• How did you come up with the concept and the characters for the story? Come sei arrivata a ideare il soggetto e i personaggi della storia?

The idea arrived in a dream. I saw a beautiful boy sitting on the steps of the Panthéon, and I knew I was deeply in love with him. When I woke up, I wrote down everything I’d learned about Étienne St. Clair. He was unusual — his name was French, his accent was English, and he was attending an American boarding school in Paris. What was his story? My novel grew organically from what I knew about him. Anna was much harder to figure out!
L'idea mi è arrivata attraverso un sogno. Ho visto un bellissimo ragazzo seduto sugli scalini del Pantheon, e sapevo già che ero innamorata profondamente di lui. Quando mi sono svegliata, ho scritto tutto quello che sapevo di Étienne St. Clair. Che era insolito – il suo nome era Francese, il suo accento era Inglese, e stava frequentando un college americano a Parigi. Qual era la sua storia? Il mio romanzo ha preso forma organicamente da quello che sapevo su di lui. Anna è stata più difficile da inquadrare.

• What were the challenges of setting your book in another country? Quali sono state le difficoltà di ambientare il tuo libro in un altro paese?

The challenges were huge. It was never my intention to set a book in France, so when I had the idea, I was terrified. I'm an Anglophile, and France made me nervous. I’d never studied the language, and there are so many stereotypes that immediately spring to mind—the French are beautiful, they’re better dressed, they have better food, they’re rude, they hate Americans. Intimidating, right?
Le sfide erano giganti. Non è era mia intenzione ambientare il libro in Francia, così quando mi è venuta l'idea ero spaventata. Sono un'anglofona, e la Francia mi rende nervosa, non ho mai studiato la lingua, e ci sono così tanti stereotipi che immediatamente si affacciano alla mente – i francesi sono bellissimi, sono meglio vestiti, hanno il cibo più buono, sono maleducati, odiano gli americani. Terrificante vero?

• If not, explain then, how you managed to WRITE THAT BOOK. Se la risposta è no, come sei riuscita a scrivere quel libro?

One word: research.
More words: The English part was easy, because I’m a longtime Anglophile. A lot can be absorbed by regular viewings of British programming.
The French part was challenging. I didn’t have the money to travel, so for several years, I read every book about France that I could get my hands on, listened to French music, watched French films, ate French food, took a French language class, etc. I’ve since spent a month in Paris, but it was after ANNA was already in edits. I was so relieved to discover that my extensive research had paid off. Paris was everything I’d expected and hoped it to be. In other words, hurrah for research! And hurrah for Paris!

Più parole: la parte Inglese era semplice, perché sono Anglifona da tanto tempo. Molto si può assorbire appreso vedendo regolarmente i programmi Inglesi.
La parte Francese è stata più difficile. Non avevo i soldi per viaggiare, così per molti anni ho letto tutti i libri sulla Francia su cui potevo posare le mie mani, ascoltavo musica francese, visto film francesi, mangiato cibo francese, frequentato una classe di lingua francese, ecc. Ho trascorso un mese a Parigi, ma è stato quando ANNA era in fase di editing. Sono stata molto contenta nello scoprire che la mia ricerca è stata ripagata. Parigi è stata quello che speravo potesse essere. In altre parole, hurrah per la ricerca! E hurrah per Parigi!

• What's your favorite scene in ANNA? What scene was the hardest to write? Qual è la tua scena preferita in ANNA? Qual è stata a scena più difficile da scrivere?

There were many scenes that were a joy to write. I was fortunate with this novel. (Not so much with my second novel, har har.) My favorite was probably a kissing scene, because I got to *live* it! The hardest bit was the day I had to research something awful that happens during the book. I don't want to spoil it, but for anyone who has already read ANNA, it's the medical issue. The information I needed was the absolute last thing I researched, and I ripped it off like a Band-Aid in one horrible, sad day.
Molte scene sono stati divertenti da scrivere. Sono stata fortunata con questo romanzo. La mia scene preferita probabilmente è una scena con un bacio, perché ho avuto la possibilità di viverla! La più difficile è stato il giorno in cui ho dovuto ricercare qualcosa di terribile che accade nel libro. Non voglio rovinare la sorpresa, ma per chi non ha ancora letto ANNA si tratta di un problema medico. Le informazioni di cui avevo bisogno sono in assoluto l'ultima cosa sui cui ho fatto ricerche e l'ho fatto emergere nel libro come se fosse lo strappo di un cerotto tutto in un orribile giorno triste.

• What parts of ANNA are based on real life? Quali parti di ANNA sono basate su fatti reali?

Everything and nothing. I've never been to boarding school, I've never fallen in (real) love with multicultural boy, and my family situation is very different from Anna's, but every character and every scene (even the yuckier ones) have some aspect of myself in them. In other words, there were so many variables that were NOT me, that I created small places and situations that I could relate to everywhere else, so as to make the story believable, to ground it in some kind of reality that I could grasp onto.
Tutto e niente. Non sono mai stata in una scuola all'estero, non mi sono mai innamorata (davvero) di ragazzi multicultura, e la mia situazione familiare è molto diversa da quella di Anna, ma ogni personaggio e ogni scena (anche le più disgustose) hanno in loro aspetti di me stessa. In altre parole, ci sono molto variabili che non sono mi appartengono, ho creato piccoli posti e situazioni che potevo collegare a qualunque parte, per rendere la storia credibile, per posizionarla in qualche tipo di realtà alla quale aggrapparmi.

• Anna and Étienne have a very grown-up type emotional bond. Do you think it’s unrealistic to portray teenagers have such a mature relationship? Anna ed Etienne hanno un legame emotivo da adulti. Pensi che sia irrealistico descrivere dei ragazzi con una relazione così matura?

Definitely not. And here’s the obligatory personal anecdote: I was Anna’s age when I met my husband. We had a very natural, very easy, but very serious courtship. I was married as a teenager. I realize that our relationship is unusual—and I definitely don’t believe that most high school loves are True Loves—but, yes, absolutely it can happen.
Responsible, mature teens often have responsible, mature relationships. And whether the relationship lasts or not, those emotions, those bonds are as powerful and real as anything forged between adults.
Non credo. E qui arriva l'aneddoto personale: avevo l'età di Anna quando ho incontrato mio marito. Abbiamo avuto una fase di corteggiamento molto naturle, molto semplice ma anche molto seria. Mi sono sposa da ragazza. Capisco che la nostr relazione è inusuale – e non credo proprio che la maggior parte degli amori scolastici sia il vero amore – ma sì, può certamente accadere.
Ragazzi maturi e responsbili hanno spesso relazioni mature e responsabili. E benché la relazioni duri o meno, quelle emozioni, quei legami sono forti e reali quanto qualsiasi formato tra gli adulti.

• How tall is Étienne exactly? Why did you choose to make him short? Quanto è alto Etienne esattamente? Perché hai deciso di renderlo basso?

Now it’s my turn to be evil. You’ll learn his height in A FUTURE BOOK!!! I made him short, because . . . I just knew that he was. It was never a question.
And I love the idea of a hero who isn’t embarrassed or held back by his short stature. Someone who still has an incredible amount of confidence and charisma, someone who is loved by people who don’t judge him for it either. Height is a silly thing to get judgmental about. It’s not like anyone can help it.
Questo è il mio turno di essere cattiva, scoprirete la sua altezza in uno dei libri futuri. L'ho reso basso perché... perché sapevo che era così. Non è mai stato un dilemma.
Amo l'idea di un eroe che non è imbarazzato o bloccato della sua piccola statura. Qualcuno che ha un così grande quantità di confidenza e carisma, qualcuno che è amato da persone che lo giudicano per la sua altezza. L'altezza è una cosa sciocca sulla quale essere critici. Non è una cosa che si può controlllare.

• What did you learn about yourself through your characters? Cosa hai imparato su te stessa attraverso i tuoi personaggi?

Despite the setting, I knew relatively nothing about France or the French when I began. I was VERY intimidated, so I wrote it the only way I could — from the perspective of someone who was also intimidated by Paris! As Anna needed to learn something, I learned it. And as Anna became braver, I became braver, too. Together we discovered that stepping outside of our comfort zone is a GOOD thing. (We also learned that France is awesome.)
Nonostante l'ambientazione, non sapevo quasi nulla della Francia o dei francesi quando ho iniziato. Ero molto spaventata, così ho scritto nell'unico modo in cui potevo – dalla prospettiva di qualcuno che a sua volta era spaventato di Parigi! Quando Anna doveva imparare qualcosa, io l'imparavo! Quando Anna diventava più coraggiosa, sono diventata più coraggiosa anche io. Insieme abbiamo scoperto che uscire dalla nostra bolla di sapone è una cosa buona. (Abbiamo anche imparato che la Francia è stupenda).

• You mention crepes a lot in the book. And macarons. Can you describe a macaron? Also, what do you have against crème brulée!? Why did you not mention it at all in ANNA? Menzioni le crepes molte volte nel libro. E anche i macarons. uoi descriverci un macaron? In più, cosa hai contro le crème brulée? Perché non la menzioni mai in ANNA?

My favorite local eatery is a French restaurant called Bouchon, and my favorite dish is Chef Michel’s quadruple mini-crème brulées—it changes with the season, but it’ll be a sampler of something like: lavender, rosemary, chocolate orange, and espresso. So definitely no hard feelings against the glorious crème brulée!
Il mio locale preferito è un ristorante francese chiamato Bouchon, e il mio piatto preferito è la quadrupla mini-crème brulées dello chef Michel – cambia per ogni stagione, ma ha il sapore di qualcosa come: la lavanda, rosmarino, cioccolato all'arancia, e caffè. Per conclude non ho nessun sentimento d'odio verso la crème brulée!
But . . . macarons. Macarons are special. In America, we think of those bleh coconut thingies, but in France, they’re these GORGEOUS sandwiches cookies made with eggshell-fragile crusts and melt-in-your-mouth fillings. They have these beautiful, bright colors, and they’re so cheerful to look at! And the flavors: Blackcurrant! Rose! Passion fruit! My favorite is fleur d’oranger, orange flower. It tastes like the sun.
Ma i macarons. I Macarons sono speciali. In America, pensiamo a queste cosine al cocco, ma in Francia, ci sono questi sandwiches di biscotto fatti di una crosta croccande e delicata che si sciolgono in bocca. Hanno questi colori bellissimi e luminosi, e sono così divertenti da guardare! E i gusti: ribes, rosa, frutto della passione! Il mio preferito è fleur d'oranger, fiore d'arancia. Ha il sapore del sole.

• San Francisco vs. Paris: The victor? San Francisco vs. Parigi: Il vincitore?

Oh, man! Such an evil question. I love them both and for very different reasons. I suppose, under a gun, I’d pick San Francisco. My husband courted me there, so it’ll always be romantic to me.
Oh, mamma mia! È una domanda cattiva. Le amo entrambe per raggioni molto diverse. Credo, sotto minaccia, che scegliere San Francisco. Mio marito mi ha corteggiato lì, per questo sarà per sempre molto romantica per me.

• Can you share your experiences finding a publisher? What was the process like? Puoi raccontarci la tua esperienza nel trovare un editore?Qual è stato il processo?

You know, I was fortunate here. I have a wonderful agent, Kate Schafer Testerman, and we worked hard to get my manuscript in fighting shape before sending it out. She sent it to two editors. They were both interested, and they both made an offer. I accepted with Julie Strauss-Gabel at Dutton, because . . . well, there’s no editor in the world I’d rather work with. I was lucky, indeed!
Sai, sono stata fortunata. Ho una meravigliosa agente, Kate Schafer Testerman, e abbiamo lavorato duro per rendere il manoscritto in una forma perfetta prima di spedirlo. Lei lo ha mandato a due editori. Erano entrambi interessati, ed entrambi fecero un'offerta. • How different is your finished manuscript from what you originally submitted? Did you have to change a lot? Quanto è diverso il manoscritto finito da quello originale? Hai dovuto cambiare molte cose?

Yes and no. I’ve spent years revising this novel, and it’s been exhilarating and maddening and heartbreaking.
But I believe the goal of editing is to make a story more like what it is trying to be. If that makes sense. So the heart of the novel has never changed. My editor and I worked hard to make it a better version of what it already was. But this took a LOT of work, over MANY months, and Anna lost twenty thousand words in the process!
Si e no. Ho trascorso anni rivisitando i romanzo, ed è stato esilarante e infuriante e straziante.
Ma credo che lo scopo dell'editare si di rendere la storia molto più simile a cosa è. Sempre che questo abbia senso. Il cuore della storia non è mai cambiato. Io e il mio editore abbiamo lavorato duro per rendere il romanzo una versione migliore di quello che già era. Ma questo è costato molto lavoro, di molti mesi, e Anna ha perso circa 20.00 parole nel processo!

• Who was your biggest supporter while you were working on the book? Chi è stato il tuo più grande sostenitore mentre lavoravi al libro?

Oh my stars. I’m lucky to have an entire arsenal of supporters. It feels cruel not to mention them all! But the biggest is my husband Jarrod. This book would not have been written without his encouragement, support, enthusiasm, and love. He also fed me, when I was too exhausted to do it myself. Which was pretty much every day. Food is good.
Oh stelle mie! Sono stata fortunata nel avere nel mio arsenale molti sostenitori. Mi sento cattiva nel non citarli tutti! Ma il più grande è mio marito Jarrod. Questo libro non sarebbe mai stato scritto senza il suo incoraggiamento, supporto, entusiasmo, e amore. Lui mi ha anche sfamato, quando ero troppo esausta nel farlo da sola. Il che è accaduto quasi ogni giorno. Il cibo è buono.

• What are some books that inspired you to write your own? Quali sono alcuni dei libri che ti hanno ispirato a scrivere il tuo?

This is a tough question, because I love just about everything. But three authors have most influenced my current career path: Meg Cabot, John Green, and Maureen Johnson. Meg taught me that funny books with cute boys could still contain powerful messages of feminism. John taught me that a hilarious, page-turning novel could carry incredible emotional depth and intelligence. And Maureen, well, I feel like she’s a lovely blend of all of that, something I strive to be. I will read anything these three authors write.

Questa è una domanda difficile, perché amo quasi tutto. Ma tre autori hanno influenzato maggiormente il mio percorso: Meg Cabot, John Green e Maureen Johnson. Meh mi ha insegnato che libri divertenti con ragazzi carini potevano anche contenere dei messaggi importanti di femminismo. John mi ha insegnato che un romanzo esilarante e da cui non riesci a staccarti può contenere un incredibile profondità emotiva e intelligenza. E Maureen credo sia un delizioso insieme di queste caratteristiche, qualcosa che aspiro a diventare. Leggerei tutto quello che scriverebbero questi autori.
 

• Can you tell us a little bit about your next book in the series, Lola and the Boy Next Door? Puoi dirci qualcosina sul tuo prossimo libro della serie, Lola and the Boy Next Door?

It's a companion novel to ANNA, which means that though it has some character overlap, the story is firmly Lola's and can be read on its own. It takes place in America.
È un romanzo companion di ANNA, il che significa la sovrapposizione di alcuni personaggi, la storia è fermamente quella di Lola e può essere letta singolarmente. È ambientata in America.
Intervista davvero interessante! Devo ammette che alcune nozioni riguardo il libro l'ho scoperte solo attraverso le domande e le relative risposte. Non mi resta che consigliarvi la lettura di Anna,  Il primo bacio a Parigi uno dei migliori contemporary romance YA di sempre.
