Per l’ottava volta quest’anno c’è stata una doppietta Mercedes nelle qualifiche, con Rosberg davanti a Hamilton. Entrambi i piloti hanno utilizzato una buona strategia gomme: sono stati, infatti, i soli a completare un solo run nella Q2 con gomme medie, scelte insieme alle gomme hard per il weekend di Suzuka.

Come risultato, Rosberg ed Hamilton sono i soli due piloti della top 10 ad avere un nuovo set di medie per la gara. Anche oggi le temperature si sono mantenute miti: 27 gradi quelle ambientali e 38 quelle di pista all’inizio della sessione. Le due Mercedes, le due Williams, le due McLarens, le due Red Bull e la Ferrari di Fernando Alonso hanno usato la gomma hard per finire la Q1.

Dopo, tutti i piloti hanno utilizzato solo la gomma media, di mezzo secondo più veloce della hard: il gap prestazionale tra le due mescole si è ridotto con l’evolversi della pista.

La gomma media sarà probabilmente la preferita per la gara, per questo i piloti hanno cercato di conservare quanti più nuovi set possibile, anche alla luce del notevole degrado termico. Nella Q2, solo i piloti Mercedes sono riusciti a conservare un set di gomme medie rispetto agli altri, completando un solo run. Nella Q3 hanno poi effettuato due soli run.

Rosberg ha conquistato la pole al secondo tentativo e, sebbene la pista sia diventata progressivamente più veloce, nessuno è stato capace di batterlo. Valtteri Bottas, Williams, si è qualificato terzo, a meno di un secondo dalla pole. Anche nelle prove libere del mattino, Rosberg è stato il più veloce, usando gomme medie.

Il Direttore Motorsport Pirelli, Paul Hembery, ha commentato: “Anche oggi non ci sono state grosse sorprese, almeno non in pista. Il gap tra le due mescole si è ridotto leggermente, come avevamo anticipato, ma la media resta ancora la gomma preferita per la gara. Questo, ovviamente, in caso di gara asciutta. Il meteo, infatti, resta ancora incerto. Vediamo cosa succede domani”.

La previsione Pirelli:

Una strategia a due soste sembra essere la migliore per i 53 giri della gara (non a caso, fu la strategia vincente dello scorso anno).

La migliore soluzione sarebbe partire con le gomme medie, montare un nuovo set di medie al 22° giro e, alla fine, passare alle hard al 42° giro. Qualche Team potrebbe provare una strategia a tre soste; in questo caso, l’opzione migliore sarebbe iniziare sulle gomme medie, montare un nuovo set di medie al 18°giro, ancora medie al 33° giro e, infine, hard a partire dal 47° giro. Questa strategia in teoria è più lenta di 7 secondi rispetto a quella a due pit stop.

In caso di pioggia, queste previsioni ovviamente non valgono: in quel caso, sarà necessario reagire velocemente ai cambiamenti. Temperature più fredde incideranno sul degrado e, quindi, sulla strategia gomme.
