Uno scrittore non dovrebbe mai “abbassare” il suo modo di scrivere per adeguarsi all’età più bassa dei lettori, adolescenti invece che adulti. Quando ero ragazzo io leggevo i fantasy più complicati. Secondo me se abbassi il livello della scrittura per adeguarti a un pubblico giovane loro lo noteranno, e il tuo non sarà un buon libro. Per questo io ho sentito il bisogno di avere la stessa complessità nella costruzione del mondo e nella trama che creo in un libro per adulti.
Questo non significa che un libro per adulti e un libro per adolescenti siano uguali. Quello che cambia è il tipo di conflitto. Per me l’elemento caratterizzante di un romanzo per adolescenti è che il conflitto che lo anima dev’essere un conflitto da adolescenti. In The Rithmatist Joel sta cercando di capire cosa ne sarà della sua vita. Neve capire, negli anni di scuola, chi è lui, cosa sta cercando, cosa vuole fare e cosa potrebbe fare nel caso in cui non riuscisse a fare ciò che pensa di dover fare. Questo genere di conflitti risuonano con le esperienze dei lettori e vengono percepiti come reali.

Mi sono imbattuta in una sua breve intervista e questo massaggio mi è piaciuto. Sempre prendere sul serio il lettore, mai considerarlo troppo immaturo per poter seguire una trama complicata. Sanderson parla di adolescenti, che sono assolutamente in grado di leggere libri da adulti, ma a volte mi è capitato di leggere autori generalmente non di fantasy dedicarsi al nostro genere, e lo fanno con condiscendenza. Ci trattano cioè come se non fossimo un grado di capire le loro solite opere e quindi per potersi far leggere da noi abbassano il loro livello di scrittura, senza capire che forse se non li leggiamo è perché non siamo interessati a ciò che hanno scritto, non perché non siamo in grado di capirli. Già che ci sono ho deciso che è ora di fare un rapido riepilogo su quel che Brandon ha scritto e su quel che sta scrivendo.
