Informazioni Questo catalogo elenca e descrive le illustrazioni esposte durante le due mostre dedicate a Tolkien al “Ashmolean Museum” di Oxford, dal 14 dicembre 1976 al 27 febbraio del 1977 e al “National Book League” di Londra dal 2 marzo al 7 aprile 1977. Sono riprodotte undici illustrazioni e dettagli di illustrazioni in bianco e nero, così come un drago e l'anello che sovrasta l’occhio di Sauron sul fronte e sul retro delle copertine a colori.
Lo stesso comprende anche trascrizioni di appunti presi da Tolkien sulle stesse illustrazioni.
Il numero di Numero di copie stampate è sconosciuto, ma 960 copie furono consegnate al Museo Ashmolean.

Note The Green Dragon, reproduced on the cover, is taken from The Book of Ishness, a Winsor Newton sketch book, which dates from Tolkien’s undergraduate days, (1914) but also includes drawings done later, such as this in September 1927. It is inscribed hringhoga heorte gefysed and inspired bu the quotation from Beowulf, line 2561, “Then was the heart of the coiled creature incited to seek strife”; evidence, as Christopher Tolkien has noted, of J.R.R. Tolkien’s interest in dragons which was to be used in Smaug ten years later (30, 31).
