Like every good lover world of Disney and Disney - Pixar world (and using the word "lover" I mean I know entire scenes, time, voices etc. by heart; I know every character and detail and I know the songs of all films; I've been in Disneyland Paris 12 thousand times and when I was a child I saw Snow White almost more than I have seen my mother ... - and my mum has been always there for us!) last wednesday I was in Milan at the PAC (pavilion of Contemporary Art) for the exhibition celebrating 25 years of Pixar.OVVIAMENTE mi sono presentata armata di reflex, convinta di poter ritrarre Russer, Woody, Nemo e Wall-e da tutte le angolazioni... ma! Era vietato fare fotografie ;( . Quindi, ciò che vi posso proporre qui sono solo le foto presenti sulla pagina Fb della mostra (che trovate CLICCANDO QUI), i miei souvenir e l'unica foto permessa: quella con Mike Vasovski e Sully di Monster&Co.
OF COURSE I went there armed with my camera, and I was convinced that I could portray Russer, Woody, Nemo and Wall-e from all angles ... But! It was forbidden to take photographs ;(. Le male lingue lamentavano il fatto che ci fossero solo bozzetti che ritraevano i personaggi e poco altro - si aspettavano qualcosa di più interattivo. Chi ne era uscito entusiasta lo era per aver imparato qualcosa dei retroscena del mondo Pixar e di come da un'idea si realizzi un film d'animazione geniale sotto tutti i punti di vista.
Io sono andata curiosa e felice di di poter alimentare la mia mania per la Disney. Ma non avevo la pretesa o l'aspettativa di vedere chissà cosa. C'è da dire che l'idea di vedere anche solo "qualche bozzetto" non mi faceva affatto schifo, siccome io amo molto il disegno e mi sono anche per un breve tempo della mia vita dilettata con il disegno fumettistico.
I had heard good and bad opinions about the exhibition. Dissatisfied people complained that there were only sketches depicting the characters and nothing else - they expected something more interactive. Who came out so happy instead, was excited by having learned something about the backstage of Pixar world and about how an idea can be realized in an animated and brilliant film from all points of view.
I went there curious and happy to be able to feed my obsession with Disney. But I did not have the pretension or the expectation of seeing something exceptional. It must be said that the idea of seeing just "some sketches" was ok for me at all, since I really love drawing and I even for a short time of my life dabbled with drawing comics.

Sia io che Maria Vittoria, l'amica che mi ha accompagnato (grande appassionata anche lei ;) ), ne siamo uscite decisamente soddisfatte. Il percorso è molto ben allestito, suddiviso per film (si inizia con Toy Story e si procede fino a qualche disegno riguardante Brave, il film in uscita), con spiegazioni riguardanti la storia della Pixar e la produzione di un film a partire da zero.
C'è tutto un percorso che mostra la nascita di un personaggio, prendendo come esempio Lotso, l'orso malvagio di Toy Story 3.Mi hanno molto affascinato i modellini di argilla che vengono fatti prima di riprodurre il personaggio in computer grafica, così da poterlo osservare da tutte le angolazioni. Gli scultori devono essere dei geni!
Maria Vittoria, the friend who accompanied me (a huge fantoo;)), and I, were very satisfied when we came out from the show. The set is very well designed, divided by films (starting with Toy Story and proceed up to a few drawings about Brave, the upcoming movie), with explanations about the history of Pixar and about the procedure to product a movie from scratch.
There is a part of the exhibition that shows the birth of a character, taking as an example Lotso, the bad bear from Toy Story 3.
I was very impressed by the models that are made of clay before playing the character in computer graphics, so that you can observe it from all angles. The sculptors must be genius!

Abbiamo anche origliato da una guida qualche curiosità: per prima cosa la figura umana è stata la cosa più difficile da riprodurre. Il primo corto che ritraeva un bambino era davvero stranissimo! Il bimbo sembrava un bambolotto inquietante :/ ...
The part dedicated to short films is really cute - I find them fantastic! All movies were shown one by one on some big screens. We also overheard to some curiosity from a guide: the human figure had been the hardest thing to play. The first short film that portrayed a baby was really weird! The baby looked like a scary doll ... :/

Tra le cose più affascinanti c'era lo zootropio. Si tratta di una stanza buia in cui un meccanismo fa girare una grande "giostra" - che in questo caso ritraeva i personaggi di Toy Story. E' come un grande cerchio roteante sul quale sono poste varie statuine in posizioni leggermente differenti così da formare, in serie, un movimento. La base inizia a girare velocissima, così veloce che le statuine diventano indiscernibili. A quel punto viene attivata una particolare luce ad intermittenza che crea un effetto ottico incredibile: è come se la base si fermasse e le statuine si animassero! Esattamente come nel film d'animazione si vedeva Jessie ballare col lazzo, i soldati militari lanciarsi coi paracaduti, Woody cavalcare Bonsai e gli alieni verdi del PizzaPlanet lanciarsi in un buco che si andava a creare sul momento. Una vera magia!
Among the most fascinating things was the zoetrope. It is a dark room in which a mechanism turns a large "carousel" - that in this case portrayed the characters of Toy Story. It's like a big spinning circle on which are placed various statues in slightly different positions so as to form a movement. The base starts to spin very fast, so fast that the figures become indiscernible. Then, a special light is activated to blink an optical effect that creates the incredible: it is as if the base had stopped and the figurines'd become animated! Just like in the animated film you can see Jessie dancing with the joke, military soldiers launching with parachutes, Woody riding Bonsai and green aliens from PizzaPlanet launching into a hole that was created on the fly. A real charm!

Io avevo fretta di prendere il treno di ritorno per Vercelli e così non abbiamo fatto in tempo a vedere il video delle interviste / backstage e uno d'animazione tratta dagli storyboard (e mi hanno detto che sono fantastici)!In ogni caso, la mostra è superconsigliata agli appassionati. Vedere tutti i vari prototipi di beccaccini e gli schizzi per ogni scena poi trasformata in grafica 3D a me ha fatto impazzire!
In più il bookshop (ve l'ho detto: ho una malattia per i bookshop) è piccolo ma molto carino (anche se caro economicamente). Ne sono uscita con: spilla di Russell, tazza di Buzz da regalare (non pensiate si tratti di una tazza qualsiasi: conoscevo già la forma ed è fantastica per i tè-dipendenti! Infatti è capientissima, ma con il bordo stretto: perfetto per appoggiarci il filtro del tè! A differenza di altre tazze capienti e troppo larghe!) e mia sorella (sapendo che io sono sempre squattrinata :D ) mi ha regalato un quadernetto con Mike Vasovski ;) e per sé l'ha preso con Wall-e e Eva. (Slinky e Mr.Potato facevano già parte della mia collezione ;) )
I hurry to catch the train back to Vercelli, and so we have not had time to watch the video of the interviews / backstage and an animation movie created from storyboards (and I have heard that they are fantastic)!
Anyway, I super recommend the exhibition. Being able to see all various prototypes of snipe and all sketches for each scene then converted into 3D graphics has made me crazy!
In addition, the bookshop (I told you: I have an addiction for bookshop) is small but very nice (although expensive). I came out with: a pin with Russell on, a Buzz cup for a gift (do not think this is a cup like any other: I already knew the shape and is great for tea addicts! It's very very very capacious, but with the narrow edge, perfect for lean tea filter! Unlike other capacious cups that has a too large edge!) and my sister (knowing that I'm always penniless :D) gave me a notepad with Mike Vasovski ;) and she bought to herself the one with Wall-e and Eve. (Slinky and Mr.Potato were already part of my collection;)).

period: february 2012Eccezionale era un librone cartonato dedicato al mondo Pixar (ancor meglio del catalogo della mostra). Spero sinceramente di poterlo trovare più avanti in qualche Libraccio di Milano (la STREPITOSA catena di librerie di libri usati e non, in cui è spesso facile trovare cataloghi di mostre e altri volumi interessanti a prezzi stracciati).L'ultima volta che sono stata ad una mostra, alla Triennale di Milano ("Pelle di Donna" - carina, ma niente di che...), il Libraccio di zona Navigli aveva già il catalogo: a 10€ anziché 35€.
E voi? Avete visitato la mostra per i 25 anni della Pixar? So che la mostra era stata anni fa al MoMA di NYC per un altro anniversario. Forse qualcuno l'aveva vista in quell'occasione? Ora comunque inizierà un tour europeo, quindi non è un post dedicato solo agli italiani - la consiglio a tutti.L'ingresso è sui 7 € ed è ridotto a 5.50 € per gli studenti con meno di 26 anni. Aperta fino al 14 febbraio!! Non essendo un'amante dei programmi melensi per San Valentino, non posso consigliarvi niente di meglio che un giro a questa mostra per il giorno degli innamorati :) !!
The hardcover big book dedicated to Pixar was outstanding (even better than the exhibition catalog). I sincerely hope to find it later in some Libraccio in Milan (the AMAZING franchising of used books and libraries, where it is often easy to find exhibition catalogs and other interesting books at bargain prices).
The last time I went to an exhibition at the Triennale di Milano ("Pelle di Donna" - cute, but not exceptional ...), the Libraccio Navigli zone was having already the catalog: for 10 € instead of 35 €.
And what about you? Have you visited the 25th years of Pixar celebrating exhibition? I know that it was at the MoMA in NYC, some years ago for another anniversary. Maybe somebody had seen it on that occasion? Now, however, a European tour will begin, so this is not a post dedicated only to the Italians - I recommend it to everyone.The entrance is about 7 € and is reduced to 5.50 € for students under 26 years. It is open until February 14th! I'm not a lover of dull programs for Valentine's Day, so I can recommend nothing better than a trip to this show for Valentine's Day :)!
