su pinterest si trovano tante di quelle idee belle, che siano da cucire, da cucinare, da recuperare o da fare con i bambini. quando si annoia mia figlia, ci mettiamo a guardare il mio board di idee per i bimbi e scegliamo qualcosa da fare insieme. ma questa volta, si trattava che incuriosiva più a me che a lei: oobleck.
there is no end to interesting ideas on pinterest, whether they be to sew, to cook, to upcycle or to do with kidlets. when my daughter gets bored, we look at my board of ideas for kids together and choose something to do. but this time, is was something that i was more interested in than she: oobleck.

non sono scienziata e non capisco bene queste cose, ma si tratta di una sospensione di amidi con il risultato di una roba che non è nè solida nè liquida. o è entrambi allo stesso tempo. è un po' difficile da spiegare. il nome oobleck viene da un libro dal meraviglioso di dr. seuss (lo scrittore più amato dei bimbi statiunitensi). lasciata così nel contenitore, sembra liquida. se si cerca di immergere un dito o un cucchiaio, si trova resistenza. facendo dall'angolo giusto, si riesce a penetrarla e prenderla in mano. si può formare una pallina con le mani, ma il momento che non si muove più l'oobleck, comincia a sciogliere fra le dita. formata una pallina, si può anche buttare nell'aria, e perde la forma sferica, ma rimane intatto. non è piaciuta tantissimo questa roba a mia figlia (e non l'ho fatta toccare affatto dal piccolo perché avrebbe solo combinato un disastro), ma io ci ho giocato un sacco di tempo. non potevo fare le foto perché non si può fermare un attimo con la roba in mano, se no si scioglie. è davvero affascinante.
i'm no scientist and i don't really understand these things, but it's a suspension of starch resulting in this stuff that isn't solid nor liquid. or it's both at the same time. it's kind of hard to explain. the name oobleck comes from dr. seuss's book. if you leave it in a container, it seems liquid. if you try to stick in your finger or a spoon, it' hard. if you do it at the right angle, you can penetrate it and pick some up in your hand. you can roll a ball in your hands, but the moment you stop moving it around, it starts oozing through your fingers. when you have it rolled into a ball you can throw it up in the air and it changes shape, but stays intact. my daughter wasn't particularly interested in this stuff (and i didn't let my little guy touch it because he would've only made a huge mess), but i played with it for quite a while. i couldn't take pictures because you can't keep it still in your hands for even a moment, or else it melts. it's really fascinating.

ho usato questa ricetta ed ero talmente concentrata a fare le foto di mia figlia che lo faceva che non mi ero resa conto che c'era troppa, troppa acqua! infatti, si vede nella foto sotto che è troppo liquido. ci vorrebbe più o meno la metà dell'acqua segnalato qui.
i used this recipe and i was so intent on taking pictures of my daughter mixing it up that i didn't realize that there was way too much water! you can see in the image below that it's too liquidy. you need about half the water in this recipe.

dopo ho trovato queste istruzioni, che mi sembrano più corrette. praticamente, ad un bicchiere di amido di mais (maizena) si aggiunge circa mezzo bicchiere di acqua. secondo me è meglio aggiungere l'acqua un po' alla volta, sempre mescolando, fin quando non arriva ad una consistenza davvero particolare. si può anche aggiungere colori alimentari per creare un colore ancora più particolare/divertente. (mia figlia ha fatto un po' di sperimentazioni, mescolando i colori per vedere quali ne uscivano.)
after i found these instructions, which seem more correct. basically you add about half a cup of water to a cup of corn starch. i think it's best to add the water a little bit at a time, constantly mixing, until you get to a very peculiar consistency. you can also add food coloring to make it even more peculiar/fun. (my daughter did some experimenting, mixing up colors to see what other colors they would make.)

per fortuna ho scoperto che, se si lascia un po' di tempo, si separano l'amido e l'acqua e si può togliere l'acqua in eccesso con un mestolo. facendo così, sono riuscita ad arrivare ad una consistenza buona, come nella prima foto. ma lasciandola per troppo tempo, si evapora l'acqua e si secca (sotto). comunque, è uno sperimento molto interessante da provare con i bimbi (o con gli adulti!) e se sei minimamente bravo con la fisica (o la chimica? io ovviamente non lo sono!), potresti anche fare una lezione divertente.
luckily i realized that, if you leave it for a while, the starch and water separate and you can take out the excess water with a ladle. i was therefore able to get a good consistency, as you can see in the first photo. but if you leave it too long, the water evaporates and it dries out (see below). in any case, it's a very interesting experiment to try out with kids (or grown ups!) and if you're at all physics-inclined (or chemistry? i'm obviously not either!), you could make a nice lesson out of it.
