E’ nata nelle isole Fiji, ma è cresciuta in Nuova Zelanda, dove vive tuttora. Ha viaggiato molto, facendo i lavori più disparati: l’avvocato, la libraia, l’impiegata di banca, l’insegnante d’inglese e persino l’operaia in una fabbrica di caramelle. La sua vera passione, però, è sempre stata la narrativa, cui ora si dedica a tempo pieno. Il profumo del sangue è il primo romanzo della serie con protagonista Elena Deveraux, una serie che ha scalato le classifiche americane ed è stata tradotta con grande successo in tutto il mondo.

D: Noi fan italiani l’abbiamo conosciuta come scrittrice per la serie Guild Hunter, mentre da diversi anni negli Usa e in alcune parti d’Europa i suoi fan hanno già potuto apprezzare l’altra sua grande serie Psy/Changeling. Come mai secondo lei l’editoria ha scommesso maggiormente su vampiri e arcangeli tanto da pubblicare per prima una serie che è stata scritta dopo? Perchè questo tipo di creature sovvranaturali sono diventate così di moda? /The Italian fans have come to know you as a writer for the Guild Hunter series, whereas your Usa fans and some European supporters had enjoyed your other important Psy/Changeling series already a few years ago. In your opinion, why did the publishing industry stake so much on vampires and archangels that it published first a series which was written afterwards? Why have this kind of supernatural creatures become so popular?

R: Non penso ci sia una sola risposta al perché i vampiri e gli angeli siano diventati così popolari in letteratura. Un motivo potrebbe essere che siamo attratti da loro perché rappresentano qualche cosa di ‘altro’ che ci obbliga a guardare il mondo in un modo totalmente nuovo. E l’eccitazione e il fascino con cui ci rivolgiamo a vampiri e angeli (o, più in generale, a qualsiasi potente creatura immortale) è spesso mescolato a un pizzico di paura: e chi può resistere a un po’ di pericolo? /I don’t think there’s any single answer as to why vampires and angels have become so popular in fiction. It could well be that we’re intrigued by them because they are so “other” that they force us to look at the world in a whole new way. And, the excitement and fascination with which we see vampires and angels (or any powerful immortal in general), is often mixed with a little fear – and who can resist a dance with danger?

D: Tramite le sue descrizioni gli arcangeli ci appaiono come creature calcolatrici, fredde, crudeli e in un certo senso, al di sopra della morale, tutto l’opposto insomma dei classici stereotipi a cui siamo abituati. Come mai ha deciso di dare questa “versione” del mondo angelico, nonchè legarlo a quello vampiresco?/ Through your descriptions the archangels look like cold, calculating, cruel and, in a sense, immoral creatures: exactly the opposite of the stereotypes we know. Why did you choose to represent in this way the angel world and so why did you choose to link it to the vampire world?

R: È così che mi è venuta la storia. L’ho scritta senza darmi alcun vincolo né darne ai miei personaggi e penso che sia questa la ragione che rende la serie così forte, quello che le dà un impatto emotivo. /That’s how the story came to me. I wrote it without putting any brakes on myself or the characters, and I think that’s what makes the series strong, what gives it its emotional impact.

D: Nella serie Psy/Changeling si ritrovano vari argomenti cari ai libri di fantascienza: le mutazioni genetiche, i poteri della mente, il progresso tecnologico ed i suoi rischi quando questo perde di vista l’essere umano. E’ mai stata appassionata di questo genere di letteratura e quali sono gli autori che l’hanno più colpita? /In the Psy/Changeling series we can find several themes appreciated by the science fiction fans: genetic mutations, mind powers, technological advance and its risks when it goes beyond the human nature. Have you ever been fond of this genre and who are the authors who struck you most?

R: Sono cresciuta leggendo fantascienza e fantasy e mi sono sempre piaciuti svariati autori, tra cui Anne McCaffrey e Andre Norton. Ultimamente, ho apprezzato la serie Retrieval Artist di Kristine Kathryn Rush e i libri della serie di Liaden di Sharon Lee e Steve Miller. /I grew up reading science fiction and fantasy and have enjoyed a wide range of authors, including Anne McCaffrey and Andre Norton. More recently, I’ve loved Kristine Kathryn Rusch’s Retrieval Artist books, and the Liaden books by Sharon Lee and Steve Miller.

D: Parlando di collaborazioni le chiedo : come ha vissuto il progetto “The Royal House of Shadows” che ha realizzato assieme alle sue amiche nonchè autrici affermate Andersen, Monroe e Showalter? E’ un esperienza da rifare? /Let’s talk about collaboration work: how was your experience with “The Royal House of Shadows” project with your friends and famous writers Andersen, Monroe and Showalter? Would you do that once again?

R: È stato un progetto divertente e gli autori con cui ho collaborato sono stati meravigliosi. Sono disponibile a fare un altro progetto del genere, ma al momento mi sto concentrando sulle mie due serie. /It was a fun project and the other authors were wonderful to work with. I’m open to doing another such project in the future, but at present, I’m focused on my two series.

D: Sappiamo che è anche scrittrice di libri romance. Pensa di tornare a scrivere questo genere di romanzi o ormai è proiettata definitivamente verso l’Urban Fantasy e la Fantascienza? /We know you wrote romance books as well. Do you think you will go back to this genre or you will stick to Urban Fantasy and Science Fiction forever?

R: Mi considero ancora una scrittrice di romance nel profondo, perché i personaggi e le loro relazioni sono parte integrale nei miei libri: non solo le relazioni amorose, ma anche le amicizie, i rapporti tra genitori/figli e parenti, i legami del branco…questi legami sono le fondamenta delle mie storie e sono importanti tanto quanto gli elementi fantascientifici e fantasy. /I still consider myself a romance writer at heart, because the characters and their relationships are integral to my books – not just the romances, but the friendships, the parent/child and sibling relationships, the bonds of pack… These ties form the foundations of my stories and are just as important as the sf/fantasy elements.

D: In questo periodo le trasposizioni cinematografiche e televisive di best seller impazzano ovunque. Le piacerebbe se gliele proponessero per i suoi romanzi? /Nowadays film and television adaptations of best sellers series are everywhere. Would you appreciate if you would be offered one for your novels?

R: Sarebbe molto divertente vedere i miei libri sullo schermo, ma il fatto che io accetti o meno un’offerta del genere dipende dalla visione che il regista ha dei libri e dal fatto che quella visione si accordi alla mia. /t’d be great fun to see my books on the screen, but whether I would accept such an offer would depend on the vision the filmaker had for the books, and whether that vision matched my own.

D: Ultima domanda : vorrebbe dire qualcosa ia suoi fan italiani e ai lettori di Sognando Leggendo? /Last question: would you like to say something to your Italian fans and Sognando Leggendo readers?
