Andra Day, pseudonimo di Cassandra Monique Batie, è una cantante dalla voce densa e corposa. Classe 1984. Eppure ricorda le cantanti soul di un tempo – Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald e Dinah Washington –, non per niente è stata chiamata a interpretare Billie Holiday nel biopic a lei dedicato, in uscita nelle sale proprio questo mese, per cui ha già vinto il Golden Globe come migliore attrice protagonista per cui è stata candidata anche all'Oscar. Ha pubblicato il suo primo album, Cheers To The Fall, nel 2015.

Rise up è una canzone che parla di solidarietà, di empatia.

Come dice Andra Day all'inizio della versione acustica di Rise Up, la canzone è un inno alla necessità di aiutarsi l'un l'altro, perché è il solo modo per riuscire a risorgere anche quando sembra impossibile. Andra Day è stata chiamata a cantarla anche alla Casa Bianca, davanti all'allora presidente Barack Obama, alla cerimonia di chiusura dei giochi paraolimpici e durante la parata per il presidente Joe Biden e il vicepresidente Kamala Harris.
Rise Up è una canzone di resilienza, speranza, determinazione, porta con sé la certezza che uniti si può spostare anche le montagne, iniziando a piccoli passi un percorso di rinascita: «Se puoi alzarti, puoi fare il passo successivo, e se puoi fare il passo successivo, puoi fare quello dopo» (Andra Day). Nata dopo l’uccisione di George Floyd, Rise Up è oggi diventata l’inno di rinascita del movimento Black Lives Matter in difesa dei diritti degli afroamericani.
