualsiasi oggetto di cui abusiamo al fine di trovare conforto, con il cibo.

My work is more about an idea than it is about a narrative. I would say the theme is “checking out” or compulsivity.

Are there regrets or remorse on your path? Ci sono dei rimorsi o rimpianti lungo il tuo percorso?
Everyone has regrets. I have more personal regrets than regrets in regard to my artwork. I definitely regret that I did not pursue a more serious artistic path earlier in my live. It wasn’t until I was in my late thirties that I got serious about my painting.
Tutti hanno dei rimorsi, Ho più rimorsi sul piano personale che su quello lavorativo. Sicuramente rimpango di non aver seguito un percorso artistico più serio prima, nella mia vita. Non sono stato serio circa la pittura finché non ho passato i trent’anni.
