Thessaloniki: a city in transition, 1912-2012
On the occasion of 100 years since the liberation of Thessaloniki at the height of the festivities, the Municipality of Thessaloniki andthe body ‘Thessaloniki 2012‘ organized the international scientific conference “Thessaloniki: a city in transition, 1912 – 2012 ‘. The conference will take place from 18 to 21 October 2012 at the Conference and Scientific Centre of Thessaloniki Concert Hall (hall ‘Emil Riadis’). The conference aims to be a meeting point of modern historiographical currents and all relevant social sciences, such as history, social anthropology, economics, law, international relations and the arts.
Among the participants: Edhem Eldem (Bogazici University), Khaled Fahmy (New York University), Eyal Ginio (Hebrew University of Jerusalem), Charles King (Georgetown University), Kitromilidis Paschalis (University of Athens), Yura Konstantinova (Bulgarian Academy of Sciences), Nora Lafi (Zentrum Moderner Orient).
The opening of the conference, which will take place on Thursday 18/10 at 19.00, will be opened by Mayor of Thessaloniki John Boutari, while the opening speeches will give the Mark Mazower (Columbia University) and Constantine Svolopoulos (Athens Academy).
The conference will revolve around three themes:
Friday 19/10/2012, 09.15-21.00: ‘Searching for Identity’
Saturday 20/10/2012, 09.30-21.00: ‘A City in Transition’
Sunday 21/10/2012, 09.15-21.30: ‘Mapping the future of Thessaloniki’
