alla corte del sultano del Brunei!!

Ore 6:30 della mattina: da Kuala Lumpur prendiamo finalmente l’aereo per il Brunei, destinazione Bandaar Seri Began, la capitale.

6:30 am we finally flew from Kuala Lumpur to Brunei, destination Bandaar Seri Began, the capital.

Il Brunei è un piccolo sultanato che si trova sull’isola del Borneo, nel sud-est asiatico, confina con la Malesia e si affaccia sul Mar Cinese Meridionale.

Di religione islamica, è uno degli stati più ricchi al mondo per via delle giacenze petrolifere di cui è pieno.

Dall’aeroporto scegliamo un bus locale che con 1$ del Brunei ci porta al centro della città (considerate che il bus ci impiegherà quasi un’oretta perchè si ferma praticamente ovunque a seconda delle richieste dei passeggeri, senza seguire un tragitto sensato).

The Brunei is a small sultanate located on the island of Borneo, in Southeast Asia, bordered by Malaysia and faces the South China Sea.

Muslim country, is one of the richest in the world because of oil fields.

We chose a local bus which, with $ 1 Brunei, brings us to the city center (consider that the journey is about one hour because the bus stops almost everywhere depending on the needs of passengers, without following a way).

Fortunatamente troviamo subito un ostello alla buona che fa per noi: KH Soon Resthouse, assolutamente niente di che, offre sistemazioni in camerate o camere doppie con bagno privato. Noi abbiamo scelto la seconda opzione, pagando 45 $ in due a notte!! L’unico vantaggio è che si trova a due minuti a piedi dalla Moschea e dal centro.

Dopo una doccia ed un rapido pranzo, partiamo alla scoperta della città che, ad un primo sguardo, ci appare vuota, super calda e quanto mai assolata.

Considerate che siamo nel pieno del Ramadan, sono le ore più calde della giornata e il fatto che la città sia vuota è più che giustificato. Gli spazi, immensi, concedono pochissime zone d’ombra…uscire è davvero impegnativo!!

Al calar del tramonto, scopriremo un’atmosfera completamente diversa, soprattutto all’interno dei mall.

Prima tappa: la Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque, emblema della città, costruita nel 1958 per volere del 28° sultano.

Fortunately we found quickly an hostel: the KH Soon Resthouse which offers accommodation in rooms or double rooms with private bathroom. We chose the second option, paying $ 45 for night! The only advantage was that it was a two minute walk from the Mosque and the center.

After a shower and a quick lunch, we started to explore the city that, at first glance, will appear blank, super hot and very sunny.

We were in the middle of Ramadan, we went out during the hottest hours of the day and the fact that the city was empty was more than justified.

After the sunset, we found a completely different atmosphere, especially within the malls.

First stop: the Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque, the emblem of the city, built in 1958 at the behest of the 28th sultan.

Si trova nel cuore di Bandaar, al centro di un laghetto artificiale in cui si trova anche un barcone. Il suo minareto, alto 44 m è la costruzione più alta del Paese, guai a superarla.

It is located in the heart of Bandaar in the middle of an artificial lake where there is also a boat. Its minaret, 44 m high, is the tallest building in the country, woe to overcome it.

E’ veramente molto bella e suggestiva, visitatela anche di notte…acquista un fascino incredibile.

Purtroppo per via del Ramadan non siamo potute entrare (l’acceso era negato ai non musulmani per tutto il mese).

It is really nice and charming, during the night, it buys an amazing charm.

Unfortunately, because of Ramadan we are not able to enter (the access was denied to non-Muslims throughout the month).

Per accedere alla moschea, attraversate il Taman Omar Ali Saifuddien, il principale stadio utilizzato per le celebrazioni della festa nazionale e per il compleanno del sultano.

To access the mosque, you have to cross the Taman Omar Ali Saifuddien, the main stadium used for the celebration of the national holiday and for the birthday of the sultan.

Poco distante dall’ingresso dello stadio, fate caso al Tugu Clock dal quale vengono calcolate tutte le distanze del Brunei.

Not far from the stadium, you can notice the Tugu Clock from which all distances are calculated in Brunei.

Tutta l’area circostante la moschea è cosparsa di mall e di banche. Il più famoso è il Yayasan Shopping Mall, la cui struttura rispecchia perfettamente la tradizionale architettura del Brunei.

Bandaar Seri Began, eccetto questa esaltazione quasi eccessiva della figura del sultano, si presenta come una città più che modesta, discreta, non ostentando la sua ricchezza con edifici lussuosi e pacchiani.

Assolutamente da non perdere è un giro in barca al Kampung Ayer, il più grande villaggio sull’acqua al mondo.

The whole area surrounding the mosque is covered with malls and banks. The most famous is the Yayasan Shopping Mall, the structure of which perfectly reflects the traditional architecture of Brunei.

Bandaar Seri Began, except this almost excessive exaltation of the figure of the sultan, looks like a city more than modest, discreet which not flaunts his wealth with luxurious buildings and tacky.

Not to be missed is a boat ride to Kampung Ayer, the largest water village in the world.

E’ costituito da 28 villaggi sull’acqua che si sviluppano su entrambe le rive del Sungai Brunei. Questo rappresenta circa il 10% della popolazione del paese.

It consists of 28 water villages that grow on both banks of the Sungai Brunei. This represents approximately 10% of the country’s population.

Considerate che si compone di circa 20.000 abitanti, 29.140 metri di passerelle, più di 4200 strutture tra cui case, moschee, ristoranti, negozi, scuole e un ospedale.

Fatevi portare con una barchina, contrattando prima sul prezzo. Ne vale assolutamente la pena..il villaggio costituisce la vera essenza del posto.

Consider that consists of about 20,000 people, 29,140 meters of bridges, more than 4200 structures including homes, mosques, restaurants, shops, schools and a hospital.

Go there by a small boat, negotiating on the price first. The village is the very essence of the Brunei.

La barchina ci lascia lungo il fiume così decidiamo di approfittarne per fare un giro al mercato che anima una delle due sponde.

The small boat  left  us along the river, so we decide to take a trip to the market situated on one of the two banks of the river.

La nostra scoperta del Brunei continua… prossima tappa il Jerundong Park Playground e l’Empire Hotel & Country Club, i capricci più emblematici del sultano!

Per raggiungerli prendiamo un taxi che con 50$ ci porta a destinazione.

Il parco divertimenti, pensate, è stato un regalo di compleanno! Oggi giace tuttavia in uno stato di semi abbandono, gran parte delle attrazioni sono state vendute ad altri parchi.

To achieve them, we took a taxi or $ 50 which brings us to the destination.

Interamente costruito con pregiato marmo italiano, l’Empire Hotel & Country Club è un immenso complesso d’oro situato nel cuore della foresta pluviale..

Commissionato dal principe Jefri come struttura per ospitare gli ospiti della famiglia reale, il costo per la sua realizzazione fu circa di 1,1 miliardo di dollari americani.

La proprietà è stata rapidamente convertita in resort di lusso per tentare di recuperare i soldi spesi.

Commissioned by Prince Jefri as a structure to accommodate guests of the royal family, the cost of its implementation was approximately 1.1 billion U.S. dollars.

Lungo la strada del ritorno, direzione Gadong, a circa 2 km a nord-ovest del centro cittadino, il tassista si ferma davanti alla Jame’Asr Hassanil Bolkiah Mosque che ci lascia a bocca aperta.

On the way back, towards Gadong, about 2 km north-west of the city center, the driver stops at Jame’Asr Hassanil Bolkiah Mosque which leaves us open-mouthed.

Si tratta della moschea più grande del paese, costruita nel 1992 in occasione del 25°anniversario del regno dell’attuale sultano.

It is the largest mosque in the country, built in 1992 for the 25th anniversary of the reign of the Sultan. 

Era l’ora del tramonto … il risultato affascinante! anche qui purtroppo non siamo potute entrare per via del Ramadan.

There was the sunset and the result? fascinating!  Unfortunately, we were not able to enter because of Ramadan.
