anti-ikea

va be', non sono contro ikea, ma a volte non ce la faccio proprio a comprare qualcosa, per quanto possa costare poco, se la posso fare io (come il cuscino poggiatesta a forma di gatto). è successo un giorno un anno fa (sì, sono un po' indietro con alcuni post...) con questo piccolo peluche di serpentino di ikea che voleva mia figlia. un genitore normale avrebbe detto, "bene, costa solo 50 centesimi, ce la possiamo permettere e così evitiamo la crisi isterica in mezzo al negozio." ma sappiamo già che non sono normalissima. quindi siamo tornati a casa, ha scelto un pezzo di velluto di bambù verde (ottima scelta!) avanzato della produzione di assorbenti lavabili, e ci siamo messi a lavoro. ed ecco il simpaticone che ne è uscito. la lingua sono dei fili da ricamo intrecciati e poi annodati alla fine. a noi piace un sacco ed è morbidissimo, anche se mi chiedo se valeva la pena quando c'era l'alternativa per solo 50 centesimi. ma alla fine direi di sì, perché il fatto a mano batte SEMPRE (quasi) l'industriale. giusto? giusto!
ok, so i'm not really against ikea, but sometimes i just can't stand buying something, no matter how inexpensive it may be, if i can make it myself (like my cat neck pillow). it happened one day about a year ago (yes, i am a bit behind with some posts...) with this little stuffed snake that my daughter wanted at ikea. any normal parent would've said, "ok, it only costs 50 cents, we can afford it and that way we can avoid an ugly scene in the middle of the store." but we already know that i'm not the apex of normalcy. so we went back home, she picked out a piece of green bamboo velour (good choice!) left over from some cloth pads, and we got to work. and this is the little guy that resulted. the tongue are some strands of embroidery thread braided and knotted at hte end. we like him a lot and he's really soft, even if i still wondered it it was worth it when the alternative only cost 50 cents. but in the end i'd say it was because handmade ALWAYS (almost) beats industrial. right? right!

passa circa un mese. non ne posso più del pollice che risiede quasi sempre in bocca di mia figlia. continua a avere problemi con le afte e con la socializzazione. ma ne sente il bisogno quando è stanca, triste o stressata. entra in campo un accordo fra noi due. propongo: ti faccio un peluche speciale molto morbido esattamente come vuoi tu e te la puoi portare a presso, anche nella tasca del grembiule a scuola. così, quando sei triste, lo puoi prendere e strofinare e coccolare come vuoi invece di mettere il dito in bocca. lei: d'accordo! voglio una lumaca! (ed eccola qui con un cappellino che ha fatto lei.)
about a month goes by. i cannot take anymore of that thumb that's taken up residence in my daughter's mouth. she keeps on having problems with canker sores and socializing. but she feels she needs it when she's tired, sad or stressed. enter stage right (or left) an agreement between us. i propose: i'll make you a special super soft stuffed toy exactly as you want it and you can carry it around, even in your smock at school. that way, when you're tired, you can take it out, rub it and cuddle it however you want instead of sucking your thumb. she responds: ok! i want a snail! (and here it is with a little hat she made it.)

ha scelto altri colori sempre del velluto di bambù (è talmente soffice che è perfetto per i peluche!).
she chose other colors again from bamboo velour (it's so soft, it's perfect for stuffed animals!).

mentre lavoravo, l'ho messa a lavoro imbottendo un cuscino (il pezzo che ho dovuto togliere da questo copripiumino peanuts che ho fatto due anni fa).
while i worked, i put her to work, too, stuffing a pillow (the piece i had to take off from this peanuts duvet cover that i made two years ago).

per prima ho fatto una corda di stoffa, tenendo i bordi irregolari all'interno. volevo un po' di volume, quindi non ho tagliato i bordi, ho solo arrottolato tutto.
first i made a fabric rope, placing the irregular edges inside. i wanted it to be puffy, so i didn't cut the edges, just rolled everything up.

eccolo finito, cucito a mano.

ho pensato di poter evitare di cucire il guscio semplicemente facendo una serie di nodi al tubo, ma non mi sono trovata bene.
i thought i could avoid sewing the shell just by knotting up the tube, but i wasn't happy with the result.

alla fine, ho semplicemente fatto uno spirale, sempre cucendolo a mano.
in the end, i just made a spiral and again hand sewed it.

per le antenna, ho piegato un pezzetto di velluto a metà e ho cucito delle formine lunghe. le ho tagliate e le ho rigirate.
for the antennae, i folded a scrap of velour in half and sewed some long shapes. i cut them out and turned them the right way out.

a questo punto si era fatto un po' tardi (perciò la luce schifosa qui). ora il corpo. ho fatto come il serpentino. ho piegato un pezzo lungo a metà e ho cucito la forma, facendo più rotonda per la testa e più appuntita alla fine. ma ho anche inserito le antenna verso l'interno della testa con solo le estremità non-cucite fuori. ho lasciato una parte a metà corpo senza cucire per rigirarlo e imbottirlo.
at this point it had gotten a bit late (hence the crapola lighting here). now the body. i did it the same way as with the snake. i folded a long piece in half and sewed the shape, making it rounder at the head and tapered at the end. but i also slipped in the antennae towards the inside with just the non-sewn ends sticking out. i left a space halfway down the body to turn it right-side-out and stuff it.

poi ho piegato il corpo intorno al guscio, cucendoli insieme a mano. sofia ha scelto i colori e come fare il viso, e l'ho ricamato.
then i bend the body around the shell, hand sewing them together. sofia chose the colors and how to do the face, and i embroidered it.

ecco il risultato, battezzato "lumi", pronto per essere infilato nella tasca del grembiule (e con un grembiule suo che gli ha fatto sofia). nonostante la sua espressione poco entusiasta, era molto emozionata per la sua lumaca speciale esattamente come voleva lei. ma, chiedete, il suo scopo di mettere fine al dito in bocca? è servito per circa 10 minuti e poi il pollice è tornato nel suo amato posto in bocca!
and here is the result, baptized "lumi" (short for "lumaca," snail), ready to be slipped into a school smock pocket (and with his own smock that sofia made him). despite her unenthusiastic expression, she was thrilled to have her own snail made exactly the way she wanted. but, you might ask, the goal of putting and end to thumb-sucking? it worked for all of 10 minutes and then the thumb was right back in it's favorite place!
un po' di ironia/ipocrasia: ho intitolato questo post anti-ikea, ma guardate che cosa c'è sullo sfondo della foto sopra? un copripiumino che ho fatto con un tessuto ikea! ve l'avevo DETTO di amare ikea!
