A devil in the details

The Brazilian doll artist known as Vittoria Porto has a diabolic hand for embellishing her dolls in a flabbergasting manner. And I’m not interested here in reviewing them as examples of an exuberant, colourful, sambastic or fantasy style, which is what everybody can see and realize for themselves on the blog or at her doll exhibitions. I’d rather like to draw you attention on the materials as coral or amber she generously uses, and most of all on the patterns of her fully embroidered and encrusted outfits - the way those tiny beads are sewn on the fabric to make swirls and rows and frills. With the artist’s permission one should always look under the doll’s skirt to check the reverse of the work: proudly perfect.

L’artista brasiliana nota col nome di Vittoria Porto ha una mano diabolica per ornare le sue bambole in maniera sbalorditiva. Qui non m’interessa recensirle come esempi dello stile esuberante, variopinto, sambastico o fantasy, che è ciò che tutti vedono e colgono da soli sul suo blog o alle sue mostre. Voglio piuttosto attirare la vostra attenzione sui materiali come corallo e ambra che usa con generosità, e più di tutto sui motivi dei suoi abiti tutti ricamati e incrostati, il modo in cui quelle minuscole perline sono cucite sulla sfoffa per formare vortici e file e balze. Col permesso dell’artista, si dovrebbe sempre guardare sotto la gonna della bambola controllare il rovescio del lavoro: orgogliosamente perfetto.
