[DECORAZIONE] Ocean wave, embellish with ruffles - abbellire con le ruches

As promised (even if a little bit late, sorry!), here you are my OceanWave, top embellished with ruffles!
Unfortunately I always forgot to take a picture of the starting tee....so I can´t make a ¨before and after¨ comparison! But remind that in every project I start from a very simple tee, plain colour, without any decoration, usually in cotton/jersey fabric.
In this case the top was also very very long, so the idea to shorten the tee and use the extra fabric to embellish it was almost immediate!


For this project:

• a long shirt/top, maybe a tunic
• scissor, chalk, pin
• sewing machine
• iron (this is optional, but it will help you very much)

Come promesso (anche se un po´ in ritardo, scusate!), ecco il mio OceanWave (onda oceanica), top abbellito con ruches, volant, fru fru, chiamateli come preferite!
Purtroppo dimentico sempre di fare una foto alla maglietta di partenza, per poter fare un confronto ¨prima e dopo¨...! Considerate comunque che parto sempre da canotte e magliette di cotone in tinta unita, semplici e senza nessuna decorazione!
In questo caso la canotta era anche molto lunga, e´ stata quindi immediata l´idea di accorciarla e decorarla con la sua stessa stoffa!
Per questo progetto:

• canotta/maglietta molto lunga, magari una tunichetta
• forbici, gessetto, spilli
• macchina da cucire
• ferro e asse da stiro (opzionale, ma molto utile!)

Iniziamo allora!
To make a straight cut pin first the edge of the shirt, front and back together.
Per poter fare un taglio dritto spillate il bordo inferiore della maglia, davanti e dietro insieme.

To help you in the next steps you can iron the shirt, to ¨fix¨ it a little.
Per aiutarvi nei prossimi step date una leggera stirata alla canotta, cosi´ che rimanga in posizione.

With a chalk trace the new lenght of the shirt (you have to consider also to ad 1 or 2 cm to make the new hem).
Segnate con un gesso la lunghezza finale della maglia a cui avrete aggiunto 1 o 2 cm per poter fare l´orlo

To make everything easier you can pin front and back together also a little below the trace, this will help you while you´ll cut.
Per maggiore tranquillita´ spillate insieme davanti e dietro anche sotto il margine che avete segnato, facilitera´ il taglio.

Now you can cut the extra fabric away and keep it for later.
Tagliate ora via il pezzo di stoffa in piu´ e tenetela per dopo.

Pin the new hem of the shirt and before sew it you can iron it a little, sewing will be easier!
Spillate ora il nuovo orlo della maglietta e passatelo sotto il ferro da stiro, ancora una volta questa operazione vi facilitera´ il prossimo step, la cucitura.
Now you can sew with your sewing machine the new edge using a bland zigzag or stretch stitches, remember to use the right needle for your fabric (I was working with jersey, so I used a ball point needle)
Cucite l´orlo della maglietta con un punto elastico o un zigzag a bassa tensione e lungo, possibilmente usando aghi compatibili al tessuto (nel mio caso ho usato aghi appositi per il jersey, a punta tonda)

Take the extra fabric you´ve cut, and cut it in 2 pieces just a little below the orginal edge, as you can see in the photo.
Prendete ora la parte tagliata via, e tagliatela ulteriormente poco sotto l´orlo originale della maglietta, come vedete in foto.
Unstitch the 2 parts of tissue on one side, in this way now you have 2 stripes of tissue you can use to make ruffles.
I used only the big one in my project, and I kept the little one for future projects....but you can do whatever you want!
Scucite i vostri lembi di tessuto su un lato. In questo modo avrete ottenuto 2 strisce di tessuto che potrete utilizzare per abbellire la vostra maglietta! Nel mio caso ho usato solo la striscia piu´ alta, e conservato la piu´ piccola per progetti futuri, ma voi potete scegliere quello che preferite!

Wear your tee and with a chalk, while you´re wearing it, trace the lines on which you´ll sew your ruffles.
Indossate la canotta e, proprio mentre la avete addosso, disegnate con un gessetto le linee su cui cucirete le ruches.

Take your facric stripe (the one you prefere) and, following the lines,start to make ruffles folding the fabric on itself and pin them.
Prendete le vostre strisce di tessuto, iniziate con quella che preferite.
Cominciate ad appuntare sul top la striscia di tessuto che costituira´ le ruches, piegate il tessuto su se stesso per creare l´effetto increspato.
Wear you tee and move/modify ruffles until you´re satisfied. Now, if you think that the ruffles are too long, you can cut away some extra fabric.
Indossate piu´ volte la maglietta e spostate/modificate le ruches finche´ non sarete soddisfatte dell´effetto.
A questo punto se pensate che ci sia del tessuto in piu´ potete tagliarlo via.

When everything is at its place, you can sew the ruffles! Doing that I used a bland straight stitch.
Quando e´ tutto a posto potete cucire la vostra decorazione! In questo caso ho usato un punto dritto abbastanza lento.

To obtain a good result pay attention to details: sew at the best you can the stripes, in particular where they start and where they end, to hide the seam.
Per un risultato ottimale fate attenzione ai dettagli: cucite al meglio la striscia al tessuto, soprattutto nei punti di inizio e fine ruches, in modo da nascondere la cucitura al meglio.


This project is cheap&quick, I bought the top during the summer sale for 3,99 euro!
