Sono molto contenta oggi di presentarvi una bellissima antologia fantasy, di un gruppo di scrittori americani dai caratteri diversi ma eterogenei. Anche se come sapete il fantasy non è il mio primo amore sono sempre pronta a promuovere storie dai colori diversi e aiutare chi ne ha bisogno.
Il caso di oggi si intitola “Beyond the Pale”:

Beyond the Pale è un’antologia di storie fantasy, urban fantasy e paranormali che naviga sul confine tra il nostro mondo e gli altri. È la mia immaginazione o ho sentito qualcosa sotto il letto? Era un movimento nel mio armadio scuro? C’è solo un velo sottile a separare il vero dal fantastico, e gli abitanti di queste storie. Il nome “pale” (palo) si riferisce ad un colpo (come quello che impala i vampiri) o ad un pezzo di legno appuntito (cole il palo di un recinto). “Pale” si riferisce anche all’area racchiusa sa un cancello. Ha anche acquisito il significato figurato di dominio recintato e quindi sicuro. Nel linguaggio colloquiale “beyond the pale” significa strano, inaccettabilie o minaccioso. State per andare Beyond the Pale.

Once there was a village on an island that belonged to the Shark God. Every man in the village was a fisherman, and the women cooked their catch and mended their nets and sails, and painted their little boats. And because that island was sacred to him, the Shark God saw to it that there were always fish to be caught, and seals as well, in the waters beyond the coral reef, and protected the village from the great gray typhoons that came every year to flood other lagoons and blow down the trees and the huts of other islands. Therefore the children of the village grew fat and strong, and the women were beautiful and strong, and the fishermen were strong and high-hearted even when they were old.
In return for his benevolence the Shark God asked little from his people: only tribute of a single goat at the turn of each year. To the accompaniment of music and prayers, and with a wreath of plaited fresh flowers around its neck, it would be tethered in the lagoon at moonrise. Morning would find it gone, flower petals floating on the water, and the Shark God never seen—never inthatform, anyway.
