Primavera: cieli azzurri, fiori e amori in sboccio, tempo di passeggiate all’aria aperta col sole che bacia la pelle e… tempo di scoprire i nomi delle finaliste ai RITA Awards 2013.
Chi la spunterà quest’anno? Difficile a dirsi (ma non troppo).
Potremmo comunque saperlo soltanto il prossimo 20 luglio quando, durante l’annuale conferenza del RWA che si terrà ad Atlanta in Georgia, saranno resi noti i nomi dei vincitori.
Avete già una candidata nel cuore? La sottoscritta ovviamente sì ma per scaramanzia non lo dice e incrocia le dita!
Historical Romance Finalists
Per quanto riguarda la categoria Historical Romance, sono contenta soprattutto per Sarah MacLean e per il suo A Rogue by Any Other Name, primo volume della The First Rules of Scoundrels Series. Ho semplicemente adorato questo romanzo e, in particolare, il suo eroe: tormentato, cupo, in cerca di vendetta e disposto a tutto pur di ottenerla. Un bad boy freddo e spietato, proprio come piace a me. Sebbene la protagonista non sia paragonabile all’indimenticabile Calpurnia Hartwell di Nine Rules to Break When Romancing a Rake (altro delizioso romanzo della MacClean che spero arrivi presto in Italia), quest’autrice è comunque riuscita a caratterizzarlo bene quasi quanto il protagonista maschile. Non capita spesso, ma devo ammettere che Sarah MacLean possiede un talento raro nel tratteggiare con uguale abilità entrambi i personaggi, in modo da creare un equilibrio quasi perfetto all’interno dei suoi romance.
Trama: A decade ago, the Marquess of Bourne was cast from society with nothing but his title. Now a partner in London’s most exclusive gaming hell, the cold, ruthless Bourne will do whatever it takes to regain his inheritance—including marrying perfect, proper Lady Penelope Marbury.
A broken engagement and years of disappointing courtships have left Penelope with little interest in a quiet, comfortable marriage, and a longing for something more. How lucky that her new husband has access to such unexplored pleasures.
Bourne may be a prince of London’s underworld, but he vows to keep Penelope untouched by its wickedness—a challenge indeed as the lady discovers her own desires, and her willingness to wager anything for them… even her heart.
Per quanto brava, tuttavia, la MacClean dovrà scontrarsi con altre autrici dalle notevoli e indiscusse capacità. Due, in particolare, sono assolutamente da non sottovalutare. La prima è Pamela Clare con Defiant, il terzo volume della MacKinnon’s Rangers Series. Non ho ancora letto questo romance dall’ambientazione inusuale (le Colonie Americane della fine del Settecento), ma a giudicare dagli altissimi rating espressi dalle lettrici d’oltreoceano, dovrò rimediare il prima possibile. Del resto, Pamela Clare ha firmato anche uno dei più bei romantic suspense che abbia mai letto, Breaking Point. Ecco spiegato perché Defiant è balzato all’improvviso fra le prime voci nella lista dei miei prossimi acquisti. Lista già terribilmente lunga, ahimè!
MacKinnon’s Rangers
Major Connor MacKinnon despises his commander, Lord William Wentworth, beyond all other men. Ordered to rescue Wentworth’s niece after the Shawnee take her captive, he expects Lady Sarah Woodville to be every bit as arrogant and contemptible as her uncle. Dopo gli scozzesi della Clare, come non citare i favolosi guerrieri di Monica McCarthy? The Recruit è il sesto volume dell’Highland Guard Series e, se si pone sulla stessa linea dei precedenti, sarà davvero un romance da non lasciarsi scappare!

Una menzione particolare merita Beauty and the Bounty Hunter di Lori Austin, primo della serie Once Upon a Time in West. È un libro che ho attualmente in lettura e, nonostante non ami più di tanto i romance dall’ambientazione Western, devo proprio confessare di trovarlo molto interessante. Un punto a suo favore? Cominciamo dal nome del protagonista: Alexi Romanov. Più hot di così!

He’s difficult to trust, and even more difficult to resist, but he has news she can’t ignore. The man she’s after has placed a bounty on her head. Romance Novella Finalists
In questa categoria, che prende in considerazione romance brevi di circa cento pagine, emergono prepotentemente due racconti.
Il primo, intitolato The Duchess of Love, si configura come un vero e proprio prequel dell’omonima serie firmata Sally MacKenzie. In Bedding Lord Ned, volume che inaugura la saga (e che contiene come bonus il racconto finalista) ci viene presentata la Duchessa di Greycliffe, instancabile combinatrice di matrimoni e madre del protagonista.
La “duchess of love”, cui si riferisce il titolo, altri non è che lei.
La trama del racconto si sviluppa attorno ad un big misunderstanding piuttosto classico fra i due protagonisti. Di norma, questo tipo di espediente è un’arma a doppio taglio: se gestito con poca accortezza può, infatti, rivelarsi fastidioso. In questo caso, però, data la brevità della storia e lo stile brioso della MacKenzie, l’espediente non solo funziona ma convince. È un racconto che bilancia alla perfezione humour e sentimento, alternando momenti d’ilarità ad altri più commoventi. Diversamente da quanto si può credere, è consigliato leggerlo dopo e non prima la vicenda narrata in Bedding Lord Ned, in modo da apprezzare appieno la figura di Venus.
Andrew Valentine, Duke of Greycliffe, never thought arriving at his own household a week early would cause so much trouble. The housekeeper thinks he’s his own cousin. Actually, the chance to not be the duke for a while is a pleasant opportunity indeed. It might even help him interrogate the delectable little nymph he’s discovered swimming in his pond—if he can manage to get a word in edgewise…
Eloisa James non è certo un nome da tralasciare quando c’è di mezzo il romance e, infatti, Seduced by a Pirate mostra di meritare tutta l’attenzione che un romanzo in piena regola di solito richiede. Il racconto fa parte della Fairy Tales Series, saga basata su una sorta di rivisitazione in chiave historical romance delle più famose fiabe della tradizione e si colloca fra il quarto e il quinto romanzo. Protagonista è Sir Griffin Barry, cugino di James Ryburn (l’eroe di The Ugly Duchess), pirata ma anche marito piuttosto, ehm… assente! Sposato appena diciasettenne con la bella Phoebe (che lui chiama Poppy per errore) di soli tre anni più grande, Griffin, dopo essere scappato durante la sua stessa notte di nozze (per motivi alquanto divertenti ma assolutamente teneri) sarà costretto da una serie di circostanze diverse a mancare da casa per ben quattordici anni. Quando tornerà si ritroverà ad affrontare una donna testarda e dal piglio deciso. Esilarante la scena durante la quale scopre il vero nome della moglie ma il romanticismo del racconto trasuda fin dalle prime pagine.
In una sola parola? Adorabile.
N.B: Il primo volume della serie, A Kiss at Midnight, è stato da poco pubblicato in Italia con il titolo de Il Bacio della Mezzanotte – I Romanzi Mondadori 1030 -; mentre il secondo, When Beauty Tamed the Beast, è previsto in uscita a maggio col titolo La Resa di Piers.

Per adesso è tutto, ma non credete sia finita. Il prossimo appuntamento sarà dedicato ai romanzi in gara nelle altre categorie e, per quanto riguarda una di queste in particolare, non potrò che versare fiumi d’inchiostro. Come non parlare ampiamente, infatti, del romantic suspense quando questo genere sta infine riscuotendo un certo successo anche sulle italiche sponde?
